China's Smoking Culture Explained

Had a new (Chinese) neighbor move in next door. Never spoke to him b4. Come back from walking my son to school early in the morning 1 day, & he heads me off at the sidewalk, puts a cigarette in my mouth, & lights it for me. I just thought that was the most badass thing ever! No words. This video makes it more clear why he did that

My university is filled with rich Chinese people who all smoke highly premium Chinese cigarettes. They always keenly offer me cigarettes and some of them taste so nice and smooth. Also, they have gold ribboned filter tips and premium looking packs. They tell me they pay around $30 a pack for them. Most of them look down on Marlboro and Camel.

Sometimes I think RU-vid knows I can’t sleep so it’s like “yo we know your trying to sleep and struggling to find something good to watch so do you wana watch this Random but interesting video” then videos like this pop up on my recommended lol

I got offered a cigarette by a Chinese hipster at my local restaurant. I accepted it and we talked about his Mercedes. I guess I’m a man among men. I had no idea this was such a big deal in China.

My second semester at my university, I met a student from China who today I consider family. He taught me about cigarette etiquette and culture (which was mostly covered by the video). For anybody interested in learning a bit more, it's considered bad etiquette to reject a cigarette when offered. Also, from personal experience, the best way to meet somebody is just to offer a cigarette. Many of the students coming from China at my university will openly carry their cigarette box with them, so it's easy to see who smokes. Offer them one, and you'll earn bonus laowai (foreigner) points if you happen to get your hands on Chinese cigarettes in the U.S. You can usually find them in Asian markets or Asiatic-ethnic neighborhoods One more thing, every province/large city has it's "favorite" cigarette. You usually can tell where somebody is from by what they smoke, though Chunghwa being the universal favorite of China. Also, as the video mentioned, what you smoke is a status symbol like what you drive is here in the States. So my recommendation is if you're with someone important, whether it be someone your romantically interested in or a potential employer, have a respectable brand on you (again, can't go wrong with Chunghwa).

One of my uncles said that smoking cigarettes eliminates bad germs. One of the most bizarre things I ever heard.

You think red packages cigarettes get sold better over there than let’s say kools or so on? I know how important red it is in the Chinese culture

I used to work at a Chinese restaurant, the chefs out back would always take cigarette breaks. Whenever I walked past they would always offer me a cig. Never did but they ALWAYS offered.

I struggled since 18 with smoking. Now at 25, I finally stopped cold turkey. 6 months later, here I am watching a video on Smoking culture in China and I don't even smoke anymore.

I always find your videos very informative into another culture that I find very interesting. Of course I prefer the precious metals content, but these types of videos are cool as well. I wish I was able to pick up a pack of these here in the states just to try them out. $15 bucks a pack is almost double what we pay here. Then again if you live in a major city like New York I think they are around the 12-14 dollar price range these days.

TBH Chinese cigarettes tastes better and smoother.

Chinese government doesn't enforce stricter tobacco restrictions law because they don't want to lose the huge tax revenue.

It’s interesting to witness a culture that so blatantly loves smoking, even more than America did from the beginning of time till the 80’s. We have Chinese neighbors and they had a party. About 150 people came, most of them American citizens of 10-15 years and even some people from Vietnam, and I counted maybe 15 men who I didn’t see with a cigarette in their mouth. It was kinda cool to see and I pointed out to my friends how smoking still makes you look like a badass regardless of the negative health implications lol. I mean who are Americans to talk with our severe obesity.

My friend gave me a Chunghwa cigarette I'm not much of a smoker I love smoking weed but not tobacco. I opened it up n rolled a spliff with some nice kush n damn that was the best joint I've ever smoked. I liked it more than smoking just weed it was a perfect combination of flavor.

Because foreign smoke brands in China are not imports. They are made in China and they are bad. The Chinese cigarettes on the otherhand are expensive and they taste very good.

I'm not sure what brand it was but someone gave me a Chinese cigarette once that had a really rigid filter, with a hole down the center of it. Tasted pretty good as far as nonmenthals go and it smoked a hell of a lot smoother than most that I've tried.

The way he was treating the shopkeepers pissed me off they're just trying to make a living give them a break.

I think I might know why Western cigarettes are so cheap in China, though if my suspicion is correct I don't know why it wouldn't apply similarly to Chinese cigarettes. Basically in the West (especially more liberal American states) well over half the price of a pack of cigarettes is tax. Therefore if there's no tax on cigarettes, the price can be lowered substantially. Like I said though, if that's the reason I don't know why it wouldn't apply to Chinese cigarettes.

I visited China in 2016 and I was presented with the 99 brand almost everywhere I went. I’m not a cigarettes smoker, I’m a cigar smoker and I don’t know how to read Chinese. I don’t know if that brand is any good but I did bring a box back to the states with me and gave some to some friends. They seemed to like them.

Widely accepted as best cigarettes in China are, Nanjing 9-5 ZhiZun and Huang He Lou 1916 These used to price at 1000-2000 USD a carton but because of government limits nowadays, the most expensive a pack a cigarettes can be is 99 RMB.

A Chinese friend of mine gave me his favourite brand of Chinese cigarettes once. Best cigarette I have ever had. I smoke real US Marlboro Reds which are really hard to come by and illegal to sell in Canada. I gave him one and he was astonished that I had them. Kinda cool to see that it was because of his culture and cool to see why he might have given me the cigarette.

The most expensive is Nanjing 95. It's 100 rmb for the hard packaging, and soft packing isn't sold at the counter since the government introduced the selling cap at 100 rmb over the counter. If you buy a soft pack Nanjing 95 behind the counter it may cost you well over 200 rmb per pack.
