Nicely done, right down to the spill pads under the diesel tanks.

Best way to clean carbon like that is soak in a caustic soda solution, 1kg bag from B&Q added to a container of water would do the job nicely then rinse. Don't forget to wear gloves and eye protection.

Best use of EGR units ever............god knows they are a plague on actual diesel engines. 250C to 25C.......that is a very efficient heat exchanger.

Pretty sure cleaning then out so well with heat and an airline made them so effective!

I'm going to use some flexible dryer duct and put it around an extended exhaust (I already have both) and run a small DC fan at the bottom of the heater where the exhaust starts and split it off before it goes outside. I should be able to nearly double my heat output from 1 heater.

Very professional job, looks great! Have you considered pumping the heated water into a barrel or two to store the heat and radiate it back into the room slowly? I think you would get more consistent temps that way.

Thanks, not sure about the professional bit… 🤪 As for the water, That is a pissibolity, but for me, that would take up more space. This does just what I need, keep out condensation and ice build up. Another idea was to pump the warm air into a enclosure where I could dry wet work clothes…..

Hi Steve, great use of the EGR’s - I see you used two different types was there a reason or just what was available?? Also do you know the vehicle type they came from ?? , I also noticed that you have an afterburner ( I think they are amazing devices ( I have 3 at the moment (do you use the i/o module to switch the fans and pumps on temp rise))) finally do you have any problems with back pressure as it’s a long length with what looks like 20mm pipe on mine I use 1.7mtrs of 42mm ( and thats not a criticism as what you have achieved is brilliant!! ) looking at your setup the only thing I think I would change is on the joining of the ERG’s I would will use flanges so they can be opened up easily to clean the sort buildup - but we’ll done - you really deserve a pat on the back 😎

Thanks for the kind words. The large one is from a Subaru Forester Mk 3. There was little exact planning for joining the 2. I went for 2 as thats what I found 2 similar looking ones and thought would work best. Yes it would be easier to take apart and clean out, but compared to a 100000 mile subaru, i doubt it will soot up as bad. If I need yo, i can cut the join and re braise. The fan and pump come on via the orange wire when the heater comes on and off the same. No reason not to. Not noticed any back pressure issues yet. 🤷🏻‍♂️

One other thing, the exhaust is all 1”, and if you look at the intake hole. It is in fact 1/4 restricted! So the free glowing exhaust flows well…. So far. What kind of flanges do you speak of… not the kind of flanges Ive watched on the internet I presume….

I would love to know rather than using a heat exchanger to fans, how quick and hot it would heat a 10L water container

Very nice setup. I just installed a Chineater in a camper, or caravan as you Brits call them. I used a18" peice of 1 " Z tube, aluminum finned copper tubing to extract some of the EGH before it exits thru the floor to the muffler outside. It works like a charm , but captured perhaps 30% of I'm lucky, but it is a working experiment and it adds a little more efficiency. Your set up is real dandy. Where did you find the EGR units? I'd like to add something like with an insulated tank to heat water.

You actually want the air intake for the heater to be outside too because how you have it now where only the exhaust is outside is that you will get negative air pressure inside your workshop. That means cold air will seep in. You want it to be neutral.

Nah…. My whole thinking was heating while circulating in fresh air as I do work in there and fumes etc will trickle out via the combustion cycle. There is enough air trickling in through 6m of 1” vent gap in the roof and the shite wooden glazed door. Saves having the door open fir fresh & cold air. If I were heating the house or living space then yes, I agree. But my farts can be a bit much in the garage and they help combustion. Thanks for the thought tho…

I'm confused. You are capturing the heat from the exhaust pipe running it thru a rad than blowing it outside? I a missing something. It looks like the rad is mounted on an outside wall?

Around 5:30 you see it's mounted on an inside wall, inside. Although I think much more energy can be saved by replacing the roof 😁

Its a lean too shed. Heater inside heating the garage, exhaust and fans on outside wall in a storage shed. The exhaust from the garage heater was causing condensation and damp issues. Just using the exhaust heat to add a little warmth & dry moving air. While the cold gasses and condensate actually go outside.

It might be that if the air intake for the burner was routed outside then you wouldnt be drawing cold air into the workshop/ garage to replace the warm air its using at the moment.

I’m not sure there’d be an advantage due to the higher delta vs feeding it warm indoor air… Unless you fed it outside air that had been passed through a heat recovery exchanger inside, then you’d get positive pressure without feeding the heater cold air… Hmm.
