This is an intro of a Chinese animation movie Jiang Ziya. The movie itself is 3D but the intro is 2D. The art style is inspired by Chinese mural which is considered as more ancient and epic than ink wash style (fog hill five elements). Chinese ink wash painting appears around 100 AD after paper invented. The background is related the war that Zhou Dynasty replaces Shang Dynasty (around 1046 BC). And Jiang Ziya is the commander of Zhou's Army. That's the reason the maker chosen an older art style for the intro. The women is Daji, a fox deamon which is on the side of Shang Dynasty.
@zachhoy

The war is too old to have concrete records in detail. The only concrete record from archaeological excavation just says the war exists in a certain period. @lynth

This entire animation is based entirely on Gankutsuou. The woman he is analyzing is effectively a female copy of Edmond Dantès of Gankutsuou. The hair even has the same colour, including the golden outline, and the animation style is exactly the same.

I love how when all that fire and gore first appears in the back of her throat, it's so chaotic and messy, but when she does actually breath it out, she does it as if blowing out a candle, almost gracefully, which I guess shows her nature. I'm just mesmerised by the movement of the character, everything she does is so graceful and 'flowy' I guess...I feel like all that mess at the back of her throat depicts her true character, I dunno, but I just love that contrast.

@@Bufekana ARCANE is also one of my favorites!! Please, if you are not asking for spoilers or feel annoyed when you read a nerd geeking out, don’t continue reading this. The animation behind the series is so good; their expressions, the aesthetically stunning and confusing style when JINX were talking to herself shows that she is very disassociated with the reality, the wonderful motion of a once-rotten-villain to a devoted father, and the irony of the history repeating. Don’t forget how Pow/Jinx is a jinx in the end by firing towards Piltover one minute after they decided to give Zaun freedom. It was so good that I had repeatedly watch it until the new season came out. With this style that I, at first, felt like it wouldn’t work, turns out to be one of the best western animation I have ever watched in a long time. Shawty i didn't say that the west should continue ignoring 2d animation, but saying that 3d animation is "cheap" is far from fair. Also your point kind of falls apart without assuming that 3d animation is objectively worse because asia really doesn't use 3d animation very often, yet you said that they have "taken the crown as the best animators in the world."
@Sakuyamon
@Sakuyamon 2 года назад
@@shigalarson2359 dude i never said that you said that. But a lot of 3d animation is cheap, thats the reason why there are tons of extremely bad looking 3d animations and its also the reason why it has taken over for 2d, its literally cheaper to produce currently. Also, you are wrong, Asia do use quite a bit of 3d animation, the difference is that they try to match it to their 2d so you cant see the difference or they use it as a tool to improve the 2d shots. They are far more experimental with both their 2d and 3d while the west is stuck in disney 3d style.
@shigalarson2359
@shigalarson2359 2 года назад
@@Sakuyamon The age of ass 3d animation is kind of in the past because its very easy to render good looking stuff now. That being said it takes a lot of money to render a 3d animation so it isn't necessarily cheaper. That's kind of fair but also not really the same thing as generally that is considered a separate thing called 2.5d. Also i will agree that disney has a pretty homogeneous art style, but that is not all of the "west." there is kind of a rebirth of 2d animation going on right now, as well as a lot of very experimental 3d stuff being used, you just have to look a little further than disney. Disney is big, but they're not everything

Some background info: During the Shang dynasty (1075 BCE, was way before Qin Dynasty 221 BCE), Shang Zhou Wang was not a very good emperor. He did not rule the land or people as he supposed to, instead he threw parties often and have many mistresses. Back in those days, kings would have many "wives." They technically are not "wives," only the queen is the wife, other people are mistresses. Anyways, he was so corrupted that Jiang Ziya led a revolution to overthrow him. The villainess was once a mistress but she was so pretty that she became the king's favourite. She became the reason behind the king's corruption because people think that she can seduce men. According to the actual history, people want her dead, so she died by strangulation. There is a book called Fengshen Yanyi (which tells the story of Chinese Myths and Gods). Both Jiang Ziya and Su Daji are not humans and they want to be recorded in the book of myths and become god. Surprisingly both of them never became god. In the book, that villainess (Su Daji) was actually a fox spirit who comes to human world and sucks people's soul out. Jiang Ziya was the warrior that battled with her and won. The scene that you picked is the battle where Jiang Ziya beat Su Daji. She said "we have the same goal" because supposedly after the battle, they can become god as promised by the heaven, but it never came true.

That art style is so incredible!!!!!!!!!!! The best part as well is that it is based (somewhat) on a real story. The eyeballs are representative of the '9 tailed fox' also known as Su DaJi - she was the favourite concubine of the last Shang emperor called Shang Zhou Wang, and one of her favourite 'past times' was to gouge peoples eyes out, perhaps the eyes in her mouth were supposed to be the eyes of her victims. The last emperor and his wife had pools of wine, a 'meat forest' and loved to tear peoples' hearts out. All in all - they were insane. Some have said it was the Zhou dynasty smearing the last dynasty as justification for overthrowing the Shang but it does seem some of the stories of their cruelty is legit. But back to the animation, if only 1 day I could animate like that I'd die a happy man. But for now, I will stick to podcasting lol

I believe they went for certain angles of the faces to show her fox nature. If you at this fox emoji 🦊 notice how the nose bridge is sorta accentuated. And her design is sorta very angular yeah. Also with that camera angle which makes her neck look so unnaturally big is definitely made to be uncomfortable to emphasis on her demon nature. This is just my interpretation. Just *chef's kiss* 👌 Also this clip reminded me of the anime Mononoke in the fact that it's very stylized and the use of texture. Maybe check out that anime if you haven't. Nine tails are super dangerous and sexy. One of the most famous nine tails is Su Daji -- the lady in this video. Folklore says she alone ruined the mighty kingdom in 1046 BC in ancient China. "The Investiture of the Gods" a mythology book written during Chinese Ming Dynasty detailed what a nine tails can do, and what it takes to destroy her. The awesome animation "Jiang Ziya" (shown in this video) is based on this book. The Netflix series "Love Death + Robots" also has an episode depicting nine tails in a dystopia Hongkong. As of modern days in China, calling a lady fox (Huli Jing) is widely considered as a personal attack, unless that lady plays Ahri in LoL :)

My only critique would be that when she turns sideways and it zooms in on her mouth and then back out, the movement seems a big choppy to me, and the zoom in on the mouth seems misplaced. I think that instead of having the turn then zoom in then zoom out all happen in one shot, it should cut to a close up on her mouth while she is facing forward towards the camera, then have something like her licking her lips, and then it stays zoomed in on the mouth as she turns and starts to breath the fire, then it zooms out to her whole face again. Either that, or if you want to keep it one fluid motion, have her put her face closer to the camera while she opens her mouth so that in has that same close up effect, but it doesn’t have the camera actually zooming in. Other than that, this animation is quite incredible, definitely one of the the best 2D animated clips I’ve seen.

Old school animator here. It can't be overstated just how much filling in the software does for you. Used to, every single transition needed to be drawn. Nowadays, the software does most of the work for you. Very cool.

If software did most of the work, we would be overrun with quality animations.

@@soon_to_emerge When we stop to considered how even 30 years ago,, being a self published animator was impossible without a major production studio behind you to now thousands upon thousands of low level animators able to churn out work this good or better at home, publish themselves online, many of which then go viral, I think you have to conceed that we are, in fact, overrun with animators and their commonly high tech animations.

yeah a lot of the filling i do in TVPaint I am able to automate or at least speed up by a factor of 10. it's really wonderful because I'm able to focus more on the creative aspects of the animation

i'm sure it's really frustrating seeing people being able to do the stuff like at 13:00 because you can't really explain anything or base it off of something, as you said it's just creativity, sucks that if you aren't creative you just kinda can't really get stuff like that, it really boggles my mind how people can draw certain things frame by frame with a clear image of how it'll look as a final result and executing it so well, form what you said earlier, this animator is probably very top tier, at least that's what i'm getting from what you're saying & what i'm seeing
@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 2 года назад
i think you're taking the wrong idea from this. No, this animator is not super-human. This animator has put in more time and concentration than you to get where they are. If you put in that same amount of time and concentration, you might not be exactly where they stand, but you would be making some very impressive animations of your own. Just because you can't understand it RIGHT NOW, does not mean you won't be doing it yourself one day if you just stick with it. You don't know what you will know 5 -10 years from now. Creativity is not something you're born with. Creativity is something which can be done deliberately. Read the book Lateral Thinking by Edward Debono. He will teach you how to be creative. It's a science. There have been very few animators through history who have had a photographic imagination. Most of them cannot see clearly what the result of the animation will look like until the drawing starts forming from the marks they are making. It's a rinse and repeat process: add a little here, erase a little there, take it through a round of cleanup and inbetweens - all the time looking at it and re-looking at it, tilting your head, look at it flipped through a mirror... That's what's so fun about the process; the results surprise the artist who is drawing them! And please stop referring to animators as being in tiers (why is everyone doing this? Who the heck started this "god tier / top tier" catch phrase??). They are not separate from other artists. They learned from the artists who came before them. All artists have something of value to offer. Putting artists of different styles and attitudes into a linear tier list reveals your narrow-minded view of what animation is. Separating animators by tiers is a bad paradigm to be thinking in. Sorry I had to say it. I feel strongly about this.

the intro of the flim was....mmmm...no words. Speechless. I felt robbed with the rest of the film's animation style. I want 2D animation to make a comback. 2D works very well with some styles, and here it really shows.

I have seen some excellent examples of Chinese animation over the last few years. You can tell that they are influenced by Japanese animation without it dominating their style; obviously, there are some cultural issues at play, but I'm still glad to see it. I'm saddened by overall cultural direction of China these days, but where there is art, there is hope.

Thanks. I've been focussing my attention on creating an online course for advanced animation, working on commissions for private clients. On top of that, my taste in animation doesn't always align with what is popular right now. I like a lot of obscure animators that people have never heard of. On top of that, I don't really like attracting the fans of these animes over to my community - the Otakus. They are often rude and have nothing interesting to say. I just don't like them.
