It doesn't, when the government opens a bid for a piece of military equipment, the capability requirements of the resulting equipment are extensive and numerous in order to ensure that when they get shipped the minimum viable product it's still mission capable. Overengineering increases up front costs and malfunction rate. The deaths happen when equipment is used outside of its scope or lifespan, including enemy ingenuity. It's very similar actually to how strategists simulate war by giving the enemy every benefit of the doubt while obeying Murphey's law on your own. The military industrial complex is hyper efficient. Stuff that doesn't work doesn't get or stops being produced, and defense contractors still want to win the next in line contract. To botch a contract would be the end of that company

The United States military was vastly superior to NVA and Viet Cong military forces. The kill ratio of American and Allied forces compared to NVA and Veit Cong forces was about 3:1. If you only look at American casualties compared to NVA and Veit Cong casualties, the ratio grows even larger. The US bombed North Vietnam into a peace treaty before pulling troops out of the country. Only when the US had withdrawn from Vietnam did the North violate the treaty and conquer the South. It's clear that in an all out war between the two nations, what the outcome would have been. In what way did the US lose to Afghanistan? The United States occupied Afghanistan for 20 years. 20 YEARS! @@buracksJ Heh, nope the West doesn't always win battles, but if it had been 30+ years earlier, then the US would have almost certainly have won for several reasons. The two points about Western warfare are still 100% valid: 1. The West was in Vietnam and not the reverse. 2. The body count was insanely lopsided which is a major point. Combat losses to US forces in 11 years of fighting equaled the annual US deaths from car accidents. Heck, with a fully trained Western style military and facing more tanks and artillery than the Nazis invaded France with, the South Vietnamese held hard and only fell because the socialists in Congress had refused for several years to fund the treaty obligation on military supplies and denied the US treaty obligation to defend an ally when attacked.
