What Happened to the Most Dense City in the WORLD
50,000 residents lived in Kowloon City making it 119 times as dense as New York City. This claustrophobic enclosure was home to 33,000 families all crammed in some 300 interconnected buildings. The total area is just 6.4 acres (0.01 sq mi, 0.025 sq km), roughly equivalent to 4 football fields. Given that all the blocks were mercilessly jammed into one another, the apartments on the inside didn’t have access to sunlight and fresh air. For many residents who lived in the upper levels of the city, the roof was an invaluable sanctuary; a place to escape the windowless flats below.
