Is this big operation aimed at catching criminals? Each of these electric bikes is being ridden like an off-road vehicle. Turns out, these videos were recently taken by people during the CCP's crackdown on electric bikes.
According to a report by China's Xinhua News Agency, on the evening of May 23, a nationwide operation was launched to address safety hazards related to electric bicycles. A total of 74,000 night patrol teams were deployed across the country to strictly inspect violations such as illegal parking and charging, and unauthorized modifications of electric bicycles. During these operations, they advised the on-the-spot removal of 298,000 illegally parked and charging electric bicycles.
Fire departments, police, market supervision, housing construction departments, and grassroots law enforcement teams, along with online forces, formed joint night patrol teams. A total of 256,000 inspectors were dispatched to inspect 63,000 residential communities, 175,000 self-built houses, and 233,000 nighttime business venues. The focus was on illegal parking and charging of electric bicycles in high-rise residential buildings, public lobbies, evacuation passages, stairwells, and emergency exits.

A Chinese friend explained that police seizure of these essential ebikes was a regular game between the Chinese cops and the people in Communist China. The Chinese cops wouldn't arrest the manufacturers of these bikes in China, nor the owners of retail outlets selling them to the Chinese public, just about their use on the streets. Even then, nothing would normally happen. If my friend got caught, which he said only very rarely happened, he'd just turn over the bike and then "repurchase it" from the same cops who took it. He kept a bank account solely for this purpose.

Am fire engineer, short and sweet. Modern fire suppression systems in residential zones are not designed to combat fires or even protect structures. Their only job is to give you 30 minutes to get out or to a place of refuge. They're classed as light hazard (paper, wood and upholstery), not for conditions that exceed the temperatures found in a crucible. (This is as far as the NFPA 13 fire code in the U.S. is concerned, unfamiliar with EU/Asia codes) Any sprinklers, if there even are any installed or operable, in these areas will fail completely. Even if they could discharge enough water to smother the fire, the sprinkler heads designed for use in these light hazard zones won't even spray water in a manner sufficient combat such an extremely centralized heat source. Best guess is, one guy did his job and saw the danger while officials saw an opportunity to capitalize on a market void. I feel for the transpo needs/budgets of the people, but these materials are truly dangerous. This is one of those situations where governments really need to bank up good will for...too bad they burned that check decades ago.

First they go for e-bike, then they be chasing after normal bicycle.. What next? claim walking with your own leg as hazardous and told people to ride truck that come pick them up at home..?

They already went for the normal bikes, in most large cities it is illegal to cicle on many streets. They needed to sell scooters, made at the party members' factories.

The people had a little too much freedom and they needed to curb it, let the plebs move around in their transport system, be it more expensive or less convenient, if safety was the concern they would have rolled out public education, quality controls etc to reduce risk of fires (I do agree that the bikes are a fire hazard and should never be charged indoors or packed outdoor spaces)

Ah, yes! The favorite phrase of Chinese "What's going on?" - feigning ignorance, while in reality the know full well exactly what's going on. Most ordinary Chinese are not stupid.

Xi had warned the people to prepare for hardships and taking away the E-bikes is just another hardship that people must endure. This is just another wonderful benefit of an authoritarian government that gives people the shaft and they can do nothing about it but just accept it as big brother torments the masses.
