I didn't even know what Chip Seal was until recently when they decided to rough up the roads around me and put down tar/asphalt and chips in my area versus removing a couple MM or factions of an inch of road surface to resurface the road. Several years later the chip seal in my area is already wearing out in area's with heavy turning like around some intersections and the cul-de-sac up the road from me that surves a 10 story apartment building.
Does anyone know are they superposed to level the county roads before they tar and chip it? where i live they are just putting it on top of extremely ruff surfaces
Nah they literally had sign say don’t park seal coating. Then I see chip seal. It’s so thick in certain areas. Is that just how it is? Mores better than less. If a car swerves due to too much rock on the road it’s they problem right
Don't forget to mention the thousands of dollars a year you pay private contractors to haul your chip seal rock from one point to the next. Take note the annual budget the county receives and compare that to the amount of "work" they do. Also achd could complete the chip sealing process in one fluid movement yet they leave the rock on the road for weeks at a time so that a majority of the rock gets pushed off onto the side of the road.
Despise this surface!! Very dangerous for motorcycles!! Constantly has loose rock that makes it very easy for tires to slide out from under the rider. Not to mention the groves that get created be vehicles, making for uneven lanes! All it is is a temporary, cheap patch up!!!
If ya know how to do the process the right way, you wouldn’t have any chipped paint or windshields. I do tar and chip on a daily basis for a living. As a matter of fact I’m the main guy for laying chip at my job. And I can lay the stone at the right volume that once it’s rolled stones don’t blow off. Just saying
Very dumb question: is there such a process for driveway cracking with new overlay that is not "black" blacktop? Are tints and colors available which can make the look like standard concrete?
Yes, you can do a tar/chip surface over your paved driveway……but there are only two options for the surface finish, either the natural color of the crushed limestone they lay over the tar (grey-white to grey-tan), or if you do a “fog coat” / top layer of tar over the aggregate, it’ll be either a very very dark brownish color or black depending on the product used. They can’t add dyes to the tar because it is naturally black and it’s nearly impossible to cost effectively dye a black liquid light enough with white pigment to start adding other pigments to make colors people might want. You could theoretically have a company like Sherwin Williams mix you up a custom color of traffic marking paint using their white high-wear resistant traffic marking paint as a base and adding pigment if you wanted and proceed to paint your whole chip sealed driveway with that as long as you do the top fog coat and wait until it’s fully cured. If you use anything but a very dark color though the rubber on your car’s tires is going to end up making marks in the surface and you’re likely going to be disappointed with the result for the amount of money you’d spend on the paint and time you’d spend painting. The only real option for a custom colored / patterned driveway they’ll last is going to be colorized concrete. If you do the grade work and build the forms yourself and either get a contractor for the screeding and finish work or rent the equipment to do it yourself you can save a lot of money on going the concrete route, otherwise black is about your only feasible choice.
My county puts down crushed slag. Smells really bad, probably a carcinogen. Doesn’t last two seasons, either. Just gives the workers something to do and the county commissioners can show they’ve spent money. Stop-gap measure to say the least.
What a crock of shit ya chip sealing is cheaper doesn’t last near as long as asphalt just maintain asphalt and it lasts chipseal was designed for crack filling years ago I love the woman reading off the q cards lol
