I've been watching this with interest I'm mid 60s had nearly 10 year's away from the course owing to work commitments then cancer and decided now I'm retired to start to play again so I thought take a block of lessons I actually stopped after the 3rd lesson I think most teacher's are focusing on tour pro swings these days takeaway wide club outside hands unti mid chest height turn behind the ball at least 90 degrees etc all these I found physically impossible and I nearly packed it in again then I had a thought I went to the practice field and didn't think just hit balls with my feet together an old drill from my first lessons 40 odd years ago and found I was swinging the club and hitting the ball reasonably well I stumbled on this video and noted first thing the takeaway and that the club was also across the line at top of the backswing so I watched this video time after time and set up a video trying to copy this got to say the result was very impressive when I hit balls felt loose and free without all that paralysis by analysis doubt I'll ever get back to single digits handicap but at least feel I can go out and enjoy the game again I'd recommend this video to anyone a simple way to swing the club freely

Hi Julian, I have had a few lessons from Brian. What I notice about these shots is how the body and head respond to the movement of the club head.There is no lunging forward of the shoulders, no thrusting forward of the hips and the weight comes through onto the left side behind the swing. Your head Julian stays pretty much centered until the strike has been made at which point it moves with the turn. I think these sequences sum up exactly what we as amateurs should aspire to achieve. I like your videos.

I m just wondering o l mate: if u put some umf into your swing you d probably reach the great land of Australia with your drive. Hve a go like 2 see it. Unfortunately 4 me I ve been trying your relaxed method: loose. easy swing: problem is my drives r out of sight, if u know what I mean. So it s my old 55yr old style: mash the sh... out of it. Works most of the time. Ta ta

Good luck with that approach George 😀, remember the club head is the steering wheel and the body is the engine, coordinating the body arms and club may look slow but it’s incredibly efficient and reliable and sends it plenty far enough 👌😀

Hey Julian, still practicing the dance every day and I now have a beautiful swing but ball goes nowhere. I bought a swingrite five days ago and immediately found the problem also why I hit a short fade I never released the club. For five days I have practiced with swing rite and now it releases where it is supposed to even on 6. I played today and took swing rite and used it five or six times before every drive and the distance I gained was truly amazing talking 40-50 yards. I shot 79 and if I putted better would have been 74. Can’t say enough about your group and how much joy golf is again. Thanks and hope some day when you are in America I will get to meet you, Gil

Hi Julian. I notice that during your backswing, the club head moves before your hands. The only way that can happen if you have slight tension in your hands and arms. A truly relaxed swing begins with your feet. (The dance), and your hands will move before the club head. Please provide your thoughts on this.
@JulianMellor
@JulianMellor 5 лет назад
Great observation, I hold the club at about 2-3 out of 10 so very relaxed, I often get asked about the start of the swing and my reply is “my motor is already running” everyone starts their swing differently and there is no one way of doing it, the most important thing is not to become static and overthink, if somebody asked you to throw something would you think about which bit moves first? Always good to discuss these things though 👍

With your loose wrists, Julian, it looks like a 'giant relaxed flick' at the ball (or an inch past). Would that concept be in line with how you feel the swing? The Swing Caddy videos on here and on the ES platform also give that impression, but I can't remember it being described in that way so I wonder if I've got a false impression. Thanks again for the videos.
@JulianMellor
@JulianMellor 5 лет назад
Just striking the ball with the club head Jack, not the worst thing to increase clubhead speed and direction 😉
@nealhazel3983
@nealhazel3983 5 лет назад
In your "Understanding Ball Position" video, you've encouraged us to experiment with ball position. It's interesting, however, that there is a pattern to your ball positions being further back than in conventional teaching - with all in this video being back of centre (with the exception of the woods , where you seem to be fading the ball). Brian has stated in comments that he plays the ball further back than conventional . I wonder, have you noticed that as a pattern among easiest swingers? (And before you say it, I know that it's whatever feels comfortable - but I'm just wondering if this is a feature of the swing to be aware of). Thanks.
@JulianMellor
@JulianMellor 5 лет назад
Hi Jack, I have seen noticeable improvement in ball striking from a lot of golfers who’ve moved the ball further back in the stance, the main thing to be aware of is weight shift through impact, far too many golfers leave their weight on the back foot through impact, and moving the ball back can encourages people to do this even more which I wouldn’t like to see. I would highly recommend all golfers to experiment with different positions and see which gives them the best results

love this julian and I have taken it on board for two weeks now. Had years of too many swing thoughts and tension leading to hooks and inconsistent release. Two observations from me so far is my distances have gone down a club which is fine, eg a gap wedge for 100yrds is now a pw and a 220yrd driver is max unless I get a huge summer bounce, that's fine for more fairways. My second point is on video you talked previously about not keeping head on ball or behind the ball at impact and just after and how you even recommend going with the torso early . I have found on your swing videos you do not do this on longer clubs like woods, even after impact your head is still on the ball/tee for a tad longer. If I copy this my woods are much better, going early or on impact seems to suit mid to short irons only, with longer clubs you pull them by being ahead, is this your thought as well? love your work , many thanks
@JulianMellor
@JulianMellor 4 года назад
Thanks Tony, I would say I’m still work in progress, thousands of hours keeping my head behind the ball doesn’t change without a fight, today I played and focused on moving my head correctly and I can’t tell you how long and straight I hit it with all clubs

I've found that it's added distance to my drives and irons, Kim. I confess, though, I'm still surprised by it. Strangely, I've also found that it also adds backspin on short irons and wedge shots to the green. On the surface, the greater backspin should reduce distance, so I can only presume that it's creating greater clubhead speed.
