I think in order to be a parent you've got to go through some kinda test to prove that you can educate, guide and be warm to kids on a daily basis. There was a time in the West when we had even stronger family values than we do now, so it's weird to me that this kind of thing hasn't been implemented before.

It's so weird to not like kids ... choosing to not have kids or to choose to keep your distance as a preference, but flat out saying you don't like kids on the whole is weird. You were literally a kid at one point. It's so weird that grown adults feel comfortable saying they don't like children. Any other group eg the elderly, disabled, different racial backgrounds, men* woman... If you say you don't like them and you get judged harshly as a bigot...but kids? Firstly, abortion in China is widespread, as is condoms and Plan B, and easy to access (pill is heavily disliked; due to issues with quality management, there is a widespread fear that the pill will make you infertile). There is no stigma about it, although Buddhist beliefs in China state the ghost of the baby will hang about you, so no one is exactly proud of it nor discloses it. But this means there are not a lot of unwanted kids. Secondly, with 4 grandparents, and two parents, as well as the grandparents often having 6-7 siblings each, and they in turn have kids, I would estimate that 99% of kids can find a single family member to take them in. As far as parents taking care of their kids even as adults, what often happens is the parents hold that over their kids heads and constantly guilt them into doing things for them and not letting them live their own lives.

I’ve lived in western countries and Asian countries… been teaching Chinese kids for over a decade. I have NEVER come across kids more valued with parents that are more invested in their children than Chinese parents. Sure, American soccer moms will drive their kids around to their different activities but over there it’s on a WHOLE other level of dedication. Their entire lives are often centered around their children. Also, in Asia in general, family and family culture is hands down much much much closer and intwined in comparison to the West… this is a well-known difference.
