+Gadgets7777777 I agree that he's somewhat intelligent. However, I still think his level of ignorance and unwillingness to accept arguments based on facts are an insult to the institution of Harvard (much like George Bush's presidency was to Yale). I feel like on Fox it's almost like he has to follow a certain agenda but his own views aren't too far apart from the BS he spews on The Factor. He still says a lot of ignorant stuff like "Asian Americans! They're from Asia". Asia is a HUGE continent. It's extremely ignorant for an educated person to refer to "Asian" people as only those from the Far East (even then it's Fcked up to stereotype 20 different countries), when Asia encompasses the Indian subcontinent, Iran and technically the Middle East as well! I wish Jon had gone at him harder on that comment!

@Eric Cuevas How do figure that would go? Peoples debate styles differ and granted that John Stewart and the old Stephen Colbert always had the quick wit needed to keep up with people making rather silly arguments loudly, either through sarcasm or also being loud themselves to counter their opponents strategy mockingly, but Trevor Noah style is more laid back and less about the theatrical aspect of verbal spurring which granted is a very necessary tool while debating people like Ben Shapiro and Tomi Lahren. But i don't think that disqualifies him from being an intellectual just because he's not animated or well equipped to debate people who say outrageous lies with a straight face .

@albertkim7882
@albertkim7882 7 лет назад
Good observation but the reasons for the difference in emphasis goes very deep. This isn't just a simple, "oh, the issue is here, let's just address it", as if it would actually work in bringing people into agreement. The problem with O'Reilly's reasoning as well as many conservatives in this country, is that whatever drives their reasoning is what keeps them tied down to very simplistic explanations and propositions about what goes on with black Americans. It takes a lot of self-reflection and introspective work to come to terms with it and rectify it. O'Reilly's ego, and other's, are too big for this.

They're both right. In the 1970s my father was routinely pulled over while driving his Cadillac. Around 1980 my godfather wasn't allowed to buy a house in Throggs Neck. In 1993 I was jogging through Washington Heights/Ft Washington. Cops stopped me thinking that I had stolen something. In 2003 a girl told me there was no way she could tell her father she was with me. Around 2010 my friend had to threaten a lawsuit because the housing board in the Hudson Valley wouldn't let him buy a condo there. Hard work, however, has overcome the bias.

Watching Bill spar with John really convinces me that Bill is probably a much more decent person than he is on his show. Say what you will, but Bill is admirably giving John a real argument and his genuine beliefs. Also if we're honest, Bill is also entertaining and matching the humorous tone of the show when he could have just been a stick in the mud if he wanted to. Granted I only watch Bill when he's arguing with John, so them's my rose tinted glasses. In short...I wish Bill and John would wise up and do a show together. I'm an Asian immigrant and I usually like Jon Stewart, but he's just dead wrong here. It's a red herring to say: "oh but depends on where they come from." WTF? I have Romanian (white) friends who suffer just as much lack of privilege as anybody. It's not a "white privilege" it's an American citizen privilege. It's also insulting to say that Blacks have "different experience" than Asians, implying somehow that they are disadvantaged more so than Asians. African Americans for one, don't have to work their ass off just for a fucking visa, and to stay in this country. Asian and other immigrants (including white immigrants), despite being just as qualified, are constantly being taken advantage of by having to work longer hours, less holidays, lower start-up pay and benefits, harder opportunity for promotion etc., because we have to beg our employers for a visa. Blacks do not have to. I have a Romanian friend, a violinist (which means that he makes minimum wage) who had to pay 6000 dollars for his green card and he still doesn't know whether he would get it or not. Another Turkish friend of mine (also white) who literally ate 40 dollars a month for meals, to save up to go back to Turkey or to travel in the U.S. because he is under contract and cannot work during the summer from his studies, else he could get deported. Not to mention we have learn this impossible-for-us language called "English" just to be able to do anything. We have to adapt to not only learning the language, but also deal with culture clashes, deal with assimilation, deal with habituating to different food etc etc. Blacks don't have to, because they are already a native citizen of the country for many generations (most Asians are just first or second generation immigrants), that gives them privilege over us. In fact, I was at an all-black middle school. I had absolutely no privilege over those black kids by being more lighter-skinned. In fact, I was chased down the street with those kids while they were yelling: "I'm gonna kill yo Chinese!" I was a complete outcast and treated like second-rate-schoolmate, and spending my days in a classroom where I might as well listen to duck quacking, because I could not understand a single word the teacher was saying, which made me lag on future studies as I went through schools. There are also many stories about Black-on-Asian violence, and laws that plays into the favor of Blacks, such as affirmative action (which btw, disadvantages Asians, just based on their race, not even socio-economic class). Jon Stewart just has no fucking clue. He's singing to the "Blacks are just worse off than everybody" racist tune. And yes, it is racist to generalize "whites" and generalize "Blacks" as if they are all the same, while being hypocritical and pointing out that Asians are not the same group. Fuck him.

@pooface5
@pooface5 8 лет назад
The point O'Reilly misses and Jon Stewart didn't touch on is the fact that to really be successful and make it you have to start "working hard" as a CHILD. How can you expect a CHILD, growing up in a very low income area, when dad may or may not be around, when theres gangs and drugs and alcohol all over the place and that whole cultures that is WAY different then the cultures of middle/upper class, to know what to do succeed in life? With potentially little to no guidance or poor guidance from the parents in many cases? You can't just grow up in an environment like that and then suddenly at the age of 18 go to college if you haven't even finished high school yet or if you did very poorly and didn't learn much. Kids are easily influenced by their environment, and its very far fetched to expect a young child to somehow figure out he needs to ignore what goes on around him/her and to study and find a path success.
@josephvadenshelley2206

You make a couple of good points, but to conflate the issues you mentioned into "white privilege" is ignoring many other points, such as the example of so-called "Asian privilege."
@hazukichanx408
@hazukichanx408 5 лет назад
+M - Excellent point. Environment is a huge factor; if you grow up in a craphole surrounded by desperate, angry people, constantly being pushed around and dragged into trouble against your will, then you don't have the same chances of making it through college as someone who grows up in a cozy house with great neighbors. What we can do about this is to improve the environments by caring for people who need it, by maintaining buildings better, setting up positive initiatives in the community to help build a sense of belonging and cooperation instead of every person for themselves, dog-eat-dog mentality... and this should of course include racial ghettos. Link those ghettos back into the rest of the city with support from outside and programs to make sure their kids have access to books, computers, good schools. Positive change starts with positive action.^^

@spryhuman1297
@spryhuman1297 5 лет назад
@Mrcookie T If a kid doesn't grow up in an environment where working hard and behaving leads to good or better outcomes, how are you going to hold that kid responsible for not doing their homework and behaving in school? Also, no one is saying that people are not supposed to be held accountable for their actions. All that is being said is that since people are subjected to different environments, there is going to be people who have more and better opportunities because they had that chance. If a murderer had grown up in a stable household with two parents, he might not have ever committed the crime. Yes, people can make choices, but they don't really have agency. "Free will" is something that humans often think that they have, but we are conditioned to our surroundings and our environment to make certain decisions. Also, I don't even really think murder is analogous to a child's choices on whether or not they should do their homework just by nature of their consequences and the literal end of a person's life. You saying that poverty is something that is controllable is a laughably small minded thing to say. If a poor person is conditioned to be a certain way, then how in the world can you expect them to pull themselves by their bootstraps and go on their merry way? It is known that when you give someone who is poor a lot of money and give a more wealthy person (let's say middle class) the same amount of money, poor people will not know how to use it in the same productive way that the wealthier person does. This is why we need to educate people from the beginning on how to reasonably function within society. But if they grow up in a home that is less wealthy and has not been taught from THEIR parents how to do differently and be better than them, it's much harder for those children to succeed in life obtain some type of agency over their parents or making good education more accessible. If things could be as simple as saying, "hey, you there poor person, it's time for you to get up and buck society by going back to school and getting a good education and then working a job so that you can become a model citizen," then we wouldn't have so many problems in our society. Sorry if this is a little too SJWy for you, but that was a pretty privileged thing for you to say.
@Edeinawc
@Edeinawc 4 года назад
@Mrcookie T Alright. So it seems to come down to not having a good home environment. After all, there's not much point in getting good grades or rewards at school if at home they don't mean anything. America has existed in a society that has been openly and lawfully racist up to most of the 60's in many states. Lawful racism has ended. There is still open racism of course, but it's not lawful, so in the eyes of the law we are all equal. However, how do you expect things to change within a couple of generations? If you grandfather couldn't even sit next to a white person, let alone hold a similar paying job no matter their talent, how can the next generation have a good family core and values? If you have parents that are stable and well respected and can interact with other members of society in equal terms, it is more likely you'll end up the same. How do you just suddenly "educate" people to be that way if only some years ago they couldn't? After a few hundred years of blatant suppression you're left with a broken society that needs to get by however they can. That's what systemic means. It was enforced by several factors, a system with an objective of leaving people in unequal terms. That system no longer exists but there is plenty of residual effects (a term that Bill apparently dislikes). Racism might not be lawfully enforced nowadays, but you, as an individual, are a result of several generations influencing the next with whatever care and nurturing (or lack thereof) that they could provide. There's plenty of space for individual growth and free will, but when that possibility has only been available for such a short time it's a bit hard to argue that a disparity exists.

What a great comradary these two had. Despite their differences they are able to not only debate each other respectfully, but also crack jokes and come to a middle ground as a consensus. As much as Bill is kind of a piece of shit sometimes (and the horrible recent allegations towards him), I genuinely understand what he is saying. He agrees with Jon that there is a factor in place, but I think his problem with the phrase "white privilege" is that it seems to be an ever-encompassing term that applies ubiquitously to all white people - which is in fact false. If you grow up as Kanye West's kids, versus growing up as a poor white kid in the South, it seems to me that white privilege no longer applies. I also understand that there is more black Americans that struggle compared to whites - but the terminology falsely implies that all white people have an advantage over all black people. I don't really think that is the case in all situations, which I think is what Bill is trying to get at here. Jon, as always, is an absolute stunning personality who is able to convey his points in a jovial and convincing manner. I love how he was able to land on a middle ground with Bill just by changing the terminology. Its amazing he was able to pick up that the wording and implications is what Bill had a problem with over just a couple minutes of discussion. I miss the times when debates like these could happen.

But then again we don't have the same history at all when it comes to slavery. Black people in Europe are usually people who've immigrated (now or generations back). We didn't have the Jim Crow laws or any of that shit. I agree that the quicker they can get rid of race issues the better, but we're not really gonna get there if we don't acknowledge it. What needs to happen? Race to not mean a thing. How? Ehhh, that's the problem. The more we talk about it, the bigger of a deal we make it. But if we don't talk about it, how are we going to change the current situation? We must eliminate that social difference somehow. How about we start caring about poor people as a whole, instead of solely focusing on poor black people. The term "white privilege" does seem weird, because it implies that the fact that bigger percentages black people are poor than white people means that every white person has an advantage. Thus we got the "you're white, you've got privilege" halfwits, completely skewing the message. What really describes a phenomenon that as a whole does exist, becomes a far left buzzword. Doesn't really help anyone. Whenever someone mentions a legit racial injustice, they're immediately called a crazy coockoo Social Justice Warrior femnazi, because everyone's sick of the racist "anti racist" people, and therefore assumes everyone who starts talking about race is like that. I think many white people are sick of being pushed into a guilt they don't deserve, and all this just stops any real discussions about actual issues from happening. If everyone would just stop thinking of all left leaning people as 18 year old girls with tumblr and all right leaning people as 60 year old, greedy old businessmen, that'd be nice.

Actually when Bill O'Reilly said "It's all relative" and that others have had it much easier than him, he brought up an interesting point that Jon Stewart didn't really acknowledge.
@garywood97
@garywood97 7 лет назад
The reason that's so important is because it's also relative WITHIN a race. Smart and beautiful people are privileged over ugly and stupid people. That's why focusing just on race isn't a good approach.

Now for everyone who upvoted OP's comment, take a second more and think. OP, is essentially describing "intersectionality". It's race, class, ability, color, gender, orientation, etc. Everyone has privileges that play out in different ways on an individual level.

That's what I was thinking! Solid point. It sucks that both sides tend to dismiss valid statements, for fear of giving leverage to the "opposition".

I don't think this was dismissed, just not thought to be that relevant. Like was said at the end, it's a Factor, and there are a bunch of factors, and within any set of factors there are relative differences if you only focus on one of them (like race).

This entire segment was Jon simply trying to get Bill to understand that white privilege is not something to be ashamed of; it's something to be aware of. So simple, and yet...

The term white privilege implies that white people are getting something extra, when it's not that. The terminology is misleading, kind of.

I don't really like the term white-privilege because it's not that accurate. Think a more accurate term is non-white male disadvantage.

This is how you debate logically and without emotional leakage. It is not about fighting or name calling. It is about finding common ground and compromise. I really wish this was a class or teaching for all leaders in office.
