Chinese Brands that DON'T SUCK!

"Made in China" usually means that it's not going to last or that the build quality can be expected to be sub-par or poor. However there are companies in China that are starting to break that stereotype! Come with me to China's Silicon Valley and see some of China's home-grown brands that are shaking off the image that "Made in China" means "Junk".
Huaqiangbei (Chinese: 华强北; pinyin: Huáqiángběi; literally: "Huaqiang North") is an area and subdistrict of Futian, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. The area's status as a major electronics manufacturing hub, and sprawling electronics marketplaces have earned it (and Shenzhen) occidental nicknames such as "China's Silicon Valley", and the "Silicon Valley of Hardware".
The subdistrict runs from Shennan Road at SEG Plaza near Huaqiang Road Station of the Shenzhen Metro for 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north to the Pavilion Hotel. It is at the spine of a shopping district, with cross streets Zhenzhong Road (振中路), Zhenhua Road (振华路) and Zhenxing Road (振兴路). Huafa Road (华发路) is immediately parallel to the east with Yannan Road (燕南路) further away. The central area of the district is along Huaqiang Road (华强路), a busy pedestrian street which the district is named after.
The area is characterized by tree-lined streets with wide (5 to 20 metres (16 to 66 ft)) footpaths. Huaqiangbei is famous for its variety of electronics and clothing shops, though it has a notorious history of selling counterfeit and smuggled goods

FYI: Don't make shots with your keys in the background. You'd be surprised how easy a key can be duplicated from a photo/video... Especially if you're filming and publishing in 4k!

@@serpentza what is the brand of your gimbal again?
@Teekles
@Teekles 6 лет назад
I record professionally and I have a recommendation if you'd like. Every camera you showed is optimized for still images and they are all good cameras. You're getting all sorts of capabilities with what you have: low-light, color corrections, macro shots, etc. The fact they take videos is almost an accessory, not their main purpose. For your videos these feature aren't all that necessary and the stabilization is your biggest concern. I'd recommend using a camcorder, which is much better designed to be held steady while moving. The stabilization features you will find in modern camcorders will blow you away, and for very reasonable prices. I recommend to everyone the canon vixia line. From my experience, it's much more convenient than using a camera optimized for still images in addition to a gimbal; in terms of weight, comfort, and video quality. Even the hand strap is a blessing, I think it would benefit you tremendously.

It is Chinese brands that have the connotation of low quality, not Made-in-China products. Basically, China is making literally everything for the entire world, and the quality of products all depends on how much money you are willing to pay. You pay one dollar, you got dollar-tree quality. you pay 900 dollars, you got an iPhone 7 plus. My suggestion is, go looking for Chinese equivalent brands that price at 0.5x-0.8x of western brands (very likely still made in China), and they will be really good bargain. In terms of promoting local brands, China is still far behind, coz it is related to creativity and innovation and things like that. However, if we are talking about have things PRODUCED, China can massively produce state-of-the-art industrial goods as you are willing to pay for it.

the quality control in china is not as good. You can get the same product made by the same company in China and the US one will have better quality control...they did a video just about this very thing.
@xechs88
@xechs88 7 лет назад
It depends on the factory. Some factories are western run and have quality control because it has to meet international standard. Other factories just make whatever with no quality or low control. That's the big difference. It's all made in china and some same products can range in quality based of factory made.
@noyfbnoyfb8476
@noyfbnoyfb8476 7 лет назад
So true. It's not where it's made so much as who makes it and what quality standard they hold their products to. Reputable brands are going to insist on quality regardless of where they located their production.

products like the iphone are assembled in china. not made in china. but yes low end Chinese products are crap and the higher end stuff is good. i just replaced my low end made in china hammer that broke with a much more expensive made in china hammer that Thor would be proud to use.

Hi Winston, I have been quietly viewing your vids for a couple of years. I'm an Aussie who has been making short trips across China for the past ten years with my Aussie wife. Everything you have said in all your vids is completely consistent with our own experiences. We have zig-zagged across the country from Harbin to Sanya, Tibet to Qingdao. We have made many friends, stayed in small villages and big cities. Met the old geezers and the near universally friendly younger generation. All that you say about baijiu drinking, dominating hosts, friendly hosts and pre-programmed hatred of Japan are all true. I have been trying to learn the language, but after 2-300 words, mostly suck at it. (my fault- not theirs). Your videos are slowly filling in the gaps of a vast jigsaw of a Chinese culture and it's all spot on. One topic you have not spent time on is how they regard Westerners (or at least Australians). They can't figure out how one person can do so much different, diverse stuff when we regard it as normal. To be able to write software, rebuild an engine, compose a poem, design a circuit or build a house. I regard these are just normal tasks, but it always surprises them somehow. Many university graduates are too frightened to change a light bulb. Sadly the biggest gap I see in China is limited imagination remaining after formal education. I observe very few who seem able to visualize anything they have not already seen in the past. A fertile topic. Keep up the good work! Haojile!

DirectTech22 Fuck Lenovo. I bought a yoga pro 2. (with an i7, 8 GB of ram, and a 512 gig ssd.) It cost just under $2k after tax. The biggest piece of shit. Problems since day 1. I took it to 3 shops, and they ALL said, "You should always ask repair companies what the best products are. The Lenovos, and the yoga 2 pro, are the ones we see the most of." They have constant issues. Unfixable issues. If I would had known better I would had pursued it more aggressively and sent it back under my state's lemon law. But I am a full time student, and couldn't be without my laptop for extended time. That's why it only saw the shop on vacation times.

Their best products are not their phones I would say As a native Chinese, I don't buy their phones, but I bought a lot of their MJ products such as wiring board, power bank, LED lights, and so on Xiaomi is a brand that united a group of new generation Chinese factories which are quite different from old Chinese factories and really focused on design and quality with decent price I'm glad that as a Chinese I can finally get rid of shitty made in China products now, haha

4k60 if possible, but for quality filmed video footage, 60 fps does little. For animations, screen grabs, streamed gameplay etc, that's a whole different story, as you haven't recorded footage of something in motion, but you're basically simulating motion with a fast slideshow of generated still images. Indo get why many get on the 4k band wagon for RU-vid though. In a 2-3 years from now, its not unreasonable to expect upwards of 50% newly manufactured consumer screens and monitors, to be 4k. And continue to progress that direction. But look at your RU-vid view history. Did you _only_ watch 1 year old content or newer, last month? Of course not. But watching videos recorded and encoded in older, low res (eg. 480p) videos today, does feel a bit lackluster. By comparison, high res recording equipment, is relatively affordable today.

Japan used to be the place that no one wanted a anything from. 80s cars and trucks were abysmal but they improved enormously. China is starting to go that way too. Now the Russians, they still can't build a vehicle to save their lives. Planes or rockets no problem, just can't do a car.

Actually their guitar and car work pretty well even in the 80's... That somewhat different with China... Japan's ibanez guitar were supeeer good the 80's model one but just that it is not we'll known and design is a fender knock off but the sound is supeeer different... And look at tama drums... People say they get better sounding drum kit in a cheaper price than ludwig at that time... This is why Japanese product get famous because of their quality... If their quality are also suck... I doubt they will get famous

Fenix flashlights are quite good. In fact, China has a few well known flashlight brands that are famous around the world if you're into such products. If you're into audio/video, you probably know that OPPO makes some of the best DVD/BD players. Keep in mind though that the R&D of OPPO players are done in the US. Stentor is one of the most well-known and popular violin brands on the market, due to their range of high quality and long lasting instruments. Surprising uh? Who would have thought the Chinese would master the production of an European instrument. Anker is a manufacturer of electronic accessories and their products seem to be well constructed. If you go on Amazon and look at the review ratings, they're excellent. The Chinese are capable of making quality products if they decide to do so. Give them time and eventually their brands reputation will be at the same level as Korea's or maybe even Japan's but that will take awhile.

Let's do something to help each other out: compile a list of Chinese companies and brands that people have personally used and found to be of at least good to excellent quality overall when compared to traditional, Western competitors. Let's actually be productive and positive on youtube for a change. :) Hopefully we can support the Chinese firms that are doing things right. Reward good products with our wallets. - 1MORE [headphone company, Shenzhen]: this company is killing it. Absolutely incredible value and sound and build quality for the money, hitting well above their weight. And they even have one of the best IEM unboxing experiences I have ever had, at almost any price range and I am an extensive IEM user. Best deal IMO are their triple driver IEMs; - ORICO: HK-based computer accessories company...high quality USB hubs, etc...have not let me down yet over the last few years; Not TRULY a China company, but "one country, two systems" yadda yadda yadda.... - TONE CITY / MOOER / JOYO: For musicians out there [guitar pedals mostly], these three Chinese companies are in many ways clones of each other and they are all in turn clone attempts at some of the most recognizable pedal names and sounds in history. Quality in terms of tone varies from pedal type to type, as does consistency of build quality. But in terms of sheer bang for the buck, really hard to argue against these three companies. Worth at least a look and listen IMO; - LENOVO: Enough said, though I have some residual trust issues with them after the whole spyware/malware thing. Hopefully they have learned their lesson not to fuck around with people; - XIAOMI, HUAWEI, OPPO, LeECO, ONEPLUS: All 5 of these smartphone brands are legitimate contenders to the Apple/Samsung/LG thrones. Especially Xiaomi, Huawei and OnePlus as they are working onto the international market - they have no choice but to be at least on par with the current giants if they want to have any chance at all. Time will tell. That's all I got off the top of my head right now...I hope folks here will jump in with their own lists. Yes, IMO, the overwhelming majority of Chinese made/branded products are indeed still garbage in Q2 2017, with the percentage of top tier, global quality Chinese brands being very very low overall. For China's sake, that ratio needs to improve...quickly. Meantime, there are indeed Chinese companies that know how to do things right - and they should be supported. cheers!

China is always making top quality products. The question is whether you would like to pay the price. If you buy cheap Chinese made craps in the west and get pissed, keep it in mind that it's not China's intention to make these craps but YOUR people want China to make really cheap products so that they can make profit. If you double the price you pay (which is sometimes still cheaper than your local products) China is very willing to make products that meet your standard. Now the question becomes can you afford your life then?

I've always had two problems with shooting video on a gimbal: 1. When you press the record button on the camera, you shake the camera. It then takes a little while to settle. It's awkward. It takes two hands. 2. You can't zoom while shooting, since pressing on the lever moves the camera, a lot. I heard some gimbals have a remote wire that can control the camera? What do you use?

This reminds me years ago we used to call "Japanese Cheap Products" and look at the different now. China is going thru the same growing path. China is producing a lot of junks but also high quality products for every level of customers. I am surprised many of their standard products are quite good. This is a huge improvement over a very short period of time.

WRONG... and by the way, many American products suck... most Chinese product suck (percentages man!), some Japanese products suck... now "cost=quality" is a cheap argument as well... quality is the perceived satisfaction towards ones needs. MOST people seem to not be satisfied regarding Chinese quality... so, in fact, said brands suck. Big time in my opinion (but this is only my opinion). Just so you know (and this is a fact not an opinion) craftsmanship in Japan was and is still is one of the highest worldwide, since way before the industrial revolution. And as a very recent example, I had the chance to compare products of the same brand (European, not Chinese) produced by both Japan and China (and other countries in fact) and Japan still came on top. And I mean comparable products (in cost as well, exactly the same brand after all), and although the Chinese made was not bad in itself, was the weakest by comparison, Japanese being the finest. In turn this translates to "home-brewed brands". Now, this is not prejudice, china might be getting better, but still not there yet, sorry...

Good video and going through the gimbal review allowed us all to see what you mean with regards to "good builds". But to add to Xiao mi, Oppo for consumer electronics developed and produced in China. In addition, Apple still makes all of their iPhones in China so is "Made in China" really all that bad? I think it has more to do with internal QC and Management. If they want to build great products they can if the company culture is to put out crap, forget about it.

I think the whole point of the video (and Winston straight out says it a couple times) is that of course China can make world class products - after all, they make a large percentage of the world's manufactured goods. It's just that Chinese businesses tend to not to want to. I think it's a good thing that more domestic companies are realizing that having good quality, aftermarket support, etc will build brand equity/loyalty and allow for higher margin products, and increase their bottom line in the long term, but it's a slow process since they have to rehabilitate consumer habits and expectations both domestically and around the world.

I have had my Nokia for 10 years now. It still works and have to recharge only once in two weeks. If you call the smartphone progress, I disagree. Eventually I will have to go with the flow, unfortunately. I am not against progress. I was one of the first mobile Phone users back in the eighties. But there are two new things I refuse up to now. Smartphones and screens on car dashboards. Both are not good inventions for mankind.

Using a Huawei mate 9 pro myself and absolutely loving it. Great phone for a decent price. I don't need Siri or Brixby and when you buy a Samsung/Apple phone some of the money you pay for the phone is related to these services. I am glad Huawei can deliver an alternative for people who want a great phone but don't need certain features that are designed to only really work in the US/UK. This is coming from someone who has been using Samsung phones for the last 10 years.
