The film is heartbreakingly beautiful. I spent 5 years of my childhood living in Mocambique and often when I see films where Africa is portrayed, I feel people are portrayed as cardboard characters and the richness of culture and warmth of people is missing. This one doesn't, this film loves the people, believes in the people, it is a film full of human beings, not full of cardboard africans suffering. It shows the meeting of religions and traditions that is Africa and which is perfectly normal, the scavenging and inventiveness of people who have to make the most of what they have. It is great to see netflix give space to content that transcends borders, and tells a much wider story of our world, and it's a great directorial debut for Chiwetel. On a far more silly note, Trevor and Chiwetel in a show together.... it's a bit of a sensory overload (giggle).

Try living in the Netherlands. All films and series are subtitled. My 10 year old daughter often doesn't remember whether she's seen a film in Dutch or English. Sometimes shes convinced the film she saw a few months earlier was in Dutch.. until she sees the DVD cover or checks it again on Netflix and realizes it was subtitled.. It's great for learning English for the Dutch though... allthough we get a weird Dutch/American/ English accent in English by growing up with subtitled films/ series.😁👍🤔

My wife and I watched the film with our 10 year old son, who is growing up in the south of France, after spending most of his early years in Los Angeles...and while we're regular people without many frills, I think our son called the film "dark" and "sad" because he just isn't used to any real hardship-but I could see he was profoundly moved by the movie, and I thought it was tremendous, for all the reasons Trevor notes in the interview. Very impressive that Chiwetel learned a new language to play his part. The other actors were also excellent. I liked watching a movie that was really about something, that wasn't afraid to be authentic and face hardship head-on. Thanks to all who made the film possible.

This book has effected me greatly and I often tell others about the story. The technology aspect was fascinating, but the description of the drought had the most profound effect. I appreciate my life and circumstances even more. Thank you for producing this movie.

Just so amazing and great to see a Malawian story told in motion picture. It is an encouragement, a pure message of hope to the youth of Malawi, to wake up, work hard and be the people who bring solutions to the table than wait on politicians to prey on our ignorance and naive expectations. We are the change we want to see in our communities. Proud Malawian..

As soon as I recognized him I was like "OMG it's Mordo" Anyways going to his film which I have not yet seen, the use of subtitles I have seen in another show aired here in Jamaica called Generations which is an African soap opera. So to hear that the movie uses a similar structure bilingually I was taken back to that show. And to actually be in Malawi and speak a Malawian language? I agree authenticity is over 900000

The reason why chiwetel is underrated is because he's genuine. He doesn't try to brand himself or act superficial. He doesn't talk much about useless stuff, and is a man who genuinely loves what he does, and would rather talk about what he actually DOES than bullshit around about fake stuff.
@AG-eq9gx

Excellent work Chiwetel BUT I hear nobody talking about the boy- Maxwell Simba (Kenyan) who plays William and Aïssa Maïga (French) who plays Agnes, Williams mother. They played their roles wonderfully. The dog won my heart too and one of the saddest scenes is when he dies. This is an inspirational movie for all generations.👍💜

I just watched this movie also, and was so deeply touched and inspired by it. I’ve known this for a long time, but Americans are so incredibly spoiled. We kick, we scream, we demand and whine for more, when in reality we have so much and should be giving so much more back to the rest of the world. Humbling and beautiful true story. Thank you so much.

That's why many African immigrants especially Nigerians Excel , in the Western Countries, the opportunities are boundless if you work for it. People in America are truly spoiled and need to wake up.
