Great build. As the owner of an actual Singer 29k patcher I'm really surprised that one of those cheap copy machines will go thru leather that thick...the old Singer won't. I actually have a couple old treadle sewing machine heads form the turn of the century that will sew thicker leather than the 29k. I hope people realize that those big butterfly tabs on the needle head are to turn the direction of the presser foot...so you don't have to turn the item being stitched, a major advantage of the patchers. Now I want one of the machines like you've got to add to my collection. For those doing lots of heavy leather work, and with the capital...I fully recommend the Cowboy 3200 which I use for belts, holsters, and sheaths.
@stewartmarshall4112
@stewartmarshall4112 2 года назад
I made a 1/8 inch shorter foot on my Chinese patcher and it handles a full half inch stack of leather now. Needs a bigger needle to do that, due to the increased friction. I did the needle bar mod from the Facebook patcher group and now use 180/24 type S needles for 207 thread top and bottom. One thing I found when sewing this really thick stuff is the top thread needs tons of tension to pull the bottom thread up high enough into the leather, and to help this I also don't use the little tension spring in the bobbin carrier, for less lower thread tension. Of course a trade-off with bigger thread is that the bobbin holds less. But I make mostly small projects, heavy duty knife sheaths, holsters, similar stuff, so this is not an issue for me. To go up to a needle this big, I did have to file out the hole and groove in the arm a bit so the needle clears without touching when it descends.

WOW! Just...WOW! I just stumbled across your channel while researching these hand crank machines. That was amazing. Awesome job. I would argue, that setup is BETTER than those $2000-$3000 industrial leather sewing machines. If there is a malfunction it is easy to see, work on, tweak, etc. If those advanced computerized industrial machines need work, you basically need to bring it to a professional or go get an engineering degree to understand how they work.

Good Job! I hope you don't mind if I use a few of your ideas. I plan to use a gear reduction wheel chair motor and a Variac + a DC power supply. The machine is on order so it's just a matter of a bit of work. I won't need a belt or pulleys so the output of the wheelchair motor will hook directly to the back of the machine. Like yours, it will have plenty of power , geez, I can't wait! Thank You!

full on "made in Poland" level, truly amazing..my relative has a mid-'60s Janome sewing machine (japan...now china of course) that weighs 44 pounds !!! all mechanical stainless steel guts. She also has a new Brother that weighs 12 pounds. At the port of Seattle, foreign sources have been shipping in 'salted hides' (stacked in sheets) in 20 and 40 foot containers for decades. Probably brazil, maybe india, I dunno. But domestic sources of leather would be in the South. I would love to get some alligator hides and have that machine.

These machines are great, aren't they! I purchased 2. One to keep the other to fine-tune file down and sell. One has bearings in the arms and driveshaft. Had to hammer the arms to make it work but keeping for the bearings. Yes, your upgrade is the best out there one can find. The motor looks fine with the machine.. nothing like a guty motor. at around 100 I think I'll be getting a motor too! It would be nice to have the added parts self-standing, (the large pully fastened to separate bearings and slip in the shaft), so you could slip the machine away from the table easily for traveling. Very Cool Build was thinking the motor would be too large but at 15 Lbs very cool contraption you made from an aquarium stand! So glad I pumped in here.
