See a tree that's related to Chocolate that produces baseball-sized flowers with "hands" coming out of them. Native to Southern Mexico and Guatemala, #Chiranthodendron pentadactylon grows into a massive, towering tree occupying montane areas in Southern Mexico and Central America. A member of the cotton/hibiscus family, this beast can also hybridize with the native California flannelbush, #Fremontodendron californicum, to produce an intergeneric hybrid that's somewhat common in California horticulture.
Despite its somewhat nefarious-sounding name, this plant is an important member of the cloud forest communities in which it grows, its flowers producing copious amounts of nectar for birds and bats.
