Chevy Chase is a 1991 budget racing game from Hi-Tec released on the Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC and has nothing to do with, er, Chevy Chase.
Race across America for some reason or other, powering up your car as you go. Original racing games on budget in the late 8 bit era are rare so how does this one stack up?
ChinnyVision checks out the game on original hardware.

Strange grey edge on the car for the Amstrad version is in mode 0 a byte is used for two pixels, and it will quicker to just draw the car than try to make it have transparent edges merging with the background. They've probably just put a grey pixel there as most of the time that bit of the car is on the road. It's running at a decent speed on the CPC for a change, so that's probably a good call.

Enjoyed the Amstrad version. Lovely graphics at the time

Enjoyed the video. Not a game I had come across before and it looks very playable on all the systems, with fluid graphics and an impression of speed, which some other titles around the same period lack.

Clearly that is a snake invasion occurring on that C64 level.

The C64 engine will likely be using raster interrupts to set the background colour timed such as to create the striping effect used to create the illusion of movement whereas the Spectrum and Amstrad will be rendering the stripes properly. This is why the crappy sea effect on the C64 - they can't turn off the striping for only half the width of the screen.

Yup, this is a most sensible explanation. And on that note, it is a bit sad they are not using raster interrupts as well on the CPC to render the stripes since the machine was perfectly capable of doing it. Rendering them by drawing is quite wasteful. That CPC version would run even smoother had they used color splits for the sprites.

I remember the demo of this on Your Sinclair. I don't think I understood the Chevy Chase references in the magazine at the time. I can't say that I wanted to find the full version afterwards

I don't remember seeing any reviews of this, just the name in a list of a mail-order company. It's better than Crazy Cars but it looks like it gets very boring - even with the "power-ups". That section on the C64 looks like corruption. The large sprite of the Spectrum version is quite impressive, and the Amstrad version is moving at a decent speed. I suppose it's not bad for a budget price.

C64 Brown is the brownest brown and so is C64 Red. #FACT

I quite liked this when I first got it on the Speccy but as you say, it’s lacking in gameplay. It’s a shame that the author didn’t work on some full price games with a longer development time.

Had this on the Amstrad. Looks lovely but was just too hard. I never got very far in it at all

The game looks a bit dull but that C64 version is hugely impressive. Imagine paying £3 for that then looking askance at the copies of Cisco Heat and Chase HQ you paid full price for.

They certainly got a half decent racing engine running on the 64 which is more than most games did!

Yup, and it is a shame it did not occur to them to license it. That would have improved a lot of games and would have brought them quite a bit of cash which they apparently needed since they went bust thereafter.

I'd of been happy with that back in the day on the c64 for 3 quid Amstrad version looks very nice too Speccy one again lovely detailed cars , nice use of the colour on the car

It would be good to hack the c64 version to use paddles and to make the collision of the car a bit thinner. Smooth graphics otherwise.

I had this on the CPC back in the day and I think it's still the pick of the bunch. It's colourful and responsive, just as a CPC game should be. C64 colours always seem a bit washed out to me.

why did they make the road so narrow and the cars so big?

An OK budget game... just OK. What's with the buzzing on the Spectrum version when there's no sound?

I think that's the engine noise. 😂

Nice game but a bit boring after awhile. Goes to show the c64 is quite capable of doing playable racing games, so there's no excuse for titles like super hang on to be as rubbish as it was. But you can't fault this game too much for a budget title.
