The most advanced chips in the world today are made by TSMC. But have you considered who is number 2? There is currently a 3 way tie between Samsung, Intel, and SMIC. Samsung does not in fact have a huge lead over SMIC. No other country can stop sending high end chips to China. They are already #2.

EVEN IF China could over come the process to operate the equipment and undo the remote kill switch, China would not last long due to two major factors. First item is repair and maintenance. There is only one company in the world to supply the matter, parts, and knowledge to take care of such issues. Second item, I am not sure of everything, is the general supplies to make the wafers. The materials have to be of very high standards and only a very small handful of companies produce those materials. And I do not see those companies selling to China. If China sets up shell companies to buy the materials, that is not going to work as the supplier companies know who should be able to order things.
