China has given pandas to foreign powers long before the 20th century, but the most current iteration of panda diplomacy began in the 1950s with its gifting of Ping Ping and An An to the Soviet Union. Today, pandas are no longer gifted, but rather loaned to other countries, particularly those with which China wants to develop and strengthen relations. Not only are pandas an iconic symbol of China and its culture, they also act as diplomats in China’s global political strategy.

Samin Yead. That's a really interesting point. However, the reason why this might not work is the local animal defenders would almost certainly protest against such a strategy. They'd say China has the expertise to take better care of the pandas in the long run and it's in the best interest of the pandas to return them to their hometown.

Wood Choppa It's not like the pandas are treated bad anyways. It's the government's intention to use them as tools, but for zoos and ordinary citizens, we just love to see pandas around the world! Institutions in different countries also get to learn about pandas, and this is in no ways bad. If there was no obvious negative in using pandas as diplomatic tools, other than the governments' uncomfortable intention, why not? I mean, manipulating resources and trades could obviously affect economy in a good or bad way. Pandas are much more harmless lol.

Hmm, you didn't mention the few pandas that are exceptions. If I recall correctly, the pandas gifted to Taiwan are not considered loans as Taiwan is not considered a country by the PRC.

It would be awesome if I could get an answer as to why pandas give leverage to China in diplomacy. Is the panda holding zoo's prestige so important on a national level that it affects bilateral relationships, does it generate so much revenue it effects the local economy? I don't get it.

Ironically, if it weren't for humans, Giant Pandas would probably go extinct. They can only eat bamboo; which is high in toxins, and low in nutrition. So much so, that pandas literally have to spend almost every waking hour, eating. They don't breed very well, even in the wild, have a very low birth rate, and can't move very quickly. Unlike their much smaller, omnivorous, tree-dewing cousins, the Red Pandas (which look a lot like foxes).

You have a factual error in the video. While there is a continuous ongoing independence movement in Tibet, the Dalai Lama has repeatedly said he was giving up the prospects of independence for autonomy and self government since 1988. I would not exactly call that "fierce advocate for the independence of Tibet." I understand that it is more painful for Western cultures to confirm facts about their eastern compatriots, but errors like this for a news organization is pretty unforgivable. It also takes away credibility from the high quality videos that Vox consistently produce.

He hasn't returned because the government is oppressive and paranoid about him, fair and simple. the truth is the fact that the Chinese government propaganda paints him as a warmonger and the fact that he is vehemently against the Chinese government is not at all related to how the video falsely refers to the Dalai Lama as a "fierce advocate for independence in Tibet."

Alec Cheung Not knowing all the details about the "feud" between the Dalai Lama and China, I am not sure at all about what I am going to say. But, I have the feeling that if China could figure out a way to "take back" some of the things the Chinese government has said about the Dalai Lama, they would welcome him back with open arms. It would be a "benevolent gesture" towards Tibet, it might well quell some of the "unrest" in Tibet, and would remove a source of external irritation that bothers China (along with silencing some of the external objections). But this is just a feeling I have. ;^)

In the Adelaide zoo (Australia) its stipulated that the pandas cubs are allowed to stay here. However, both pandas have not given birth in 10 years of being here, prompting a lot of Australians to believe that China gave us sterili pandas
