China vs Japan: The Diaoyu/Senkaku-Islands dispute

This video explains the territorial dispute over the Diaoyu or Senkaku Islands between China, Japan and Taiwan. The conflict exists in its current form since the 1970s and has caused worrying incidents involving Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese militaries and navies, which some have argued could even lead to war.
Due to the political nature of this conflict, conversations over this topic tend to get heated or one-sided. In this video I try to present the facts of the conflict as neutrally as possible. Reaching a better mutual understanding is often the first step towards solving a problem. I hope this video can contribute to that.
Thanks for watching!

@@jw1731 I put in the flag Emoji haha. Kinman and Matsu certainly play an important role in Taiwan strait politics. There has been a time during the Cold War when the US asked Chiang to withdraw troops from Kinman and Matsu. But obviously, that never happened. The reason being, if ROC troops withdraw from these two places, ROC would completely lose legitimacy over mainland China. And from the PRC's point of view, having the government that runs Taiwan to have holdings that belong to a Chinese mainland province ties Taiwan to China (as opposed to independence). And that was the consensus during the Cold War.

I live in Japan so I find this fascinating as well as Japan’s disputed islands with Korea and Russia. While there is an impasse now as neither side will give up their claim, part of the issue seems to be that the US didn’t care about these when defining “home islands” that Japan could keep control over in 1945.

Personally, I am way less interested in the Senkaku/Diaoyu and Takejima/Dodko. When I read both arguments, both seem to have at least SOME points. However, some Kuril Islands are so clearly part of Japan historically and geographically. The treaty of SF says Japan keeps all islands that it didn’t acquire thru invasion/ colonization. Now, if Ainu or Giliyaki formed a new nation and claimed the territory, I’d be very sympathetic, but IMO Russia should have no claim at all.
@TomKellyXY
@TomKellyXY 3 года назад
@@deadby15 The Senkaku/Diaoyu and Takejima/Dodko are worth following not because of the merits of claims by either side but because of the stakes. What may have seemed a minor detail to western powers, could lead to conflict if not resolved. The Kuril Islands (and Ryukyus) were arguably also annexed by invasions. As a New Zealander I'm very aware of indigenous land claims and how often they're overlooked. The issue is what were Japan's borders before this? Japan agreed to relinquish claims to lands gained from wars with China and Russia pre-dating WW2. Borders were not well-defined that long ago. The Japanese territory dispute with Russia is a claim that 4 islands were not part of the Kuril islands and we always part of Ezo/Hokkaido. Museums in Sapporo still depict these are part of Hokkaido prefecture and Japanese citizens are asked not to go there as showing a passport to Russian authorities would be seen a giving legitimacy to Russian claims. However, in all 3 disputes there does not seem to be obvious resolution as it would political suicide for either side to give up their claim without a massive deal in return.

When Americans leave this place, they will create problems in this place. This will help the United States to control or destroy these countries in the future. The Diaoyu Islands is a problem deliberately created by the United States.

In fact, the Diaoyu Islands belong to China. When there was no such country as the United States in the world, the Diaoyu Islands were already the territory of China. At that time, Japan worshipped China and learned from China.

It’s one of the foundations for establishing official diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China(PRC). So yes, the One China policy is supported by your country (the US, Germany, France, the list goes on). The Republic of China(ROC, Taiwan) is not recognized as a country in the UN. And it has no representatives in international organizations (cause it ain’t a nation). Don’t try to make it like PRC is making an ostentatious claim not supported by anyone but herself. The problem is very simple, the Taiwan Islands belong to China's territory since ancient times, and the Diaoyu Islands are part of the Taiwan Islands. China ceded the Taiwan Islands to Japan, and Japan claimed the Diaoyu Islands as its territory after the defeat. But the matter is not as simple as it seems. The US supports Taiwan's conflict with China and Japan's conflict with China to contain China's development. Therefore, whether it is the South China Sea issue, the Taiwan Strait issue, or the Diaoyu Islands issue, the essence behind it is the United States' containment of China's rise. Whether it is the Eastern Europe incident, the war in Afghanistan, the Gulf War, the war in Ukraine, behind the United States to contain Russia's development. Unfortunately, the Soviet Union was defeated by the United States, and China is emerging as a new challenger. China is challenging the American-led order, just as the United States challenged the British-led order a century ago. In the contest of superpowers, guns are the real justice.

In legal terms not necessarily. They need to be able to sustain human habitation, however the Islands lack basic resources such as a fresh water source which are needed for that purpose. Even if people were to set up permanent houses there, they would be entirely reliant on water, food and anything else from elsewhere. That makes it difficult for the Islands to be recognised as actual Islands in International law. However this hasn’t prevented nations from utilising buildings to strengthen their claim, China does so in the South China Sea and South Korea has done so on the Takeshima/Dokdo Islands.

It’s all about economic zone. The island is just a piece of no life rock but allows Japan to declare a large economic zone to fish. Historically the island was a part of Taiwan’s Pin-Don (屏東縣)county its only 140 miles north east of Taiwan (much far away from Japan) and got colonized by Japan along with Taiwan in 1900. 1943 US, UK, Russia and China signed Cairo Declaration and agreed Taiwan returning to China after WW2 which includes this island by default. However, US transferred the ownership to a private Japanese in 1970 without Taiwan’s consent. Then this Japanese gave the island to Japanese government so Japan can declare economic zone which means Taiwanese fishing boats will enter Japanese territory as soon as the boats leave ports. Protest in Taiwan started in 70s, I remember because I participated. China didn’t get involved till recent year the pro Japan taiwan government stopped claiming the island. Chinese coast guard filled the missing Taiwanese coast guard to protect Chinese and Taiwanese fishing boats in the region against Japanese coast guards and navy. Chinese position is this island a part of Taiwan and Taiwan is a part of China, hence Chinese has the duty to confront Japan and US to protect Chinese sovereignty. Japan did the same thing to another smaller rock east of taiwan, claiming it’s an island and arrests Taiwanese fishing boats. The pathetic Taiwanese government keeps silent on the matter and China is not engaged.

Wrong fact. The island is considered to be part of Yilan County, Taiwan. Pintung is the southernmost county of mainland Taiwan and is perhaps the farthest mainland Taiwan county (aside from the Taiwanese Spratly territories under Kaohsiung County's rule) from the Tiaoyu-Tai/Senkaku island. The only reason that Taiwan has remained relatively cautious is because of Chinese threat and China's potential invasion. Only when Taiwan regains its full statehood can it protests its territorial disputes with one of its closest allies strongly and openly.

the point here is not really just the resources of the island, but the 12 nautical miles or 22 kilometers of territory (including military's) rights who owns the island. If China officially owns it, it can setup military bases North of Taiwan, South of Japan and Korea and potentially keep US pacific naval forces 350km out from it coast line. It is so strategic for China and Japan / US will not want it to go to China. 2 cents

You are doing excellent job on this video. Even many Taiwanese and Chinese don't know much except it's mine. One Taiwanese RU-vidr made an excellent neutral video. Let me reference his plus mine. Taiwan claims because fishmen in Yilan county went to that region until 1971. China claims because of travel log. My friend even emailed to a lot people that Qing emperor rewarded the deed of island to an official. The problem is China never set up military post. China never even built bathroom let along hotel. China showed little interest in naval power until 20th century. China naval was not good until 1990s. Ming and Qing government wee not interested in outlying island. Qing almost gave up Taiwan in 1681. Some Chinese established Republic in part of Borneo and wanted to give to Qing. Qing refused. It made sense that China didn't care that small island in tye old day. What about that official who got the deed? He just used that deed to brag the closer relation he wa with emperor. He never bother to travel to that middle of nowhere island. He never sent his slaves to clean the island let along building bathroom. He would use that energy n money to buy the virgin right of teen prostitutes. The deed was symbolic until some Chinese found it. That deed did not mean anything. Chinese emprrors loved to offer the lands they did not control to nobilitied. Again, symbolic. Taiwan really wanted that Island, but US was in charge and Taiwan needs US. US feels its safe that Japan control because China could potentially conquer Taiwan but not Japan. That RU-vidrs mentionef it could be US intend so Taiwan Japan n China can fight forever. Communist China was in big mess, great leap forward, culture revolution. China did not have enrrgy. Plus , China wanted world recognition. When China and Japan established diplomatic relation, Japan had to cut the relation with Taiwan. Japan did, in return, China does not talk about Diaoyutai, Okinawa n Kuril island. Yes, China also claims those. Until 1971, Chinese n Taiwanese textbooks n fficial documents recognized Japan owned the islands. Then somebody found out there is nature gas reserve. Suddenly, China and Taiwan start todig old maps, don't forget the deed. Japan argument is Japan wad the first marked and constructed the island. One Japanesr told me that. Taiwan did not want China to have it because China could easily invaded Twiwan. Taiwan does not want to anger Japan and USA, the closest military, economic , and technology allies. Taiwan cannot backdown. That is political suicide. Yilan county residents will revolt if any minor concession happens. You already did excellent analydis on China n Japan stanCe
