The Michael Shermer Show # 408
To build electric vehicles, solar panels, cell phones, and millions of other devices means the world must dig more mines to extract lithium, copper, and other vital building blocks. But mines are deeply unpopular, even as they have a role to play in fighting climate change and powering crucial technologies.
Shermer and Scheyder discuss:
• How much rare earth metals will we need by 2050, 2100, and beyond?
• How do lithium-ion batteries work compared to lead-acid? What are the alternatives?
• Will EVs completely replace all other cars?
• Can renewables completely replace fossil fuels without nuclear?
• How mining works in the U.S., China, Chile, Russia, elsewhere
Ernest Scheyder is a senior correspondent for Reuters, covering the green energy transition and the minerals that undergird it. He previously covered the US shale oil revolution, politics, and the environment at the Associated Press.

I'm glad there are people like Ernest who are prepared to dedicate their lives to exploring and communicating the BIG picture. So many only see their own tiny part of the world. But we are all connected, in many ways.

Ausrtralia has some of the highest rare-element resources in the world and investment, exploration and infrastructure are rapidly increasing. The Australian rare mineral industry will nullify any stranglehold attempt! America has also heavily invested in Australian rare minerals and lucky for you guys we are one of your closest defence partners.

There is a large environmental consulting industry that guides developers through the regulatory process. They identify all the permitting steps required and prepare environmental studies to determine potential impacts of the projects. The studies may identify impacts to air quality, water quality, endangered species, etc. from the project. Once an impact is identified, the developer with the help of the consultants, must identify mitigation measures that reduce the impact. Problems arise when mitigation is not available or is too expensive to implement. Disagreement among experts can result in legal challenges to the project that often cause multi-year delays that can kill projects. California has its own environmental regulation known as the California Environmental Quality Act that is commonly used by project opponents to stop or slow projects. CEQA lawsuits are often funded by competitors and unions seeking union labor provisions for the project. The lawsuits are often based on claimed inadequacy of the studies used to support the environmental conclusions of the Environmental Impact Reports. This has led to more and more detailed environmental studies and reports to head of lawsuits.

Deep talk here. Something to ponder for sure. No idea what I personally can do about it.

This important video has under 2000 views, while a music video by Cardy B or Dua Lipa , Megan Thee Stallion and the likes have hundreds of millions of views. I reckon it tells a lot about the state of mind in our society

To go to 100% EV, all grids need massive upgrades costing billions. In addition, the range and safety of EVs aren't practical in cold climates. Finally, replacement batteries are extremely costly.

Your comment very accurate in my view… Even if there were enough materials to meet the policy goals, which very credible scientists have showed there are not

Right. All the highest-grade copper ore, among many, lies in those Afghanistan ranges of the country and region we just trashed for two decades, but this guys claims China has a lock on minerals. Yawn.

Like all "resources are limited" claims, this likely won't hold true as we seem to find all we need once we know we need it. And maybe the future will mine our landfills, just as so many now can produce energy.
@christopherhamilton3621

They’re not ‘claims’ without evidence. You think we don’t have enough geological knowledge of what’s in the ground to have a reasonable idea? The ignorance around this stuff is astonishing.

how about designing things to be reparable? if i can use something for 5 more years it wont go to the landfill instead things are designed to fail
