A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
A member of my Patreon community was selling his MEGAfm by Twisted-Electrons, and I really had to try it out for myself. I get why he was selling it: the MEGAfm is a noisy, dirty synth that makes a certain set of sounds, and they either work for you or they don't. It's made of two of the same chips that were installed in the Sega Genesis, and as such has an alternate-reality-where-chiptune-was-FM feeling to it. While FM doesn't make a lot of sense to me, the MEGAfm's panel mode and extensive knobs and faders made it easy to design sounds in a very different architecture than I'm used to. I'm not sure I could use the MEGAfm for that much of my music, but it is undeniably full of character and unique from the other FM offerings out there.
To play the MEGAfm, I used my trusty Arturia Keystep. And to give it some space and movement, I ran the MEGAfm into the Meris Polymoon, which adds space, dimension, and feeling to basically everything it touches. I love its contribution here.
I ended up writing a piece on the Keystep and realized I was going to need some accompaniment. I tried a couple other things first, but then realized the Elektron Syntakt would be the perfect fit. Like the MEGAfm, the Syntakt can get grimy and chiptune-adjacent, as well as having some really nice warmth from its analog engines. And with some tweaking to step resolutions and pattern chaining, I quickly made a song arrangement even though the Syntakt doesn't have a formal arranger. Of the three small black boxes from Elektron, I think the Syntakt might be my favourite.
Performed and recorded live to two stereo tracks (Syntakt and output from Polymoon), with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

For not clicking with the sound, you sent it into the stratosphere. There is something magical in these old ym2612 chips.

I love how the Polymoon, like you said, takes that crisp FM patch and dissolves it into grains that blow off on a breeze

Gorgeous! Everything was in its right place with a very clever use of each instrument (rich noisy & glassy FM textures, mellow bass & pads, hybrid percussions etc. 🤩)

Imagining a young man slinking through the dark alleys of a massive cyber punk city. He hides something under his jacket and then a pair of robots with “police” written on their torsos peak into the the alley. They yell “there he is! Get him!”. The chase ensues and the kid has to run for his life. The robots almost catch him, there’s a drone involved but eventually he gets away. He makes it to the top of a massive building and the neon lights of the city shine through the smog of the city and produce a warm orange and blue glow. He reaches inside of his jackets and pulls out a single rose. The last one on the planet. He lifts it up to eye level and whispers “I wish we could have done better”. Then he lets it go and the wind carries it quietly away.

Inspiring as always. Question for you -- a piece like this one, start-to-recording, approximately how long does it take you? Pure curiosity.
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 2 года назад
Thanks, Stu! First night, I sat down with the MEGAfm and played with the sounds, no goals, just exploring, until I found a sound I liked and a few chords that fit it. Second night I had more of a song idea in mind, set up some gear to accompany, realized it didn't work, so didn't spend much time on it. Third day I set up the Syntakt and sequenced it beginning to end based on the MEGAfm part. Fourth day I recorded it on the second or third take, I think. I was unwittingly practicing it as I arranged the song so it didn't take long once I had arranged the Syntakt parts. Does that help?
@stujay
@stujay 2 года назад
@@JayHosking Sure does, thank you. Impressive that you could put it together so quickly, but also gives me encouragement that you didn't just say "Oh, this old thing? A couple hours." ;)
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 2 года назад
@@stujay It definitely takes a bunch of work. Some jams come together really quickly, and some take ages. The challenge is in knowing what needs to be done, in many cases. All the best!

I do not know ....how you DO it ..keep that Sega chip Beast under control!? ... i ended up getting an OpSix , in despair over the MEGAfm's volatility, but i since has learned to love it , well, it helped ALOT , when i got it set up to work with my Seaboard Rise , i really dont get why MPE hasn't burned some more barnes !? Have you ever considered a Linnstrument , a Haken strip, or a Seaboard (i LUW the Seaboard ! - its so far away from the other crap , that broke ROLI !) Theres also the Keith MacMillen boards,- ?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 2 года назад
The MEGAfm really is volatile. I simply started with a single sine wave and added slowly, but you're right that it gets unwieldy very fast. Tried the Continuumini and it felt cool but ultimately the one I'd bought wasn't working 100% correctly, so I had to return it. Still, I think my favourite expressive controller has been the Hydrasynth's keybed, so I may give it another shot one day.

loved it! I have a question though: for the keystep part you are playing, how long does it take you to commit something like that to memory? or is it partially improv? I feel like I can write stuff fine but when it comes to remembering anything let alone several minutes it takes far more work to seer it into my brain. did you have to do a lot of practice runs? trying to understand the workflow. thank you!
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 2 года назад
Hey, thanks! And fair question. Up until last year, this would have probably been impossible to do live, but I got a piano and spend quite a bit of my day playing it in the margins. This has made parts like this easier. As such, I played the Keystep part quite a bit while sequencing and arranging the Syntakt part, but by the time the Syntakt was ready, I was ready to record the whole thing. All the best!

For pattern chaining, you just select a pattern, then, while holding that pattern down, press a bunch of other patterns. Works pretty well!

@JayHosking

The pattern chaining works for most of my applications, but it's helpful to set up longer sequences using slow step resolutions for some tracks like bass or chords. Best of luck, and thanks!
