Does Handwriting Reflect Personality in Chinese? That's the question Fiona answers in today's video which delves into the four ancient masters of Chinese calligraphy from Ancient China, and the history of Chinese calligraphy.
===
The expression 字如其人 means that one’s handwriting reflects our personality. 從字可以看出一個人的個性. It’s a concept that’s very deeply set in Chinese culture. It’s said that you could glean insight into great thinkers, writers or painter by their style of calligraphy.

I remember when, years ago, as I was starting to practice Chinese, I would often watch Fiona's videos, which were incredibly helpful. It felt nice when I was looking at videos about calligraphy, and RU-vid showed me this, it reminded me of those times.

You should have way more subscribers and way more hits. Maybe make guest appearances at the Universities that teach chinese. Get the students to know you and the teachers to recommend you. I go to WenZao in Kaohsiung. If you want to visit I’m pretty sure they would love to have you. I’m sure all the others too.

I am interested in going there in the year 2023 or 2024, how was your experience there? how do you progress through each class/level? Were the students in your class motivated to learn? Well, hope you can see this message.

@@OrochiShaka Wen Zao is good, but they also go fast. I think there are 8 levels, I made it through level 4 and then decided to go with a tutor. I have both vision and hearing problems so I’m a bit of a special case. WenZao did provide enlarged lesson material and let me sit in the front. I still follow their curriculum and Im on level 6 or 7 now I think. I feel like I can communicate in Chinese quite well for day to day activities. Also it’s a nice campus in a nice neighborhood, near everything. I definitely recommend them.

@@goukux5908 thanks so much. if you dont mind me asking a few more questions, how many classes a day did you have and how long each one? did you have classes on the weekend? what kind of extracurricular stuff did they provide? and lastly, did other students also think they were teaching a bit fast? And congrats on your Chinese learning adventure improvement given your circumstances 👏👏 i have been learning Chinese for years and i havent improved much,hehe.

@@OrochiShaka classes are 3 hours long 5 days a week. They also can get you tutoring help 2 hours a week from one of the English teacher students. They can be very helpful if you use them right. Also you can schedule up to 2 1/2 sessions with one of the Chinese Teachers. I think the Japanese students thought the pace was OK because they already know a lot of Characters and what they mean and just need to learn to say them in Chinese and some grammar. Western students like me I think we’re mixed. Some of them were there because they are really good at language and they were ok. Some like me were there because they have a Chinese wife and want to live in Taiwan. I think there experience depended on there aptitude. I suck at language so it was hard for me. I have a friend from class that is good at language and had no problem. The instruction is good, comprehensive, and coherent so anyone can work through it, even me. I just needed to do about 20 hours of homework in addition to the 15 hours of class and 2 hours of tutoring to keep up. If I had to I could have continued. I’m retired and can afford a tutor so I took the easy way out. It’s nice that you meet people from all over. The class is rewarding in and of itself.

Hold up, wait a minute! First of all, Ouyang Xun is by NO MEANS considered "the best (Chinese) calligrapher in history." Obviously that honor goes to Wang Xizhi 王羲之 (whose son, Wang Xianzhi, is often accorded equal status), known as the Sage of Calligraphy 書聖. Anyone who knows anything about Chinese calligraphy knows (or should know) this! Second, Ouyang not even universally considered to be the best standard script writer for that matter! Many give that designation to Yan Zhenqing, as his "rough, masculine“ 雄渾 script (I cringe at the word "font") ushered in a new of calligraphic aesthetics, making a strict departure from the soft, elegant styles (including Ouyang's) of previous eras. Thirdly, Liu Gongquan's 柳公權 iconic phrase was actually a thinly veiled admonishment of a dissolute, mediocre emperor. Here the character 正 in the phrase 心正則筆 means "upright" (in the sense of virtuous or just), not "being in the right frame of mind." Last, Ouyang didn't "sit in front of" the stele for three days. Here's a quick translation of the latter part of that famous anecdote: "Dismounting his horse, he stood unmoved until fatigue set in, whereupon he sat on his cloak and continued to view the stele. At night he made his bed next to it and did not leave for three days." You owe it to your viewers to provide higher quality content than this...加油!

on your first point, obviously she meant to say 楷書 calligrapher given that she already explained it when she introduced him. On the second point, 顏真卿's calligraphy was great, and excellent for big works, but there isnt anything wrong saying 歐陽詢's was the best. Just like there wouldnt be a problem saying 顏's was better. To some scholars, either one is true. I think these videos help a lot of people not familiar with this topic to learn more if they do get inspired watching them. It got me to learn about them.
@sextusempiricus7819
@sextusempiricus7819 2 года назад
@@OrochiShaka She called him "the best calligrapher" in history, with a thumbs up gesture yo boot. At another point she called him "one of the best," so she probably know what she means herself...lol Whatever the case, it's definitely not "obvious" that she was referring to standard script writers only. That said, Yan Zheng's standard script without question introduced an entire new aesthetic to the tradition, something that Ouyang was unable to achieve despite his otherwise remarkable skill and talent.
@sextusempiricus7819
@sextusempiricus7819 2 года назад
@@OrochiShaka What do you mean by "excellent for big works"? Yan's standard script is far more varied than Ouyang's. There are at least four or five varieties of his standard script alone. One of his running script manuscripts is the regarded as the second greatest of all time after Wang's Lanting Xu. Overall, Chinese calligraphy is dominated by Wang (and son) and Yan, as essentially every calligraphers by them up until the Qing when the study of ancient stele calligraphy became widespread.
@sextusempiricus7819
@sextusempiricus7819 2 года назад
@@OrochiShaka I get it. By bigger work you mean larger sized characters, not a work that is necessarily bigger in size. In that case, I agree. Ouyang is popularly referred to as the number one standard script calligrapher of the Tang, though no "expert" would accept such a simplistic judgment as it stands of course. That said, Ouyang's sleek, elongated characters can Indeed be more readily appreciated then Yan's corpulent, vigorous style of writing. The more you study, however, the more you see understand why neither styles can be said to be "better" than the other aesthetically speaking. In terms of well-roundedness in the calligraphic arts, on the other hand, I think it would be hard to put anyone else (post-Wang, that is) in Yan's category.
