I got a Chinese sewing machine last week... if you've already seen one you know how bad they're crafted. I spent a few days doing what I do, timker, and this is what I came up with... hope you like it, God bless
Looks awesome, love the skeletonized look. I was polishing on mine today and thinking man I wouldnt mind just paying to get one tuned up out of the box. There is Definitely a market for it. Im on a leather patccher forum on Facebook and had no idea how popular these machines are. Thanks for sharing and giving out some ideas, great work!!
Thats sweet Thanks for sharing. I'm a retired millwright and I can't leave my patcher alone. These machines are perfect for a tinkerer. They should be avoided by anyone who thinks they are going to open the box and start sewing.
Best one I've seen. Had mine for years and took FOREVER to get it dialed in. I still only use it for "rough sewing" on leather or sewing that is not seen (clamped between two other pieces). I prefer to hand sew, but these make quick work of it...if they work. Beautiful custom piece there.
There’s a few companies out there that clean these up and dial them in and they are pretty popular. One that’s all cleaned up and dialed in goes for around $250 dollars. Great job man!! Looks excellent
Ooo that's nice. You somehow turned a Chinese knock off in to an heirloom piece. There's some stuff that comes out of China that cleans up nicely if you're willing to put the work in to them and you're a testament to that. Also that old bike you built is so good.

Nice result! But you don’t have to do all this hard work if you don’t want. Mine sewed right out of the box with very little effort. Mounted it on a length of 2 x 4, stuck that in the vice and used a stand alone thread stand. Twisted the walking foot armature to align the contact point with its cam and it sewed remarkably well. I’m keeping it in the garage so it always needs to be coated all over in oil, all parts will get that nasty black oil soiling, for me no point in hours of abrasion reassembly and tuning. It’s main advantage is the long arm so building a flat work plate takes from ability to access difficult locations (sleeves, boots). It’s awful to look at and awful to the touch, your hands will end up filthy but it’s incredibly effective and compact.

Hey Eddie, I have another mod you can do on your patcher. I do not know about you but the foot lift handle is on the wrong side of the machine and is a huge PITA. SO. remove te factory junk and drill the cast threads out of the patcher with a 1/4''' bit. get a 1/4'' all thread rod. stick 1/2'' down in your vice and bend it 90 degrees. run a nut on the rod to the bend BOTH SIDES. stick through the hole you drilled. run a 1/4 allthread coupling up to the machine, then bend that rod 90 degrees. slide a SS tube onto the rod and make a handle
You need to improve that bobbin winder. I also designed a much better knob for the crank. It is 3d printable. I have a video on it. I email the stl files if you want to 3d print it.

Looks like you are using very heavy thread. Someone else mentioned the needle cavity can be 'rounded' to accept heavy duty industrial needles. Did you do that?
From one tinkerer to another, that is awesome, as well as the other projects you built. I am in the process of rebuilding mine, as we speak. Was there any particular problem with painting the frame ?

Well, as a tinker myself I know what is in it ; I just bought a project property so time is short for replicating your great piece and I need something for leatherwork . What are you thinking $$$ for that beauty ?
