Slicks is a 1992 game by Codemasters probably inspired by Micro Machines (not the other way around as I say in the review). For just £3.99 you get a top down racer by Ash and Dave that is a lot of fun and betters many full price racing games.
ChinnyVision looks at the game on real hardware. Namely a C64, the only system the game was released on.

I absolutely love Slicks. Once you get used to the controls and can do the circuits cleanly, the speed element is really well done - especially when you upgrade each car and end up with the McLaren (reflecting real life F1 at the time where they and the Williams were the best cars) - then it becomes a lot easier, but you have to work hard to get there. Being able to do multiple seasons and keep the same car from the end of the previous season is a neat touch - means you can gradually work your way to an eventual world title. The six circuits are mostly reminiscent of the ones raced in F1 at the time - certainly Phoenix, Monaco and Monza (in the first load) and Silverstone and Paul Ricard (Le Castellet) in the second load. Jacarapegua (Rio de Janeiro, final one in the second load) last hosted F1 in 1989 and moved to Interlagos after that. Most of the circuits are fairly representative too. Ash and Dave did some quality budget releases (see also Gaplus) but for me this is their finest hour.

For those of us who still had a C64 at the end of 1992, this was quite a nice release. Ash and Dave were very good coders and the whole thing felt polished in a way other games at the time didn't.

When you look at autoracing on the intellivision you don't necesseraly view it as the predecessor of micromachine. But when you see rally speedway (1983) which is like its adaptation on the C64 it really makes sense.

I haven't played the game but for 3.99 pounds that would be an absolute no brainer. The game is ... slick looking, smooth and seems to have precise enough controls, for the era that's pretty nice even if it's quite simplistic in terms of gameplay and game modes. I personally prefer games with a bit more emphasis on driving controls and intertia/drift like Super Cars but I understand the appeal. Thanks for the review Chinny!

Great video! There was a Speccy version written - YS reviewed it as part of a compilation but it's lost. I know a CPC version was considered but no idea if it was written.
@zawtowers

That's right - the compilation was Super Sports Challenge. The C64 version of that compilation was the only way to get 1st Division Manager and Cue Boy. The Spectrum version would have had Slicks but never saw the light of day sadly.

Would love to see a push scrolling CPC version. You know its almost worth looking through skips for a freecycle c64 mini to play this on. It looks 👌 that good.

Strangely enough, Micro Machines for the NES came earlier than Slicks for the Commodore 64. I'd have sworn it was the other way around.

we had some good top down racers on the c64.. this one probably the best (i quite liked Carnage)

It's really enjoyable, I played the demo version (with the Monaco track) from Commodore Format a lot before I got hold of the full game. Micro Machines had appeared on the NES first, and so Slicks was inspired by the two-player mode from that rather than the other way around.

I think I remember in Commodore Format at the time that this is what the c64 conversion of Micro Machines turned in to. I'll go see if I can find out if that's true.

I'd moved onto the ST when this was released, shame, looks impressive. Don't think the difficulty would of put me off as a youngster , poured hours into The Last V8 and Red Max.

Some people are put off by the uncompromising difficulty level. One crash and you're out. But I think it's a brilliant game. It's really rewarding if you're willing to put some practice in. It's easily my favourite Codemasters game on the C64.
@chinnyvision

The one crash and you are our seems fair enough but some of the insta death tyre wall placement seems unfair.

I'm trying to think of a Commodore 64 top down view racer that you can drift on corners. I've played it, it's a good game just can not remember the game title. Something to look into chinny for some more content. Slicks is a nicely designed game for the C64. I recommend it.

8:46 - "No Amstrad or C64 version - no ST or Amiga version either." So what version are we watching then?! 😉 As for _Slicks_ going for silly money - [checks eBay...] it seems to sell for between £10-15. That's a fair bit more than your average 8-bit budget game, but it's not what I would call "silly money".
@chinnyvision
@chinnyvision 7 месяцев назад
Seems to fluctuate as when I was trying to get hold of a copy a few years back it was a bit more than that and anything above 15 quid for a budget game is silly money for me.
