Hi William. Another interesting wander. A relaxing break from the left-media hysteria at the moment. The Jolly Heretic did a fine piece about it earlier. That 'castle' was a Norman motte (mound with a wooden fort on it) and bailey (lower wooden enclosure) rather than the stone mediaeval castle a lot of visitors expected. Not as visually impressive for sure, but it helped those Norman rotters keep the local Saxon folk in check. That old church you showed at Greensted is said to be the oldest wooden church in the world, though only a few Saxon parts remain. Remember visiting it ages ago, so I'm pleased it's still there.
