If someone calls u coolie in Jamaica it depends on the context. Kids in school called mi coolie gal to upset me but usually it’s Indian. 😂😂. Jamaicans overall don’t mean anything bad.
Jamaicans have a name for everyone even when they know your right name and if you act like you don’t like the name it will get stuck…😂. The funniest one I heard is a man who had one hand shorter than the other, his nick name was CLOCK 😂😂😂😂. I thought that was so hilarious.
As a Jamaican I know that its not considered to be negative whenever someone is referred to in those term. I am of mixed race black and Chinese and is sometimes call chinyman by my friends as a way of identifying me from others but they do know that I am not. Everyone has a nickname in Jamaica 🇯🇲 😂
In Jamaica the term coolie man is not derogatory, it's a term of endearment. I family member we call coolieman and family member we call chin, and a blk. It not an insult.
In my small town in the 60’s ,there were lots of people with nicknames ! Some liked it others didn’t eg, Flowers, Soda bum, Shut( shirt) etc . They were reasons behind these names, too long to go into it!😊😊
Growing up in the hilly countryside of Jamaica. I would have gotten a good whipping from my parents if I didn't address the East Indian lady as "Miss Coolie" and her husband as "Maas Bubu". I thought that was their names, and I had better show respect as a child. It wasn't until I got to America that I learned these words are derogatory. In Jamaica, nobody make a fuss about it. One man in my district was "Black Bway". That was his name. And it wasn't used mean spirited. He gladly responded to that name. That my friend, is JAMAICA. Yellow Man? Horse Mouth? We only bestow such names on people we love. BTW "Indian" is also derogatory.
Coolie is not offensive .In Kingston "coolie would be what y'all refer to as "dugla" and Indian would be reserved for full bloods .We also have 3 "coolie towns in Kingston.

We are descriptive people we describe you using the obvious which is what we see, so a short person is called short man, a white person is called white man, a person with a limp is called Limpy, and long haired person is called Tall hair, learn to realize each culture is different.
