As a Chinese, I remember absolutely laughing my ass off at Adrien’s mandarin, I literally had no clue what he was saying 😂

I liked that this cartoon had a main character of mixed race. It's not a main focus of the show, but it was refreshing to have my kids watch a show set in France but from a multicultural perspective. Ladybug trying to learn mandarin is probably a bit of an exoloration of the multicultural/mums heritage theme, so maybe any shortcomings are intentional? Edit: shortcomings in the chinese characters speech is less likely to be intentional I guess 😂 🤔 unless he's a bad guy and in the story he's faking being chinese!😂😂

That was so fun! I did find it odd that you seemed to skip a tiny part. You seemed surprised he answered in English. See, when the boy asks if it's his first time in Paris and the man said he's been to Paris 30 years ago, and he says your Chinese is good, you skipped ahead after that but right after that he says in English "your Chinese very good, not like my english." And the boy says "I thought you couldn't speak English" and the man says "my English very bad." So he can speak a little bit of English, but not much, so he was ok to tell the name of his dish. But yeah, great video.

Paris is indeed pronounced in a manner more similar to how you said it, when you hear it from French speakers. When you mentioned knowing what it's like to use a similar app to study English, all of a sudden, with your name being what it is, I was reminded of my cool housemate Jessica (she was Taiwanese) from 26 years ago, in London. She was using this small speaking dictionary that she carried everywhere and she kept repeating whatever it was saying in English... it was a struggle... Given the translation "mistakes" you mentioned, my guess is that they used automated translation to reduce the costs. Automated translation is never a good idea for film dialogues or literature. Human translators would have done a better job. Automated translation works best on technical content... Thank you for all the language tips!🙂

I would love to see you react to the Miraculous Shanghai special as well! There’s lots of Chinese in that one and they actually hired Chinese actors for the Chinese characters

I had to look it up since you got me curious, the Kindle version of the Japanese translation of Animal Farm says it has 253 pages, so you weren't far off! xD

Chinese documents are always briefer because syllables not letters. Basically a word in Chinese is usually just 2 characters or even just 1, whereas in English words are on avg. around 5-7 characters. I don't think the sentences when broken down are so much shorter as it is a matter of the characters. Great video!

I hope people don't get too discouraged with apps rating their speaking skills, it's a complex thing to assess and the algorithms usually aren't very reliable. And that's before you get into the huge range of accents out there! That's why a lot of them err on the side of "hey good job" even when you know you flubbed it

No joke though I have been learning Japanese for 10 years and still I feel like the sentences can be painfully long. It's no wonder then, that often in informal settings Japanese people answer with a single word haha, they're over it!

6:04 Just search for how many pages Animal Farm Japanese Version has. It's 280 pages😂 Japanese is longer but it can express emotions very detailedly sometimes. That's why it is one of my favorite languages.

0:24 It's normal. China copied the European architecture. In China, there's literally copies of famous cities like Paris, Landon, etc. They just wanted to copy the already known architecture of Europe. China took "inspiration" of Paris. Not the other way around.

Adrien does mean Paris since that is where the show was made and takes place in, the show was originally in French.

Given this episode was in the first season, they didn’t have the funds to hire a real Mandarine speaker, let alone felt it was very needed since it would only be used for one episode, so they cut costs by using an auto translator. Thankfully they made a lot more effort in the Shanghai movie.

I think, the people here forget that Asia people are polite. Mean they talk to you that you talk good but do you ge five from six as bad number. I known it self from my Thai friends. My thai is very bad if I ask other people... Also the google translator can't translate it... 😊 Inside the story Adrian (as french person) learn Chinese (not talk what Chinese language exactly) since he was six for nine hours daily. Later her (girl)friend is a Chinese girl how know same sports he know too. Possible Adrian speak and hear in a french accent - typical for European people. I self have problem with sound-language e.g. Thai, Chinese, aso. Exact they want to show it. I not known why they put "chinese" and not another better asian language e.g. thai in this serie. French self is not easy in opposite to my German language for me or other German viewer of this serie. 😊

I don't know if it helps but the blond boy is 14 and he isn't speaking his native language. The English voice actor is American but he is famous for his work in many animes. Also you are correct, the show is set in Paris. The show originally airs in French and is then translated to English to air here in the States. The character is known to skip the classes though because of his strict father forcing him to learn it along with fencing, piano, and karate along with going to school.

I haven't studied Mandarin in years (since high school), but would explain why some of the sentences make no sense to me. You make it easier for me to understand what was being said. Like I'd assumed Marinette would have said" Wo shi Marinette" as that's how I learned to introduce. Literally translating to "I am Marinette" if I remember right. I guess the translators just copied/pasted the text in a translator. XD

Fun fact: In the Mandarin version of this episode, Adrien speaks Cantonese.

it seems that they used Chinese american translators that have english as their primary language and Mandarin as a second language and though they are fluent, their grammar is slightly off. Just my two cents
