1. Lucky custard cream buns (shaped as mandarins)
Good fortune fruits such as mandarins oranges help to encourage promotions and growth - it’s an absolute bonus if they look like delicious custard bars!
2. Chinese New Year Cake (年糕/Nian Gan)
The word for ‘cake’ in Cantonese and Mandarin is a homonym for tall or high and symbolises a successful year ahead - from promotions to good luck
3. Dumplings
As they resemble little money pouches or gold ingots, eating them is believed to bring prosperity and fortune (I need no excuse to eat more but I’ll take it!)
4. Spring rolls
In a similar way of thinking, these are traditionally eaten during spring festival and is thought to represent wealth as they look like gold bars!
5. Prosperity Salad Toss
Thought to have originated in China, a modernised take of this raw fish salad is widely celebrated in Malaysia and Singapore. Serving up a colourful platter of ingredients and seasonings, the ritual involves adding a small dish in a specific order one at a time, each with their own auspicious meaning and auspicious phrase to chant whilst doing so to promote luck, health and success throughout the year
6. Roast duck
if you love Cantonese food, roast meats and duck, this is a must visit all year round but especially during Lunar New Year!
7. A whole fish
The word for ‘fish’ in Cantonese and Mandarin is another homonym for ‘surplus’ so eating it will encourage an abundance of wealth

Symbolise family and unity
9. Sweets and desserts
This will bring sweetness and fortune to the New Year!
