A few products from this review were sent to me by Banggood for testing. This does not mean that I do get all my products. I review also a lot of products I bought myself. I started these reviews because from my experience not every tool from China was worth buying. So I wanted to make in-depth reviews to show you which products you should consider and which product you better leave alone. The fact that Banggood sent me products occasionally does not change the way I make my reviews.
I still give in-depth reviews and give you my honest opinion! On this, you can count on! I have a good experience with Banggood.com and they have a lot of woodworking tools nicely organized on their site.

Digital Calipers: I have had a few over the years, and my biggest gripe has been almost universal: Battery cover security, plastic items tend to break, or bulge, metal covers seem to mostly rely on a screw to keep them in place, where 2, or even 3 might be better I reverted to a set of dial style calipers, but will be most interested to see what, if any,, solution some of the creators of all these beautiful Chinese tools can come up with, maybe something that does NOT use an LR44 battery, maybe something like a 1520 or even a 2016

I spent the money on the Incra PushGuard. They’re 30 USD each and I bought two. That’s 60 dollars on safety that I think are worth it. I have the PowerTech set that looks the same as that orange set and I think they’re also worth it. Trying to say that when it comes to push blocks/sticks the price is secondary to function in my shop. Oh and I impulse purchased the Veritas version of the stop rule. Love it but that Banggood one looks super super similar down to small details.
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 3 года назад
I agree. I have two also, and for me they are worth the money. I am impressed how good they stick. But, it took me some time before I decided to purchase them. And in that time, a set like this, is a good start.

Another very nice video! Thank you for teaching me some things about the tools. I am definitely going to look at that set of gage blocks: the price looks very reasonable since for the same US$ I could only get a set will maybe half as many inch blocks. I have been using inch measurements for more than 60 years, but can just as easily use mm for testing measurement tools. The only other things I would mention is that the blocks should have a very thin coat of light oil when stored, and it is usual practice to wear light cotton gloves when handling them. Fingerprints can cause corrosion.

The thing about calipers isn't only the accuracy. Actually, all of these are more than fine for wood working since wood isn't a dimensionally stable material. The problem is often grabbing a set of calipers where the battery has been drained by high quiescent currents. That's the big difference between a Mitutoyo and a Hazard Freight one, for example. Not saying you need to spend $$$ on a Mitutoyo, but have a set of watch cell batteries handy when buying a cheap set of digital calipers;-)

I got a mitutoyo caliper “verified by wish” for around 25 USD. It arrived with a certificate and everything seems like the real deal. What you say about the batteries is true. My mitutoyo gets a long life out of a battery and it didnt cost a lot of money either. When I looked for the same caliper at my local shops it was priced well over 100 USD!

I'm not sure I never really got along with any kind of digital calipers. My favorite pair of calipers to use is the old analog mitutoyo I got from my dad. I also have an analog pair from scala but I don't know they just don't feel like my old and beaten mitutoyo. 😅

Lots of good information in this video. I have a cheap caliper from Harbor Freight and haven’t had any problems with the batteries like others have mentioned. I’m serious think about upgrading to these calipers. Merry Christmas 🎄
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 3 года назад
Hi Greg, I didi not find any problems with the batteries, I have them a few months and the batteries are still OK. But what I found out is that the differences between calipers under 20-30 dollar is not big. So, if you have a Harbor Freight that function ok, question is, if this one would be an upgrade. I found the cheap Caliper very good, It was remarkable stable and on par with the 60 dollar caliper with accuracies. But for woodworking, they all where good enough. The difference between a 20-30 dollar Caliper and my 60 dollars, is that the expensive one, slides better. You can feel that and that is a noticeable difference that could be worth an upgrade. If found the cheap Caliper better than the 26 dollar caliper like I said in the video, but that is to small for an upgrade in my opinion. So, when you happy, I would invest in another item. Merry Christmas.

It’s good that you mention the finish on products so often, it’s the one disappointment I almost always have but I suppose that the finish costs money and low cost will probably mean that it’s not finished. Perhaps you can talk about how to add your own finish when you get a tool, you’ve already said to wipe them clean and I’ve found that just blowing the threads (compressed air) will dramatically improve the screw function. I also like to “break” the edges of things like a vernier caliber so that it’s nicer to handle, not the measurement parts.
@HookedonWood

I agree, in some videos I did. But especially the cheaper products you can make better with just a little bit of help.

I ordered the set up blocks using your link Dennis, (as usual) so I was happy. However, one thing that really bugs me about Bangggod, is that, that article had four price tags, ranging from $62 - $95!!! I spent a long checking if they were the same, or different quality. They appear to be exactly the same. Wish they wouldn’t do that.

Thanks for another great video! The calipers are very interesting! I've seen other videos about cheap calipers and that the downside is that the batteries drains fast. This due to the measuring mechanism not powering down when turned off. Might be interesting to report on if you notice it running out of power strangely fast :)

These tools look ok, BUT if you want to get them in a reasonable time forget it. Ordered a few tools to try them out, and eight weeks later they are still not here. It said delivery in one week and they were coming from California. I could have walked to California and back by now. I look on the website and it says they are in shipment. Maybe in Europe it is better, but in the US these are virtually useless if you need them in a reasonable time frame.
@PhilGroene
@PhilGroene 3 года назад
Europe: My orders from Banggood always arrive in 1-2 weeks. Probably because they have their own shipping system which also offers tracking. Totally different with Aliexpress where 4 weeks are normal and sometimes it takes 8 weeks or never is also an option

I love those corner clamps A combination of 4 100mm ones and 4 160mm ones is what I was thinking....but you think 100mm ones are too small? Maybe 4 120mm and 4 160mm is good for all-round use?
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 2 года назад
Depending on the work you do, 100mm can be an excellent choice. But I always grab for the bigger ones. You should also consider that when you want to use the 100mm version with the small clamps, if they are pointing to each other (so both to the inside) with the small version they almost touch! So, when you do not only use it for small boxes, I think the 120mm is the better choice. One, way or the other, they all are a bargain. Good luck!

IMHO the precision of any digital caliper is more than enough for woodworking. The primary reason I bought a Mitutoyo caliper was power management. Cheap calipers consumes almost as much power turned off as in use. Yes, you can buy a lot of cheap batteries with the price difference, but I don't fell good discarding them so often, even without actual use. I used to remove the batteries after use, but it's too annoying.
@langrock74
@langrock74 3 года назад
You'd think the Chinese would have figured out by now how to copy the Mitutoyos by now ... and sell them at half-price;-)
@turningpoint6643
@turningpoint6643 3 года назад
@@langrock74 They have, or are at least producing almost undetectable counterfeit copy's of Mitutoyo digital calipers on places like Ebay. Undetectable in the sense that the user manuals, storage box, and the calipers aesthetics are almost perfectly done unless you know where the few mistakes are. The calipers internals, accuracy and battery life in no way match what the genuine Mitutoyo's are.Today and unless there being sold through a well known and reputable tool dealer it's almost for sure anything you get on Ebay will be counterfeit. It's a well known issue not only by Mitutoyo themselves but also by most machinists. www.mitutoyo.com/news/counterfeit-mitutoyo-products/ While Mitutoyo's battery life is well over double of the cheap one's, I still bought there solar powered so there's never a drained battery. There also the smoothest, most accurate and best digital calipers I've tried so far. But at almost $200 most aren't willing to spend that much. Tbh calipers aren't made nor designed for extremely high precision measurements anyway. Despite having that .0005" on the inch setting there at best repeatable to maybe .001"-.002" in highly trained hands. When I'm machining metal and if I have to be certain of my accuracy to less than .005" then that's what micrometers are designed to do. That .0005" digit can be ignored since it's meaningless due to the mechanical design of calipers. Yes sometimes they can measure and display very accurate measurements sometimes. But guaranteed repeatable accuracy every single time is how measurement instruments are rated. An industry world wide standard for even the very best is they have to repeat within + - one count to pass inspection. Yes most times they will be better, but the equipment is allowed to be that far out and still pass there inspections.

Every inexpensive digital caliper I've owned leaked current to the extent that I could not store the battery in the device. Also the compartment holding the battery is flimsy and breaks if you use it a lot (as you must if the battery leaks). So for woodworking I prefer dial calipers, one metric and another for U.S. customary units (inches etc.)
@langrock74
@langrock74 3 года назад
Amen to that. The quiescent current on cheap-o calipers is outrageously high ... not even sure how they get them to be this bad. Digital is nice, though, especially if it can display fractions for those being damned to work in imperial units ... sigh.

I know what you mean with the push blocks. That is why I made my link to the vendor that only sells the set. There are also vendors that sell the set (on which the text is based) And you have 6 options, where you can choose between the set (which is shown in a picture) and the separate products (which are also shown in the thumbnail. The problem is that the text does not change. So, I agree that something like this works when you can choose different colors. But not to separate a complete set. On the other hand, you see that prices change with every option. And of course, there is a reason for that. But thanks for letting us know because I agree that it can be a bit confusing. But it is not that you paid 26 dollars and got 1 piece. You probably paid 6 - 10 dollars and thought that includes the whole set.

Ive often been criticised for only buying mititoyo measuring instruments but have always had the last laugh at colleagues who buy chinese instruments. Due to the following reasons. Crap battery life. Premature screen cracking. Thimble wheels breaking off. Battery lid cracking. Jaw inaccuracy. Difference between jaw and depth reading. Generally a shorter life span. Mititoyo IP67 coolant proof would be a go to .Or non coolant proof if you never deal with soluble oil.

Garry not Linda. Merry Christmas Dennis and thank you for the surprise video. One test I would've liked to see was repeatability. My digital caliper looks exactly like the $12 unit you tested but I didn't buy it from Banggood. It does not always read the same. I can measure a piece, close the jaws back to zero and remeasure and it won't necessarily read the same it may be off just a bit. Having worked as a machinist I've used a lot of precision tools and I still have some micrometers and a dial indicator. When I want a precise measurement, which in my woodworking isn't all that often, I grab my Mitutoyo dial caliper. Instant reading, no batteries, always ready to go. Thanks again from the US. Garry

Try mitatoyo calipers. They will tell you how accurate your blocks are. Merry Christmas Dennis to you and your family
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 3 года назад
Thanks Needaman, I think calipers that tells me how accurate these blocks are are way too expansive. The company I visit in episode 7 has an High end height gauge but that is accurate on 500th of a mm. So, even these can not measure the exact deviations.
@needaman66
@needaman66 3 года назад
@@HookedonWood yes they are expensive, but extremely accurate, excellent craftsmanship, ect. But no problem. I also got a set of blocks from banggood. I think they are accurate enough fore me. I dont have mitatoyo but i have another Australian high end set

Actually, you wouldn't use calipers at all for accurate measurements of setup blocks, but rather a micrometer. The Mitutoyos are definitely better than the $10 Hazard Freight ones, though;-)

The setup blocks are called slips and are mainly used to check measuring tool accuracy (in a temperature controlled room) such as vernier claipers, micrometers and height gauges etc. They are "wrung" togther to form additional sizes as required an aspect you did not show or know about?

Well, I did not the orange caliper. In episode 14 was a pocket hole jig I did not recommend. But you are right. Last year I also have some tools that are not good. And from Next year I will show every episode also a tool that you should avoid.

I bought the $12 caliper before I saw this video. It would be over priced at 12 cents. The measurements are not even close to being accurate. Threw it in the trash and bought a better one.

i never use electronic calipers, they are good for people having trouble reading mechanical calipers and that's about it. they always need lots of resetting to zero and that tells a lot. chances are that 2 measurement are not the same. never happened to mechanical ones, no batteries, no reset. and i prefer the 0.05 ones mechanical
@HookedonWood

I can understand your comment and you are 100% right. But I found the electronic calipers accurate enough for my woodworking and therefore more convenient to use. And I really hate when I have to turn on my reading glasses☹️

Got myself a Mitutoyo after I had enough of my previous one a) constantly draining the battery turning unusable when I _need_ it and b) occasionally reading the wrong dimensions, by a _LOT._ I also cannot get over the constant clacking I hear coming from your cheap Callipers... What is up with that? Not even my "cheap" ones do that, and it would drive me nuts 😮

Hi Dennis Thank you for the GREAT reviews. They are all very enjoyable and clearly understandable (by all your viewers I'm sure). Your latest intro though, shows an INCORRECT use of the planer blade guard. This may mislead others and has already induced a comment regarding the planer guard. PLEASE remove this part of the video and/or replace it to show the CORRECT use of the guard. The blade guard of a planer is designed to cover ONLY THE EXPOSED PART of the blade. This is generally very obvious by the facility to slide the guard in and out horizontally above the blade. The planing action of a planer blade has a tendency to lift the wood as it passes over the blade. This requires pressure above or very close to the blade to keep the wood flat to the planer table. Your method does not allow for this pressure application and may cause variations in thickness of the wood being planed (possibly marks like snipe marks along the length of the wood). While this method MAY produce a satisfactory finish in your applications, it is an incorrect use of a machine guard and should not be a misleading part of a video that may be seen by "new" woodworkers. Best wishes Dennis and I look forward to many more great videos. :-)

Hi Zen, The way I used it, is exactly the way is described in the manual of this machine. It is why the safety bridge is adjustable in height. I do not think there is a right and wrong here. In the manual is written to do it this way till wood thicknesses of 75mm. That is the reach of the height of the safety bridge. With thicker wood, you use it as you subscribed it. The same counts for when you plane the sides. I understand you worry about the wood being flat on the table. But I do not think there is a big difference when you push the wood against the outfeet table 15mm sooner, because that is what we talking about. Anyway. Thanks for your comment. Here you can find the operation document from Felder: maschinen.felder-gruppe.at/uploads/document/Manual_A3-26_A3-31_A3-41_EUS_enc.pdf Page 44. Thanks, Dennis

how did you find repeatability on calipers? work with metals a bit and have a few different calipers, and something i have found is that they don't always return to zero on closing and need to be re-zeroed. wondering if you found the same thing? have a great xmas

Hi, yes good question. I had it filmed but one way or another I forgot it to put in my video. From 10 slides (normal slides) I had to re-zero it ones.

@@HookedonWood that's not too bad. find it depends on how hard you bring jaws together. sometimes no resets, other times reset pretty much each time. always worth checking for zero before measuring anything anyway.

Hello Dennis as I mentioned it to you in a comment many many months ago that I retired from the airline industry and of course that airline was AF/KLM. I was most horrified when you state that while the push block combo is a lot of bang for your buck the color orange was not very nice. I hope for your health and wellbeing that in your Dutch language version of these reviews this comment is edited out. I would think that anything orange is sacred in the Netherlands What a great community service your channel has provided all of us this past year and I thank you for all you do. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy this great holiday season with the family. Stay safe and will be looking for you in Jan/feb 2021 Harleymike/Chicago

Hi Michael, haha, At the moment of my review, I was not thinking about it. But you are right. But the average Dutchman will forgive me. That said, the Dutch orange is beautiful, and this push block is just a little bit different the wrong way. Thanks for your support this year, looking forward to read something back from you in 2021. Stay safe, and a merry Christmas an happy new year.

Thumbs up to a ruler video :) My reference for good quality standards is Woodpecker and Starrett as well. Although in general, I have been pleased to add some of these lower cost and somewhat novel tools from Banggood to the shop. The spot on machinist squares are an interesting indicator to how high quality some of these critical tools can get from this vendor. I've learned that delivery time can be an issue however!

About the "sliding ruler" at the end (in Dutch also called a "kruishout"). I bought one from scala that looks nearly identical. I guess there's only that much one could do to make a tool like this different? The one I have from scala is really nice to use and I find it being a rather versatile and useful tool. Especially when it comes to marking repeated marks it's my go to. Best of all is that it isn't even that much more expensive than the one you showed.

Hi Dennis! Thanks for the review! I have a question, how’s the wringability of those gage blocks? Can you stick them together?
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 3 года назад
I do use them by sticking them together. Because of the nice finish that is possible, but the tolerances on these products are so fine, that I can not check it. You have bars that can hold these blocks together, and for serious measurements I would advice this. (I do not know if you can buy those bars on Banggood, but I saw people use these kind of products to hold them tight together.
