Your "What" example actually happened in a professional football match. There was a player, Sanchez Watt who committed a foul. The referee went to book him and asked him his name and he replied "Watt". The Ref asked him his named again, and he replied "Watt". So the ref thought he was being deliberately difficult, booked him again and sent him off! His team captain came over and explained to the ref, so the booking was rescinded but it made quite a few people laugh when the story broke!

My Chinese name is 王九月 my Chinese friend helped me choose it due to my English name sounding similar (JoElle). I am aware 九月 is September but I like it. Some have said it’s weird but others have said they really like it (I don’t know if they were just trying to be polite though?). What are your thoughts on this name?

I’m native Chinese. I think it’s really a cool name. Words of months are not common names among native people, but people like you who are from other countries often choose uncommon and ingenious names. 王九月 is not weird at all. is 林 辉优 good? My Japanese students gave me the name 輝優 (pronounced Kiyasa), I'd like to use the same/simplified Chinese characters in my Chinese name if it sounds ok. I chose 林 as a surname because Chinese surnames are almost always one character but that isn't common in Japanese surnames and Hayashi林 is one of the few common single-character surnames in Japan. This way I can use the same name with different pronunciations in both China and Japan. If that makes sense. So does it sound ok?
@ChinesewithJessie
@ChinesewithJessie 3 года назад
Hi Katharine, I think it's a good name in general. 林 is a common Chinese surname, it means "forest" and it consists of two 木 which means “wood”, so sometimes people would use this character in their names if they lack "wood" (in Five Elements, which is explained in another video of mine, you can find more info about Chinese names here too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kVCdABuke6U.html) Both 辉(brilliance/brightness) and 优(superior/excellent) have good meanings. The only concern people might have if they're getting this name for a girl is that 辉 in a name is supposed to be masculine, rarely heard in girls' names, not a big deal though, just thought you might want to know. In terms of its pronunciation, it instantly reminds me of a famous Chinese architect/poet/writer 林徽因 (AKA Phyllis Lin or Lin Whei-yin when in the United States). Anyways, personally I like this name and I hope all this helps.

@@ChinesewithJessie Thanks so much for getting back to me, this is great news! Usually, I would change it if it sounds a bit masculine but since it's a very precious name given to me by my students I think I'll keep it since it's not too weird lol. Thank you for your help!

I would like to check with people here, as I've been using 王沐宸 as a male Chinese name for some time, but have never got this checked by anyone else. Can anyone confirm whether this is a good name or not? My understanding is that, particularly for older Chinese names, two characters used to be the norm. I am considering whether maybe I should go with a name like 王敏 instead on that basis.

both daemon and 守护进程 refer to processes, like in linux, for example systemd is an example of a daemon. At least colloquially I've never seen daemon used otherwise. My name is rather difficult to get a good translation comparison of. My last name means to cushion - so I chose 戴 (Dài: The surname has its origin from a word which means, “to support.”) My first name, however, means pearl, but can also be used in other languages to mean daisy. So, I picked 花 (Huā: Meaning "flower, blossom") 戴花. Though, when I put that in Google translate, it translates to wear flowers. -laughs- I did, briefly, consider the name 凰, instead of 花. 凰 (Huáng: Meaning "phoenix"). The reason I'd considered 凰 is because the phoenix is one of my favorite mythical creatures. That is, also, the reason I think it might not be a good idea to use it.

Hi Jherek, 杰里科is simplified Chinese, 傑利可 is traditional Chinese, they are not exactly the same characters though, sometimes translations would vary in mainland China and HK/Macau/Taiwan. I live in mainland China, and we use simplified Chinese here.Your name in Chinese is translated by the way it sounds so I don't think it should be interpreted in the same way. For example, my English name is Jessie, there is an origin behind it in English, but if I say my name in English is Yuan, then there's no way English-speakers can tell me what it means. Katie Cummins Hi Katie, what is the meaning of your English name though? Coz 清梅 are two separate characters rather than a compound word, 梅 is a kind of Chinese plant/flower and could also be a surname, while 清has around 7 meanings. @ChinesewithJessie
@ChinesewithJessie 4 года назад
Katie Cummins Ah I see, I think the character 纯(chún) is closer to what you're looking for than 清, and the reason why the name sounds old-fashioned is because flowers like 梅/莲/荷 are commonly used names among our older generations but not that popular now. Also Chinese names are often 2-4 characters (including the surname), so you don't have to find another character but you can if there's anything else you like 😉 Hope that helps 😘

Also my last name is Niner (pronounced Nine-R) so would it just be easier to have my last name in Chinese as 九 or maybe something that sounds similar like 尼纳? Or is everything I’m writing just jibberish?
@ChinesewithJessie
@ChinesewithJessie 3 года назад
Hi Allie, names like 亚历山德拉 are transliterated names which means they are just random Chinese characters put together to make it sound like your English name, they don't have other meanings. 艾莉 is supposed to be like that too but it happens to look like a Chinese name because: 1. 艾 is a real Chinese surname. 2. Most Chinese names are 2-3 characters as you know. 3. 莉 is commonly used for female Chinese names. It's a kind of herbal plant (mostly seen as jasmine in 茉莉), it also has good implied meaning - things go smoothly everywhere. This comes from the structure of the character, the 艹 above refers to four sides, 利 as in 顺利(things go smoothly). *Imagine when you explain your Chinese name like this to your friends instead of saying "coz it sounds like my English name" :) * I have never heard of 九 as a surname but I just looked it up, although really rare, it is a surname indeed lol. But still sound a bit off to me. 尼纳 sounds more like Nina I think? Maybe change it to 倪娜 if you're gonna use it. Same pronunciation, but different words. As for 阿里, I would prefer 艾莉 if you just want it to sound like Allie. Okay, hope this helps, and let me know if you got any other questions. ❤️

do NOT call yourself Lei Feng! I would also never suggest calling me or anyone else Caocao. Li Bai sounds kinda pretentious unless you are already a poet laureate which you are not. those are all heavy historical names with a lot of history which you are probably ignorant of. Would you walk around calling yourself "William T Sherman" or "Lord Protector"? Of course not! Great lesson!

@mortarion4555
@mortarion4555 3 года назад
妙兰 means beautiful orchid. The thing is names comparing girl to beautiful flower is an old trend in China. These names were very popular decades ago, but now Chinese parents usually avoid using them, it could sound like an old lady's name or someone came from a humble background. But since you are a foreigner, for the locals, you are already cool, they might think you are a down to earth person and you chose this very old school Chinese name on purpose.🤣🤣🤣

@mortarion4555
@mortarion4555 3 года назад
@@johnnyzhao7698 It is kind of weird tbh. The character 恨 means hatred or regret, it's too negative to use in a real name. Maybe in a wuxia novel this could be a character's name, for example a mother want her son to avenge his father's death or something like that. Wuxia novels can be very dramatic and over the top, but irl... nah, no one named their son 'hatred'. You can use 恒 instead, which means eternity or perseverance.

is 王碧玉 a good name ?
@ChinesewithJessie
@ChinesewithJessie 4 года назад
mal jjj44 Hmm I'd say it has good meanings, it means jasper and there's also a Chinese idiom called 小家碧玉, which (in ancient times) refers to girls who are not from prominent families but still turn out good. Shy and kind might be people's impression for that name. But it also sounds like a rather old-fashioned name, like modern parents probably won't get their kids that name anymore. Up to you though, see if that fits you. Hope this helps. 😊
