Chocolate factory explosion in Pennsylvania caught on camera 

When Willy wonka says don’t touch anything and no one listens, everything in the inventing room goes boom.

This particularly sucks because Palmer is one of the very few chocolate manufacturers that has been able to operate independently of Mars and Hershey. I hope they can recover and the families find peace. Edit: There seems to be some confusion. 1: M&M/Mars is a candy manufacturer, best known for chocolate. We do not make candy on the surface of Mars. 2: I am not implying this is sabotage. Those who think so would do well to educate themselves: there are many, many powdered food products that, when airborne as a fine particulate, are combustible and HIGHLY explosive. Among these are powdered sugar, cocoa, and especially dehydrated milk. Other highly combustible airborne food particulates are flour, barley powder, and yeast. A little research will show how flour mills, breweries, and other plants of the past have been blown to smithereens due to combustion of these substances. Food production plants have extremely stringent safeguards in place to keep airborne particles down, but accidents do happen.

For those who lost their family members in such work area, I hope the families find peace through such sudden event. This hits hard in the feels.

I'm from this area. The sad part is, management could have simply said "Get out, now" when the smell was detected. Instead, according to one of the survivors, management said "Well, let's see what higher ups have to say, until then get back to work." A really messed up situation that could've prevented the lives lost and severe injuries. One victim told her story, and it was absolutely horrifying to read. Her arm caught fire after the explosion. Then as she ran, the floor collapsed underneath her and she fell into a vat of chocolate, breaking both of her ankles but extinguishing the flames on her arm. She was trapped for several hours until rescuers pulled her out. My heart goes out to her, and to all involved in this horrific event.

Death is sad, but for a person simply doing their job to provide for a family and knowing they will never come home is heartbreaking. Praying for the family of the fallen and to find the missing.

I actually drove by this location yesterday, and I saw the smoke and ambulances. I was confused at first, but after knowing the situation, I really hope they find more survivors and that they recover soon.

For those who do not know, it was said to be a gas leak. Going past this location to work only a few blocks down is heart breaking… god bless everyone involved and their loved ones.🙏

I live in this area and can’t believe it made national news. They’re still looking for missing people… fortunately this morning they recovered someone alive. It’s pouring rain here right now making it harder but they have countless people working non stop. I hope they find the remaining lost people alive like the last person they found. It’s so saddening. They’re saying it could have been a gas leak leading to an explosion.

organic dust particles mixed into the air just right can blow up like this. I worked at a flavored coffee company and they warned us about the flavor powders they put into chocolate coffee having a history of blowing up when atomized in the air. I don't know if its related at all to this incident but pretty scary to think about this happening in a food production warehouse.

Needless to say, Willy Wonka's safety record has never been good. Levity and shock aside, RIP to those who died and I hope their families are doing okay and that whoever made this happen is brought to justice and that the families get reparations.

In an aftermath video you can hear a woman tell alert responders "You don't work here, you need to leave" as she tries to shoo away people that just watched all her beloved "employees" go through something they all needed help with. Why she hasn't been publically identified is a severe injustice to all victims of this tragedy.

On a positive note, M & M's rained down in a 5 mile radius.

I mean Willy wonka has questionable safety protocols, but this blows them out of the water.

Maybe they just discovered a formula for super crunchy chocolate and something went wrong.

Very sad indeed. I did my COMPEX training last year (explosive atmospheres) . The instructor said the next big one will be a food factory, more specifically sweets.. For those that don't know, sugar is very explosive in dust form and is extensively used in sweet making. There's a vid on RU-vid about a sugar plant that went up, quite a few killed.

Nobody thinks going to work will be their last day... This is so sad. Peace and Strength to the ones lost and their families.

Half of the roof was still in tact, midair. I can’t imagine a natural gas or chemical explosion in a chocolate factory that could pop a roof top off like it was a pop can lid.

Hmmm, I was expecting a lot of chocolate flying everywhere from the explosion

I've seen several comments from people saying they wouldn't expect a chocolate factory to explode like this. As someone who worked at one, this is actually a regularly discussed safety concern. I do not know what happened in this particular instance, but the most common cause of these kind of massive individual explosions is dust. Dust is flammable and in large enough quantities can do this kind of damage.

WTF ingredient in making chocolate has that capability!?

Powdery substances that normally do not burn can burn if the powder becomes airborne. For example, if you drop a match onto a pile of four nothing will happen. If that same flour is thrown up into the air and onto a source of ignition it can ignite and burn very quickly. Flour mills do occasionally blow up from that. Maybe cocoa powder behaves similarly.
