it's very fortunate that the man in the leather jacket was there pointing to inferno belching dense black smoke because the firefighter were struggling to find it !!!!
To be fair, the man in the black leather jacket giving directions to the fire engine was John - the owner of the chip shop, and was doing that in sheer frustration and God knows what else while watching his livelihood burn to the ground.
@@LBfan0685 I suspected that would be the owner given his reactions. Poor fella, hopefully he managed to reopen or at least financially recover his losses. Such a traumatic and e,option experience I’m sure.
Why wasn't it rebuilt? I notice on Google streetview the freehold was for sale in 2011. Presumably the chip shop operator was a tenant. Did the freeholder not have insurance for a rebuild?
I was on holiday back in August of this year staying in Rhosniegr and every time I go past I always remember this video. Such a shame to see it gone still 5 years on
This government has so much to answer for. For austerity cuts read 'don't give a flying f##k'. As as retired firefighter it is so depressing to see the finest fire service in the world reduced to less than that of some third world countries.
yet this government can afford to keep sending aid abroad absolute joke austerity cuts should begin with foreign aid not important services here in the uk
If it helps at all, we have the same BS here in the good 'ol USA. The penny pinchers don't give a flying F for those of us that pay THEIR salaries, you see, as long as they get their money. It is a sad and to me criminal state of affairs.
Thankfully kevin they where okay!! 20 minutes is disgusting to a fire that could have had people trapped! that is not a criticism of the firefighters but the system.
+Kevin Ynys Mon Same ... I just saw the video and was like "Damn, either nobody called 911 (or 999 I think it is for you folks), or the FFs took a long time to get there." That really sucks, they are lucky that nobody was seriously injured, as cost cutting measures fairly often lead to deaths and accidents in systems like these. (Mostly safety ... but it's the same for engineering, and any safety oriented systems, or where there is a danger that a failure could cause an explosion, or the like...)
That fish and chip shop was John's life. So sad it's gone as the fish and chips were really lovely. I really hope that it's not the end and that it re-opens again someday. :/
To put the record straight. The fact that the local fire station did not turn out has nothing to do with Budget cuts. Llangefni fire station is a retained station which relies on part time fireman responding to the station to man the appliance when there is a fire call. The fact that the station did not turn out is down to the simple fact that there were not enough crew available to man the appliance. If more people from the local community in Llangefni who would be available during the day were to join the service as retained fire fighters, the appliance would be available to turn out 24 hours a day. This a common problem through out the country which would be addressed overnight if more people were prepared to serve their community by joining the Fire Service as retained Fire Fighters. As a retired Fire Officer I have first hand experience of the problem.
+bikesail1 We obviously value your obvious knowledge into matters like this, but the point I'm wondering is why on earth is Llangefni Fire Station not PERMANENTLY manned? I'm sure the answer will be cost - which would boil down to austerity. Many retained firemen simply are too far at their workplace and/or are refused leave by their employers (despicable IMHO, but that's another story...) Llangefni itself is quite large (admittedly not as large as Holyhead, but still), it has car repair garages, tyre depots, shops, hairdressers/barbers (they likely have flammable liquids and sprays), 3 schools (4 technically, but 2 share the same site), council offices, an industrial estate of reasonably large size, let alone the houses, let alone again the neighbouring areas (Rhosmeirch, Llangristiolus, Gaerwen/Holland Arms, Bodffordd, Llynfaes, to list a few). A fire in any one of those listed above could be horrendous. Having a permanent manned station IMHO is essential. BTW, "not enough crew"? Surely you aren't suggesting there were some personnel in the station at the time?... Of course, kudos to all fire personnel past and present, as they risk their lives to save others - it's the system that makes me shudder.
Kacey Anders there might have been some crew at the station by chance but if not enough firefighters are signed on duty at the time then fire control will not activate their pagers/call them out as there is not enough crew to man the appliance. So they wouldn't have known there was a fire. Even if they had known they wouldn't have been able to respond without a full crew.
When I was a leading fireman I served on a day manning station in a town with a population of more than 30,000 people, our fire ground also included a large rural area. Our second appliance was a retained pump, it was the norm for it not to be available between 0700 and 1800 Monday to Friday even though there were some crew available, not enough however to make up a full crew to enable the appliance to turn out. During those times our back up appliance normally took between 15 and 20 minutes to reach us. and of course if they had to respond onto our fire ground because we were out, they would have taken that long to reach any incident.
1) The chip shop was not far (as the crow flies) from the fire station - they'd have seen and smelt the smoke! 2) That's ludicrous - surely if there's a fire in the town, their pagers would be activated (and as in point 1 above, they'd see and smelt the smoke!). Could they not have been sent out to at least just try to contain the fire until a full crew arrived, rather than let it go unchecked for 20 minutes and got to the point where it took 5 appliances (and crew) to extinguish it
Plenty of ppl saying 20 mins is a terrible response time. Yes a full time station would be faster. But retained stations have better response times then that. Probably find it’s lack of crew to man the appliance, so if you wanna help be a retained a firefighter.
The fire engine probably came from Alloa, meaning it would take longer to get there. Although I'm not sure when the fire station in Alloa opened, so on that note it could have been closer or it could have been further away.
OMG I give these guys so much credit. They are fighting raging infernos with basically a garden hose. I know water supply in a lot of these countries is horrible. I visited fire stations while I was overseas and they had old American pumpers that had been donated sitting out front collecting dust and they said they can't use them because there wasn't enough pressure for the pumps . That line they were pulling is maybe half the size of a booster line we use only for brush/car fires. Keep up the great work!
Lol you make it sound as if we’re a third world country here in the UK. We’ve actually got one of the best water systems/supplies in the world. Don’t let this video alone be a factor in your opinion on whether we have a good water supply or not.
@@howardstephens5003 And you need a water supply from a hydrant before or shortly after starting to use it as without your tank will empty in 3 minutes.
Kevin Ynys Mon thank-you for the quick reply. Im only ever that way for the vintage Valley now. I wish they would re open the Amlwch line then I would properly visit Llangefni more - for a day trip (s) . I remember it had a good market.
AH HA! Now I see! (Notes) " Fire crews took 20 mins to reach the scene because Llangefni fire station which was 2 mins away was unmanned due to austerity cuts." Get the HELL out of the Private Sector!
GG central To be fair, the guy at 1.18 is the owner of the chip shop, and is doing that out of sheer desperation at seeing the fire engine stopping instead of coming straight down.
As a city, township, county or state, etc. you will get the amount of protection and security which you pay for in assessed property taxes and this is the result of paying minimal property taxes !!! Don't blame the government, its the property and business owners who demand low taxes which puts a financial strain on your local government's coffers. Low assessment property taxes equate to far less than optimal fire protection as well as that of other services which are normally provided by your local government entity. As to the responding fire company which was videoed in this particular emergency, I would be my opinion, that if they reacted in the same manner as they are trained to act in such a situation, then the FD needs to reevaluate their training procedures and techniques as well as to begin teaching fire science and behavior to the command officers.
It's central governments massive funding cuts to local government that is the reason. Nothing to do with local businesses who have already increased payment in local taxes to help pay for funding cuts to police, fire services, social care, etc. Business properties are standing empty in the uk because it isnt financially viable to rent properties. I suggest you comment on something you know about.
@@serpicko8255, Thank you for your impute. I was wrongly applying the United States reasons for the lack of local funds as being the same in the United Kingdom. I stand corrected. That is, I stand corrected if the central government is loaded with funds in its treasury from collected taxes, but irresponsibly refuses distribute those funds to local governments without appropriate and just cause. A scenario which is highly improbable, even in the UK where people have always been known for being and acting in a responsible manner. In return, I would suggest that you either prove your assessment with validated reports or at the very least apologize for your unwarranted asininely arrogant suggestion that I speak towards that which I know.
@@montydon6777 I’m calling bullshit on your 25 year claim. The minute anyone says that, you immediately know they’re talking out their arse. Booster reels are always deployed first to knock down any fire on the exposures in a situation like this, hopefully to stop fire extension into adjoining structures. That give the pump operator time to get a main supply hooked up to the hydrant, then you can get the big lines running.
@@Jimmythefish577 dear Jim boy been in a UK metropolitan brigade since 1996 old chap. A good crew would have 45mm hose Dutch roll or flacked out in a matter of 30 seconds decent driver get it charged ready to go .large amount of water with a decent throw needed for this as you can see it's very well developed .I'm sure OIC's or experienced Ff would agree😆.
The important thing is to get water onto the fire - hoses such as seen are almost instant and can be used within seconds - one house fire I reported on had water on the blaze within 14 seconds of the fire team arriving. Get the hoses going ASAP while the more substantial ones, which take a little longer to set up, are being prepared. Every second is important and the smaller hoses certainly help..
Ambulance. you go first Fire engine. No you go first Ambulance. no you go first Fire engine. you go first Every body . just get too the fkng fire already!!!
At least you still have the retained station when Labour were last in power the permanently close two retained stations closest to me, removed one fire engine from the manned station, closed our police station and custody suite and closed my towns General hospital and A&E down. Good old labour
+Dickie Mint There was nobody in the way of the firefighters. My son who filmed this clip was actually making his way back into the Butcher shop where he worked.
+Anonymous Unknown I see that you know that for an absolute fact - unlike my brother and his staff who owns the butcher shop next door. You must have some very good insider information, and I'm assuming you've notified the relevant authorities on this.
+Anonymous Unknown Thanks for this information, which I've passed on to the police. They will probably trace you by your IP address should they require further details.
been quicker calling TRUMPTON fire brigade, pugh pugh, barney mc.grew, cuthbert dibble and grub....glad im not living in this area ofwales...patheticservice.
Shop owners fault for not having adequate fire prevention and protection. He should be billed for wasting fire service time and hopefully his insurance is void, he could have killed someone.
+Virgil Grissom He got the staff out, the shop was neat and tidy (no excess rubbish, papers et al), he did what he could to minimise any fire risk. The level of fire protection you're implying is 1) prohibitively expensive and 2) probably unsuitable for a chip shop - you can't use water sprinklers as there's cooking fat, and you possibly can't use fire-proof materials because they have chemical coatings that are too risky to be used in food areas. Wasting the fire service time? When they took almost TWENTY MINUTES (20) for the first appliance and crew to arrive?!
