Chinese prefer to operate many smaller subs recently because their scientist has found a new way to detect submarine in any waters just by observing the movement of water at the top. They can even check back for days and map the precise submarine movement using satellites. They have proven and submitted a paper on that. It will be just a matter of time before US is able to do it consistently too. Hence, to counter this possible detection in the future, China invested in smaller submarine technology. They will still want to design big submarines so I suspect they are finding ways to reduce swells gliding under water.

Det Norske Veritas recently approved the design of a 24k container vessel powered by such a reactor to sail between Atlantic and Pacific through the Arctic Ocean all through the year. These reactors work at much higher temperature, are therefore more efficient and have to get rid of much less waste heat. The reactor for this boat will be much smaller and might be based on a test reactor from the development of the reactor for the merchant ship.

The Type 041 could still have some limited standoff strike capability if it was armed with torpedo tube launched anti-ship missiles, but w/o VLS, it certainly wouldn't be able to provide the volume of fire that a full SSN with VLS would. I wonder whether an unmanned version of this sub is possible. If so, it could eliminate the endurance bottleneck of food/water supplies, enabling it to stay out at sea practically indefinitely. The space that's freed up from the manned crew could be used for additional sensors, weapons, &/or batteries.

I have similar thoughts. It's difficult to imagine how a small vehicle with battery-driven propulsion could discreetly dissipate power in order to stop, if the energy source was continuous and frequent power cycling was impossible. It led me to the hypothesis that such a submersible will not make frequent port calls for resupply and servicing, and may be out at sea for several years at a time. Obstacles to this include geographic navigation, intelligent management of onboard systems, frequency and timing of communications, and predictive maintenance.

With current advances in AI technologies, it's no longer essential to produce large manned nuclear subs. I'd suggested 10+ years ago that it would be far more effective & economical to use small unmanned nuclear attack submarines each carrying just a few specialized torpedoes, accompanied by dedicated command-control-computing-surveillance boats (also nuclear powered) working in small tactical groups in conjunction with larger manned attack subs & carrier battle groups. It's far easier, cheaper & faster to design, produce, repair, & replace small, quiet unmanned nuclear attack subs. With its current ship building capabilities, China can easily produce 20-30 such unmanned mini nuclear attack subs & auxiliary boats every year.

Very Brief And Summarize Ideas: I think they could fire the YJ18 anti ship cruise missiles, maybe developing a smaller size version for this class of submarines, frigates and missiles boats and even air and ground launched versions... on the other hand I think one of the the main threats for PLA naval forces operating between the Chinese mainland (with the exception of the shallow waters of taiwan straight) and the first chain of islands is the attack submarines either nuclear powered attacks submarines of what is temporarily called the united states of america or the conventionally powered submarines of its allies in the Indo-Pacific region all have very robust and advanced submarines industry which will be played as force multipliers assets for navy of what is temporarily called the united states, forcing the our Chinese friends naval forces to direct a considerable resources (combat assets and combat support assets) to chasing and containing those mostly electro- AIP submarines, which those types of submarines powered by new type of hybrid propulsion systems could be more useful at strategical and operational and tactical levels, with its small size easy to mass produced, and will not required a large number of crew thus it can be deployed in larger number to execute various types of offensive and defensive missions... I think this submarine can benefit from several factors to operate over long distances outside its expected areas of activity, Some of these factors are: 1- Its small size for reducing the overall footprints and facilities the maneuverability... 2- reducing the acoustic signature as a result of adopting a very quiet propulsion system... 3- the independent propulsion system that gives it the ability to remain underwater continuously... regarding the two expected theaters of operations, the Atlantic Ocean, which is the largest ocean in the world, and the Indian Ocean, these submarines can employ elements of their operational advantages in terms of its small size and quieter propulsion system to work thousands of km away from their bases ( not only limiting or restricting their operational utilization by the coastal zone and green waters although securing those are the priority at least in the early stages of any expected war with what is temporarily called the united states of america and it's allies, considering the ww2 submarines with similar or even much less displacements operated few thousand kms from its bases), infiltrating the hydrophone systems networks installed across all oceans beds and seabeds, those submarines can employ the complex topography of the seabed to carry out a sets of different operations within the strategy of hybrid & asymmetrical warfare which includes but not limited to setting up ambushes for enemy naval assets either submarines, surface combat and logistics vessels, planting mines and underwater explosive devices, launching naval drones, and infiltrating opponents seaports, launching cruise missiles (especially YJ18) against enemy ground target's for example assets deployed across the shores seaports and naval shipyards, naval bases, oil terminals, and oil storage sites....etc, theoretically a swarms from those submarines could sneak to 500 km from its intended target's and launch a salvos of those hypersonic missiles, although its slower process compared with cruise missiles fired from vertical launched systems, but worth noting here two things: 1- each submarine is equipped with four or six launching tubes and it could launch torpedoes from both sides... 2- I think those tube launched cruise missiles could enhance the stealthiness of the launching submarine because the missile should be fired horizontally allowing the missile to travel vertically underwater for distance before reaching the surface and flying in the sky, I think those distance could help concealing the launching submarine, compared with vertically launched cruise missiles...

You can easily say what that might be like, (pressurized, using turbines. continuous flow, so heat-exchangers instead of regenerators... filled with Helium maybe) but I don't know of any examples, and nothing on the scale of megawatts. In CHINA there might be a College or a design bureau or both devoted entirely to this, they have a lot of Engineers!

Sterling engines are much less efficient than steam engines, i.e. less power from nuclear fission is converted to mechanical power to drive the propeller. I suspect this is the main reason sterling engines are not widely used in SSNs. In the case of 041, since it is driven by the battery and the sterling engines are only used for charging, the lack of efficiency doesn't impact speed. A very smart design.

SSK(N)s were first proposed during the Cold War as ~3000t, primarily diesel-electric boats with small 1.3MW nuclear powerplant recharging the batteries, allowing the option of avoiding surfacing at the cost of limiting themselves to crawling speed. However, immature technology and high regulatory/compliance costs meant they were still very expensive; and totally unsuitable for the USN's objective of long range expeditionary warfare. A more appropriate moniker for Type 041 style submarines would be SSE(n), where E is for electric, or SSN(b), for battery. The prime mover on these boatsis battery-electric, and it's peak battery performance exceeds the nuclear output to offer a sprint option. As an incidental bonus, your chinese-speaking audience can exclaim NB for these submarines. I wouldn't straight up give the sensor edge to the conventional SSN; the nuclear-electric boat may have less hull for it's sonar suite, but the lower self-noise also offers advantages for passive detection, unless the SSN is spooling out it's towed array, at which point their speed advantage disappears. Similarly, the food-endurance really depends on the crew size. If the PLAN has taken full advantage of low-maintenance SMR (small modular reactor) technology, it's conceivable the crew to hull ratio could approach or even exceed the Soryu class, at which point you could conceivably out-endurance conventional SSNs.

21:45 I wonder, does the small size make it easier to give a sub a greater depth capability? I.e. can the 045 type sub work at a greater depth than larger subs? As a non-expert in this field it seems to me that it should.

Those AI generated photos of the 041 dont make sense. Even though they're fictional images the fact they show tons of grooves, dips, and other non-smooth surfaces makes no sense as all of that will create drag underwater, especially on the bow, and drag means sound which makes no sense for a sub design.

Russians - once - considered and I think even tried similar setup for Kilo class (proj. 877 ) submarine. Also: still this could power water desalination using waste heat and maybe oxygen generation, yielding greater endurance (at expense of mobility). Even argumenting tanks is huge thing. And if reactor is cooled by natural circulation.... remember SNAP-10 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNAP-10A - look at size, offering 30 kW of thermal power ( so 10 kWe is comfortably reached ) and in submarine and in that power level, whole hull can act as radiator without dedicated cooling assembly (of course, heat exchnager to keep radioactive coolant contained is needed ). And if China would use more exotic cooling (bismut? lead?), they probably could go into 100kWt in similarily sized package.

Eh.. The nuclear power plant does not shutdown. So it will continue to generate electricity needed for propulsion. As such, for normal cruising the sterling engine will power the engines directly and at the same time charge the batteries. The only time the quiet sterling engines are turned off should be during total silence period. There is no reason to turn off the nuclear power plant and run solely on battery at all time.

In a certain moment during the video is said that this kind of SSKN can't be used primaryly against an US navy's task force. How many time will be necessary to PLAN develop a hypersonic cruise missile with a range of, for example, 200km, that can be launched from a torpedo tube of 533mm? If these new subs will be as stealth as said, they could approximate to the task force, launch a salvo of four missiles and run away. A wolf pack of them will be a tremendous peril...

I am curious as to its top sustainable speed. I suspect it is limited by the Stirling engine, which is not know to be very powerful. Extremely efficient and quiet, but bulky and not powerful. Also, what is the weapons loadout. If it has limited food stores and weapons loads, I am not sure it can patrol the Malacca Straits or the 2nd Island Chain. I can raid out that far, but I am not sure it can patrol that far out. Performance-wise, it is definitely a step above a diesel-electric submarine. Whether it is cost effective is another matter. I wonder if this is just a technical test bed and the actual design will be larger.
@EurasiaNaval
@EurasiaNaval Месяц назад
The tactical speed should be limited more by the electric motor, as the Stirling is intended to recharge batteries (unlike in a typical AIP setup). Transit speed should be faster than diesel-electric boats though, given the ability to keep recharging submerged. Weapons loadout, as I said, is probably limited to torpedo tubes and associated cruise missiles (but we don't know). Given a relatively small weapons loadout, presumably it can carry enough food to patrol up to 2IC, if not as long as SSNs.
@ycplum7062
@ycplum7062 Месяц назад
@@EurasiaNaval Yes, sprint speed can be high. I was thinking of sustained speed underwater. At that point, it is dependent on how fast the stirling engine and convert the heat generated by the nuclear plant to electricity. That would be proportional to the size of teh stirling engine, which has a low energy conversion density. And yes, I am confident this system is better than diesel-electric in pretty much all areas of performance. Performance-wise, it is somewhere between a diesel-electric and a traditional nuclear sub. I think this system would work better for a ballistic missile sub.

1000 submarine.... amazing actually, from my view, sskn will replace the most of conventional submarine actually, but will not be something like wolf pack of WWII, i will estimate the number will be at most 80 the concept of sskn is a development of conventional submarine, not a replacement of nuclear submarine. nuclear submarine can run at top speed for days, and play a key role in attack mission, but sskn mostly will not reach 15 knots with out diesel engine, and mostly stay in key area and play role of defense the reason why American Navy do not develop any kind of ssk is that American navy do not expect meeting a long march fleet for attacking over ocean, there is no actually defense mission of American navy so they don't need it, but Soviet Navy is actually facing nato navy at coastline, defensive mission make Soviet Navy always owes a large ssk fleet since 1930s for defense mission in eastern asia, and within second Island chains, Chinese will actually need to deploy ssk in several well known area, the guam, japan Philippines coastal area, Indonesia coastal area, and at most Australia coastal area, there is actually no more room for sskn, and you will not expect sskn cross the ocean, that thing is too slow which means lower chance to escape from one to friendly area, only ssn can do these task however, mostly the submarines are playing the role of defensive mission, many nations in the world actually have ssk, but hardly do nations need ssn, as they are not going to start a nuclear war and try to destroy enermy fleet at enermy port, the concept of sskn is a big leap forward of the idea of ssk, sskn can stay as long as possible undercover, which means sskn can do much more than ever and the limitations on ssn will also on sskn, so you will not expect German or Japanese navy or even southern nations actually got their sskn, so the only will get the profit of sskn will be China, Russia, and probably northern Korea, and these are only country in the world actually say no to America and have their ability to say no to America, this is the bad news for western Navy
