Mei Mei
- - - - - - - -
We ordered:
*Kaya Toast Set (with soft boiled eggs and kopi gu you)
*Nasi Lemak (coconut rice, sambal, peanuts, anchovies, cucumber, fried egg and deep-fried chicken)
*Hainanese Chicken Rice (poached fragrant chicken on rice, cucumber, coriander and chilli garlic sauce)
*Singapore satay set - this was gifted (chicken, beef or mix with peanut sauce)
*Teh tarik ('pulled' Singapore Nanyang tea + condensed milk)
Mei Mei is a restaurant based in Borough Market. The closest tube stations are London Bridge and Borough. It’s run by award-winning chef and friend Elizabeth Haigh. Liz has competed on BBC’s Masterchef, featured in British Vogue’s Forces for Change issue and was the founding head chef at Pidgin which was awarded a Michelin Star within a year of opening under her guidance.
I’ve always loved Liz's cooking but this was my first time trying the dishes at Mei Mei. The menu includes Singaporean brunch items, rice sets, curry, satay, fried carrot cake and a selection of beverages.
For those who love condensed milk, you’ll love the sweet and creamy kopi and teh - you can also have it served without sugar
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Laksa Mania
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
We ordered:
*Melaka Curry Laksa
A bit of hot and sour, with a dash of sambal (Malaysian shrimp based curry paste) - very Nyonya. Yellow egg noodles & rice vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, bean curd puff, shredded egg, fish balls, king prawns
*Penang Assam Laksa
A particularly popular Laksa in west Malaysia. A rich fish broth is cut through with the sweet and sour from lime and tamarind. Udon noodles, flaked mackerel fish, red chilli, shrimp paste, pineapple, cucumber, onion
Laksamania is a 7 minutes walk away from Oxford Circus tube station. Founded by Malaysian chef Danny Tan, the restaurant aims to showcase traditional favourites, unique dishes and the famed street food culture to the people of London. Danny started as a chef at just 17 years old and went on to work at various restaurants in Kuala Lumpur including Hotel Shangri-La.
There’s also a vegan menu available with Danny’s take on classic Malaysian dishes with a plant- based twist.

Thumbs up if you enjoyed this London video and comment below your fave Malaysian or Singaporean dish... or which one you’d want to try from this video! This was filmed in mid-February but thought I’d share this now as inspiration for where to eat once we’re on the other side! Big thank you to Nigel for joining me in this video and to Ed for his brilliant filming!

My favourite Malaysian dish is KL Hokkien Mee (not to be confused with Penang Hokkien Mee), favourite Singaporean dishes would be Singapore Laksa and Mee Siam, authentic ones are hard to come by outside Malaysia and Singapore respectively. When in London, we go to the Malaysian restaurant in Camden Town (forgot it’s name) because it’s pretty authentic and close by.

As an American who spent a few months in Malaysia I can tell you some of their cheapest dishes at the most hole in the wall spots have been the best food Ive ever tasted. Theres a small outdoor cafeteria that sells food that cost me only 2 dollars but it was so good i still think about it to this day. I went once a week for months straight. The lady who worked there would see me come in, and just nod and say "sit, sit". Shed have it hot and ready for me in minutes. Love that place and the food.

Hi Nigel, the Peranakans weren't the product of Portuguese marrying the local Malay folks. It was actually when Princess Hang Li Po from China and her entourage came to Malacca and she married Sultan Mansur Shah and her servants also married the locals. That's how the Peranakans aka Baba Nyonya was born. :)

Nyonya is a marriage between Chinese and local Malay cultures when the Chinese arrived. Some of the Chinese men who arrived in Malaysia in the very early days married the local women. I am one of their descendants.
@petraleong
@petraleong 3 года назад
yes that is the text book answer. Just a little additional information, Nyonya or Peranakan, they are actually Chinese merchants that married with the local people of the Malay Peninsular or Indonesian archipelago. The locals were not necessary Malays, since a Malay is defined as someone that is from the Malay Peninsular and is of Islamic religion. However, there were actually Peranakans before the spread of Islam.
@Khatulistiwan
@Khatulistiwan 3 года назад
@@petraleong a Malay at that time was anyone who speaks Malay. Go read up history. There were historical records of people f Chinese descent callig themselves Malay bcos they spoke Malay and practised Malay culture
@petraleong
@petraleong 3 года назад
@@Khatulistiwan at that time yes. However as Malaysia was formed, a Malay person is defined as someone from Malaysia, speaks Malay and of Islamic religion. I personally disagree with religion being used as a definition of a race of people, but that is the law in Malaysia.

No! This girl is very pretentious. But I can certified she is 100% singaporean. Or she can be social nerd or awkward! A lot of singaporean don't like to go out from house. That's why they play too much of phones. It is not healthy. From big data singapore is the place where people spends most of the time on phone. this should be the issues the government to be attend. Lee Hsien Long if you reading this. Please do something. Help our citizens.

5 quid kaya toast 😂 It puts me in mind of how in Indonesia you buy sate (or satay, whatevs) by the 10s. Rule of thumb is like 10 sticks per person, so if you're 2 people with normal appetites maybe you'll order 20 sticks. If you're like my family, the 3 of us tend to finish 50 sticks in one sitting. Now I'm living in Europe (traveling a lot between Germany, France, and Italy) I don't think I could afford the silly pricing of "satay" around here. And here one portion is only 2-3 sticks! 😂

Padi is the plant you get rice from. It literally comes from the word Paddy in English. Before it was commercialised, cili padi were harvested from the wild which are way smaller than the ones you find in farms, thus the name cili padi.

Nigel is more than egg fried rice. I didn't know he was such a foodie. He should do a comics food show. Entertainng and So much chemistry with Shu! I watched most of Nigel's youtube stuff and he's less annoying with people he doesn't know well. More well behaved and genuine. I enjoyed this one best. No uncle Roger impressions on this one. Uncle Roger would approve.

I love Singaporean food! I’m Malaysian and we are usually very proud of our food. Grew up in Malaysia and then lived in Singapore for a few years. At first, I didn’t like their local delicacies like chicken rice and nasi lemak because they are different from those in Malaysia. I would complain and said it’s not “authentic” or “not the same as back at home”. Few years down the road, I grew to love Singaporean dishes and actually miss their food when I’m not there. Malaysian and Singaporean dishes look similar but taste a little bit different :) And they are both delicious in their own ways

yeah slightly overcooked. the egg shouldn’t have a shape when it’s in the bowl. it should be runnier. when they mix the white and yolk tgth, it shouldn’t have pieces of egg white. but i like it really runny. some people prefer it firmer like that

Once the yolk has some coagulation it’s “overcooked” for this dish. The entire egg needs to be silky smooth and slide down your throat. Anthony Bourdain in Singapore asked why eggs aren’t eaten like this all over the world...

Watching this makes me never want to leave Malaysia though I've had thoughts of migrating like many Malaysians do. Despite showing some of the "best" foods in this video, I have to say they still got a long way more to go before they can achieve that traditional and local Malaysian style of cooking. The price point is a whole other issue! Great video and remarks and jokes!

Most of Peranakan food comes from Malay and Southeast Asian culinary tradition. Even Ayam Buah Keluak is from Rawon. Laksa is from Laksam.

@@Khatulistiwan Laksam is in Bangaldesh. Laksa and Laksam may sound alike but there's no evidence that there's any relation. Every state in Malaysia and Singapore has its own version of laksa. Asam laksa with its distinct sour taste from tamarind is known to originate in Penang.
