agree that there are some non violent crimes that do not warrant incarnation, however for that to work in our current system many states would need to alter their definition of violent crime because their are countless crimes that most people would agree are very serious and violent but are not considered violent. This was a dangerous flaw with Proposition 57, which California voters approved in 2016 by a wide margin. Proponents reassured voters that that the measure would apply only to non-violent offenders, and that only those inmates who posed no threat to public safety would be eligible for release. The public unknowingly supported a bill that would allow those convicted of 20 clearly violent crimes that aren’t classified as violent, including rape of an unconscious person, trafficking a child for prostitution, assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence to be released under prop 57. California is dealing with the aftermath of passing a bill without a clear and concise understanding . So, I absolutely agree but only for truly non violent offenses not non violent under the law

I worked with someone that did fake her own death. She was in an abusive relationship and found out she was pregnant. She was pretty much trapped and never left alone. He would beat her so bad that one day she finally had a change to escape. Her sister helped her and then faked that she died. This was back in the 80s. She moved to Florida and later her sister joined her. She changed her name and never looked back.

I think you can justify faking your death or something if you’re in danger. Like not kidnapping just pretending you’re dead.
@melissamack333
@melissamack333 Год назад
And technically people ARE allowed to just disappear. Like, I see no problem with someone going off the grid if say, they're in an abusive relationship or something. Or just want to start a new life. You're allowed to do that as an adult, but don't FAKE a crime & use resources that could've been allocated elsewhere, for people who are REALLY in danger. That's what bothers me. Like if you wanna leave, then do it, but don't pretend to be a victim of something you're not!😤
@nina.robbs565

or if you have a life insurance policy and have a way of receiving the funds post-fake death haha /sarcasm however, faking a kidnapping is honestly worse than faking death imo. because not only does it take away resources--- it really does waste people's emotional resources as Kendall said, so that the affected public will not care about the next missing person as much, because what if it's another fake? The public's help is so often instrumental to locating missing people, don't wanna **** that up. man some of these women really take advantage of missing white girl syndrome. it's sickening.
@anikav

Our autistic son eloped into the nearby woods a few years ago unnoticed, and the local Germans and the police pulled out all the stops to find him after we searched for 45 minutes to no avail. Every nearby person went out on horseback, ATV, and foot, and the police had helicopters out searching. I am forever grateful to all of them. Within an hour someone found him and brought him home. The experience was surreal, and my husband and I had wildly different reactions. He panicked from the beginning, and my brain went straight into denial mode, telling me he'd be totally fine and found right away because nothing could possibly happen to him, even though logically, I knew better. It was surreal because I felt like I *should* be panicking but *couldn't*, which made me feel like the world's shittiest parent. As soon as he was back and it was over, that protective fog lifted and then I was hit with the big, scary feels. My heart goes out to these parents and those of the genuinely missing, because those couple of hours will stick with me forever.

On the okay/not okay topic to fake a kidnapping. 4 years ago I was in a violent relationship, he threatened my kids lives if I were to seek help or tell anyone what was happening (even though it was obvious), instead I went missing, I kind of ran away, used a burner phone to contact family and let them know I was okay, and I also couldn’t be traced. While I know my family and friends were in a panic, I solely believed, and still do believe that my children’s live were at risk, if he thought I was unalive, my babies would be safe from him. (They were with family, I’m also safe as are my kids and I ultimately went to police and he got 6 years of prison with three tries of house arrest/home detention) so while I know if would’ve been hard for everyone else, I would do it all again if it meant my babies were safe.

The fact that there are so many missing and endangered people who do not get the level of attention and resources made available to them as quickly as Chloe did is incredibly infuriating. Cases like this are unbelievably frustrating and like a slap in the face to the families of those who are actually going through having a loved one who is missing. I can understand potentially faking your death to escape a potentially dangerous situation. However, faking your kidnapping is inexcusable. She was so stupid about this and obviously didn't think if through very well if she was just going to reappear the next day. Although, it was probably for the best she didn't drag this out because she very easily could have caused a panic that there was someone impersonating a police officer that were targeting people in the community. I definitely believe she should face some kind of legal action for what she did. Paying back restitution is just the tip of the iceberg for what she deserves. There are better ways to handle potentially embarrassing situations. The fact that she wasn't going to be graduating like all her friends and family thought is going to be footnote in comparison to the chaos she caused and the backlash she is now facing. My heart really goes out to the families of actual missing and endangered people and I hope that cases like this do not keep damaging the efforts that police put into looking for their loved ones, because let's be honest here: every time some falsely reports a kidnapping or abduction, the only thing they are really doing is hurting actual victims. Chloe probably got attention because she was a pretty, well off, white, woman. If she was a low income, person of color she would not have gotten nearly as many people to jump in to help her as quickly as they did. So many victims don't get the attention they deserve because they are viewed as "not as important" to the media. It honestly makes me sick just thinking about it.

So I was in an abusive relationship and also an incredibly abusive marriage, and I honestly feel like faking a kidnapping or death is just too far in the cases ive heard about. But really, I don't know every person and every situation, so there very well may be people out there who feel like faking your death or kidnapping is the only option or the best option, and I dont have any right to judge someone about a situation I don't know anything about. So as much as I'd say that I can't think of a situation where doing that is the best option, I cannot think of every situation so im sure there's cases where that really is the only option. I had to trick my ex husband into getting on a plane and going back home, then when he landed I told him I didn't have a return ticket and I'd be filing for divorce. Then I left the state for 2 months because I was scared he was going to come find me. I literally left almost everything I had behind because I didn't have time to pack it all up, and I to this day have never gone back to the town I was living in when I left him. He always promised me he would kill me if I left him, so leaving him was definitely one of the scariest things I've ever done. If you're going to fake a kidnapping, atleast call the police and tell them you're fine so when it's reported they know(if the situation allows obviously) . I just don't think wasting all those resources is right🤷‍♀️ *Edited for clarity*

I’m so sorry you were in that situation 😣 I also have experience with DV but I actually do think it’s justified in extreme cases. Some people are genuinely dangerous (a lot, actually 😣 women are killed all the time by partners/former partners 😣). If your abusive spouse/partner is a cop for example or he knows cops, then telling them (in any department) that you’re actually just fine would mean he would easily find out. Not all people have close family, and in so many DV situations, the abuser has made sure you’ve burned all your bridges 😣 Some women sadly _feel_ they have no one left to go to (and even more sadly, often they truly don’t. People don’t understand DV. If a friend helps a woman escape DV, over and over again, but she always goes back, that can be frustrating. Those friends often say “I’m not doing it again. You’re on your own”. I completely understand why they feel that way, but they don’t know why it’s so difficult - and often lethal - to leave an abuser for the last time. On average, women leave 7 times before leaving for good, and on that last time, the risk of being murdered is 500 TIMES HIGHER 😭). Lots of women are cut off from their friends and family due to that very reason. I obviously think it’s extreme to fake your own death, but if someone in severe DV felt she had no other choice, I wouldn’t judge her. Too many women are murdered. Restraining orders are just pieces of paper, and it’s just a threat of going to jail. If he doesn’t care about the cops being called when he’s hitting her, he won’t care about a piece of paper 🤦🏼‍♀️ I have seen far too many cases where a woman has moved cross-country, and he’s turned up - even MONTHS later - and murdered her 😔 The same desperation that drives someone to kill (or attempt to) their abusive partner, is the same desperation that could make someone want to fake their own death. Each situation is unique, so I wouldn’t completely dismiss every case of a DV victim faking their death. (Just as a ps. That’s not the situation in the case in the video whatsoever 😂 She’s in a whooooole other league 😂)

That’s so senseless. She’s just a young girl, not fully an adult, under so much stress. Because she probably wasn’t in a situation that she was comfortable telling her parents or close loved ones that she failed. I think it’s sick to judge her like that. Even arrest her?! Would never happen over here in Europe. Not even a fully adult, psychologically. Where I live, she would have been taken care of to continue her path. No criminal inclinations whatsoever. Oh dear USA.

I guess my reservation with the matter at hand (voluntarily going missing) is that I truly, truly doubt that this is done in someone's right mind. If your only options are literally "I want to disappear" that is a parallel to suicidal ideation, IMO. Particularly with the way that she reappeared as the alarms were raised and there was search efforts for her, and extra so because of how she folded to the cops as soon as they questioned her story. I understand that to a lot of people suffering from having missing family members, the way that this department was able to mobilize for search efforts and was taken seriously. On the other hand, I look at this and I see someone who was struggling with a severe mental health crisis that she genuinely thought her best option was to fake her kidnapping. And all this disgust towards her for it and calling her an enemy of the people when for all we know she was contemplating suicide, and didn't want her loved ones to think it was their fault by making it look like it was something else. Unlike sherri, who continuously lied to the public and had a plan in mind for what she was doing (cheating on her spouse), all we know about this girl is that she had seriously failed her family's expectations and was still around the area. If I'd been in that sort of mindset, and I was in her shoes, I'd be thinking to myself "I should have just gone through with it." because then my loved ones wouldn't have the shame of the criminal investigation on their hands. I'm definitely projecting, but so are everyone else here. It's not as though she asked for her loved ones to call in those resources. We shouldn't be solely mad at her that she did, we should be mad that these resources don't go to everyone who is missing. Going to be honest, guilting people who are already in desperate situations with "what about your loved ones!" as though the person's own feelings don't matter is pretty disgusting. This is not a situation that most individuals would put themselves in without extraordinary circumstances. I wouldn't be surprised if in the trial it is brought up that she was contemplating ending her own life as a mitigating factor. And if that truly was the case, then the resources weren't "wasted", she was found and brought home safe and alive. Sherri is an outlier of outliers and her disgusting desire to cheat and not get caught shouldn't remove our ability to reserve empathy for people like Chloe. And prison time? Fuck that. What sort of message are you sending to people in mental crises who ARE considering disappearing either literally or metaphorically by ending your own life? What is the GOAL of prison time? Is she a harm to her community? No! What the fuck. She gave up the story at the first pushback of officers. If I saw this and I was still in that sort of deep depression, I would just go "alright. I'll just end it then. That way they'll know what happened to me."

Hey Kendall, I think it would be really great if you could cover the case of Joey Lynn Offutt. I'm from a small town in PA called Sykesville and 15 years ago there was a mysterious fire in which the burned remains of her baby boy Alexis were found. After all these years, Joey still has not been found and her family is still searching for answers. I am a neighbor from the town and live on the same street where the house fire happened. Her two daughters had to grow up without their mother and are still searching for the truth. I truly feel bad for her mother because she might have PTSD from this ordeal. The thing with PTSD is that you do not have to be in a situation where your life is actually in danger to be traumatised;. You "only" need to actually believe it or be in a distressing situation: a false active shooter alarm where you have to stay sheltered can give you PTSD. So your daughter pretending to have been abducted, searching for her, ... is more than enough to create trauma and PTSD
