To help you better understand Chinese calligraphy and painting, I created a New RU-vid channal Wu Chinese Art Workshop
/ wÚ chinese art workshop
In Chinese calligraphy, three are eight basic strokes, which most of other strokes were developed based on. And the Chinese character 永Yǒng (means forever) covers all this eight strokes, which is known as 永字八法yǒng zì bā fǎ (eight Chinese calligraphy methods included in the Chinese character Yǒng). This Chinese calligraphy tutorial will give you a detailed introduction of these eight methods. This is the time-table of this video calligraphy lesson:
0:00:08.490 -- 0:01:02.910 Four treasures of writing Chinese calligraphy
0:01:14.960 -- 0:02:09.670 Demonstration of writing Chinese character Yǒng, means forever.
0:02:25.470 -- 0:03:15.829 Details of basic calligraphy stroke Diǎn, dot
0:03:10.010 -- 0:04:30.300 Details of basic calligraphy stroke Héng, horizontal stroke
0:04:20.609-- 0:05:40.700 Details of basic calligraphy stroke Shù, vertical stroke
0:05:40.700 -- 0:06:28.870 Details of basic calligraphy stroke Gōu, hook
0:06:31.840- 0:09:35.680 Details of basic calligraphy stroke Tí, slash moving up from southwest to northeast fast, and long Piě, long slash moving down from the northeast to the southwest fast
0:09:50.760 -- 0:10:48.140 Details of basic calligraphy stroke Duǎn Piě, short slash moving down from the northeast to the southwest
0:10:56.840 -- 0:12:59.640 Details of basic calligraphy stroke Nà, slash moving from the northwest to the southeast.
By the way, there are many writing styles and calligraphy styles in Chinese calligraphy, the writing style that I showed you in this video is called kǎishū, which is considered as the regular script in Chinese writing system since 2000 years ago, and it didn’t changed a lot in the past 2000 years.

Magnificent! I am a calligrapher, but my talent lies mainly in variations of Latin script. Several years ago, I bought some brushes, an ink stone, two ink sticks, and two great books about Chinese calligraphy, which teach each character stroke-by-stroke. The books are helpful, but are ultimately limited. Your video explains the strokes in a way that is easier to understand, and of course seeing you make them also helps a lot. My journey into Chinese calligraphy has been long and challenging, and I still have a long way to go, but I am very happy that I found your video. Thank you so much for sharing this lesson in English with us Westerners!

Howdy westerner, as a Latin by birth I can relate to character 6 which is pié and it means foot in Spanish so I won’t forget it and do find it interesting. Love❤the way miss Becky explains this video and will look forward to mor. Have seen a few and have bought many items to get started but this is very inspirational. 🎉

I don't know if the poetic description is a common practice in calligraphy learning, or it's just her way of explaining, but it really helps understand the flow of the stroke better!

It's the traditional method of calligraphy, which I learn from the Ou style calligraphy master Tian Yunzhang. If you can understand Chinese language, you can check it.

Nì haō, bonjour. I thank you very much for your very instructive video. I think the best I could see by far for the basic strokes. I'm watching more and more video and make a lot of research to better understand this art. Now I would like to try by myself. If I may ask you which kind of paper should I use ? Is it rice paper ? Xièxiè, merci.

Does the brush matter? Or do we need special writing brush? My brush does no't return to the position "after I press for the power stroke.
@MarcoPoloMandarin
@MarcoPoloMandarin 6 лет назад
Hi Evelyn, the brush matters at some point, it mush be the special brush made for Chinese calligraphy or painting, which are mostly made of yellow weasel's hair or sheep's hair, or a mixture of this two. As a beginner, i would suggest to use the mixture one. But what's more important is to learn how to control the inner power, a master can write calligraphy with any kind of brush, including our fingers, but i'm also far from that level, haha~~
