@@MeganJacques I learned the HK style during the pandemic.. so play a lot during those times. There are many other styles like taiwan, fuzhou, etc, each with similar but modified set of rules.. The real enjoyment comes when you start trying to build your hand and also using your wits vs the others 3 players to figure out what they might need so you don't throw that certain tile out else you have to pay, or you maneuver around situations to build a different hand based on what is out there on the expose piles. So it's battle of the wits and memory because expert players can recall what you threw out in sequence or in general so they calculate what you might not need and throw those out so they won't lose to you. Once a new player 'gets' how to really play, then it becomes quite enjoyable. My parents knows how to play and one of my aunt won 1st place in HK mahjong tournament in Hong Kong couple years ago. A few of my aunts are all very good players and good players really do win often because HK mahjong really require more skills than say fuzhou mahjong which is 50 luck/50 skill. I mean it's not for everyone because I know some doesn't like to play it probably might be because they haven't reach that enjoyment level... or it can be genetics because all my maternal side loves mahjong. lol
