Chloë's been whipping around the Balisong since she was 11 years old. It's like her peewee soccer league. Conan - TBS August 13, 2013 All Rights Are Reserved to Conan - TBS
While holding a 20$ Amazon butterfly knife clone “and they teach you all this stuff, and they tell you to respect the art”. I literally couldn’t keep myself together after hearing that. Ima go watch will Hersch to ease my pain from this sacrilege
My ex-wife worked as the assistant manager of a cutlery store during the 80s. She was a young, slim, petite, pretty woman with a high-pitched voice, and so people would always underestimate her... until she'd demonstrate her balisong-flipping skills. She was fast, could flip two of the knives around at once, and could hold a conversation while doing it. Watching peoples' reaction to that was fun. And she sold a LOT of knives that way.
@@raulallangarlitos7573the idea of balisong flipping isn’t useless. It’s for dexterity / hand eye coordination. And the basic opening is actually one of the most useful and fastest openings which CAN be utilized in self defense. Tell a Philippino martial artist that balisong moves are useless. Just as effective as a Karambit if used correctly. Good attempt at talking out your ass though lmao!
Agreed. She probably could do some more complex stuff, but they were so impressed even with the double rollover. Also, it would really suck to drop it in front of so many people.
Im a flipper and a speedcuber so i see this sort of thing alot and ive come to a conclusion. Shut the hell up. Shes an actor not a flipper. Its not supposed to be impressive, its just a small quirk she learned from something she had to act in.
When I was about her age, I found a discarded butterfly knife in my yard. My sister and I would do just what she did, mindlessly flipping it open and shut with ease while watching TV. We got pretty good at it until my mom took it away for some reason. Good times! 😂
@@biaxolotl5171 honestly you should get a squiddy clone if you don't live in the us, just find a good one, there's some really nice one, like bro for me i wanted to buy a squiddy b cuz i was like yea its really cheap but then i saw the shipment was 40 OR 50 DOLLARS. bro honestly, for the quality of it i bought a triton clone for 65 dollars and only around 30 dollars which cost less than the squiddy b.
@@thaprophet9617 bro the shipment for me was like 120 bucks so i didn't want to buy a pretty cheap balisong for 120, i bought a 60 dollars triton clone and it's honestly pretty good
@@soupiratethesoup6161 clones are horrible, terrible hardware and way worse than something like a squiddy, plus you can get good trainers second hand that don't steal peoples designs in a shittier way
@@ninjanoafa8636 i dont have a live blade currently, so im just using i believe its the squiddy c? I think thats the white one, correct me if im wrong. what about you man?
Labeling Balisong as a tool made for robbers is kinda rude though. You should look up the history of this weapon before making such mess on the internet.
@@BlutigeTranen Not true, i've owned a couple before. beginner openings and closings. Its the very first thing you learn with a butterfly knife and takes all of less than a minute to learn. I'm surprised she didn't teach Conan.
It's the internet so of course it's only going to be impressive when it's an 80 year old Filippino guy who has been perpetually flicking balisongs ever since he was 4. Anything less than that will get hated on.
First Name Last Name Yeaa unfortunately that somebody is you! He was saying that just because she knew the proper name doesn’t mean she learnt from some professional Filipino instructor because guess what? We know the name too and sure as hell didn’t learn from a professional. He was pointing out the stupidity and irony of the comment and quiet poetically I’m doing the same to you!
I do I’m a sicario and it works to intimidate your (pay/contract) besides can someone pLS tell me why you learn this tricks if you are not gonna do nothing with it
No matter if she was particularly skillful in flipping around or not, a knife is made for cutting, but she did not cut anything. So, she does not know how to handle it.
@@einundsiebenziger5488 I mean, she might be able to. I think she only did the basic opening because if you do end up flinging into the crowd and kill somone, you're in big trouble.
Just Some Random fellow Salazar: I’ve killed plenty of pirates. They’re a diamond in a dozen backstabbing scumbags. Like you, ow. No offense.” Jack: “if you managed to kill them I assure you they will not like me.”
I once tried to do that with my grandfather's balisong when I'm 8 years old; I never knew that he honed and sharpened that balisong as a proper stabbing/slashing balisong and not just a show balisong until I failed in my flipping attempt
She’s the reason I got one of those as a kid. Not a real one, but a trainer, which is also what she’s using in this video. It’s very easy to do with a trainer as you have no risk of getting cut. Not hating whatsoever, just thought I’d point that out.
Carlos yt is even more powerful than you think. Yesterday i realized kickass was on netflix and I thought “maybe tomorrow night”... and here i am watching this suggested video😱
@@sfdjasfdjfdshlksfdsfa not really much of a flex tbh. Considering when people get into niche hobbies like balisongs it's when they're young. Got my first one at 11yo as well so I don't really see why people find it so important to point it out.
And when you visit Batangas (a northern province), the "balisong" gets to be more like a souvenir/collectors item, you have to get one for your self before leaving - there's the toy-ish versions (still sharp, but less pointy), and the full weapon-types. It comes in all shapes and sizes, and some you can have customized. 💯
more trivia: they were orginally fishing knives in order to have one hand free for the boat when you open/close the knife. And you do not want to have an open knife lying around in your boat if you are trying to heave in a tuna fish
In the Philippines, I had balisong when I was high school. I never thought or learned tricks in flipping it. Now I learned from foriegners using balisong. Back home the use of balisong is supposed to be for self defense or included in a key chain for miscelaneous use. May balisong was used 100% in peeling bananas, mangoes, all other fruits or cutting papers in school hehe. I love balisong.
OMG, she used the proper name. That's awesome!! She could learn quite a few new moves but it's damn good that she learned it at all. I've used one for almost 40 years at this point and she seems to have some potential. Good for her.
@@leonardocozzitorto2579 if you know anything about late night talk shows its rehearsed before hand they do the same interview twice she knew she was going to use the butterfly knife its why it was sitting right next to her they rehearsed the whole interview before hand all us late night talk shows do interviews twice once for practice second time taping it so she already did the butterfly knife before that
@@chazeverett send me a link that proves this and i will believe you and however the fact that they were the ones to propose this to her doesn't change she hasn't done that since she was eleven and if the fact that you said before was true and she used one time before already that doesn't change anything she still didn't practice it for a long time
@@leonardocozzitorto2579 not really did it twice, talk shows usually collaborate with the guests/or their team to create a talking point (what question are going to be asked, what shouldn't, what the guests wants to showcase, ect.) So it might be true that she hasn't done it since she was 11, but her team and the show agreed that she wannna showcase it for the show. That's why the show prepared the knifes for her.
I just looked it up. It's legal in California if it's under 2 inches. I know in Texas it was illegal to own one, they were considered switchblades. As of 2013, they're legal to own in Texas now. Unfortunately, I got caught with one before it was legal in Texas. 😔
Instructor: "okay everyone, today in self defense class we're going to learn how to do several magic tricks and card flourishes that take years to master. This will distract your attacker and create an opening
A balisong, also known as a fan knife, butterfly knife or Batangas knife, is a folding pocketknife from the Philippines. Its distinct features are two handles counter-rotating around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles. A latch holds the handles together, typically mounted on the one facing the cutting edge (the "bite handle"). A butterfly knife in open and closed position. The balisong was commonly used by Filipinos, especially those in the Tagalog region, as a self-defense and pocket utility knife. Hollow-ground balisongs were also used as straight razors before conventional razors were available in the Philippines. In the hands of a trained user, the knife blade can be brought to bear quickly using one hand. Manipulations, called "flipping", are performed for art or amusement. Blunt "trainer" versions of these knives are available and can be used to practice tricks without the risk of injury. The knife is now illegal or restricted in some countries, often under the same laws and for the same reasons that switchblades or concealed weapons are restricted. Within the Philippines, it is no longer as common in urban areas as in the past.
I remember when she was a master knife thrower on an episode of My Name is Earl when she was about 10 or so. I was like 11 already a huge fan of the show and loved she came on for an episode. Thats when I became a real big fan of hers. She is just so great!
I immediately remembered a (letterman??) interview where Angelina Jolie did precisely the same thing! Honestly haven’t seen somebody do this for a while! Anyways, I love seeing Chloë in interviews. Always seems so fun and chill at the same time 😅
I started getting into balisong flipping after watching kick ass. Just seemed so cool and kinda a fun interesting thing. And now its like my version of a fidget spinner.
God, these are literally just easy opens over and over again, goddamn this crowd would probably give a standing ovation to a bottle cap rolling across the floor.
Trevor Saunar That isnt true haha. After 300+ years of being pushed aside and enslaved and brought to other countries for exhibitions like some sort of exotic animals, wouldn't you want to have a sense of identity and try to be proud and push it forward?? Ur very ignorant.
it seems difficult at first but its pretty easy to learn after a few tries (i meant opening it rather than doing all the tricks, thats the difficult part)
I cut my finger to the bone one time, and didn't even know how or when it happened, blood had dropped all the way down my arm, pants, shoes and finally all over the floor before I noticed. Had to get stitches and everything, still dunno how it happened.
