The ring choke trick was pretty neat. I'll have to give that a try. You can also run the tail of your climbing line through the carabiner to make your system retrievable like the pinto. You can descend one-third of your rope length. I also recommend facing the gate of the carabiner away from the anchor. A gate grinding down the trunk makes me cringe.

I have a question. What about girth hitching a sling that is long enough to girth around tree but not too long. Then use a biner with a micro pulley. Run your rope through pulley using DRT? It would choke plus give you a way to the ground smoothly.

One could bomb out of a tree on a VT alone... however it would have to be an authentic blue water rope technora as it wont melt on the rope as conventional prusik material.

Great stuff! Thanks for the ideas. Is it OK to choke the spar for the single line and have a Petzl grigri for lowering, much like the mega watt?

The Grigri is NOT designed to be used “hands free” it may work ok sometimes but it’s not going to work well on ropes of the appropriate diameter to be used in tree work, and it’s not designed to work reliably without some holding the brake strand of the rope. There are many other devices like the megawatt which can be used hands free, and many are Good quality, safe and totally usable, but they are most all either more expensive or have some other significant functional drawback when compared to the Megawatt.

Thanks for the excellent tips! Will that Pinto pulley withstand the load if it is used in that position against the tree? Can it withstand, for example, descending with a rope?

Will it withstand? Absolutely 👍🏼 and even if the pulley fails there is the becket which would prevent catastrophic failure. Is it officially“approved by the manufacturer” No…. So of course you should never do it.

Before I switched to mechanical devices I would always come down single line on a chocked spar with just my hitch cord. Never had a problem.

Yeah it can be done with the right techniques, especially if you’re on the lighter side, and if you’re just coming down once and apply some extra friction with your second hand on the way down. The risk is that in an emergency situation when adrenaline is high and brains are low that a hitch-cord only system can get bound up suddenly or over-released, causing a dangerous and erratic descent. Also, newer climbers and bigger climbers will have a much harder time managing that hitch by itself.

@@Stridertrees I couldnt agree more. Its definitely not the best way to go about it but when your going smoothly and not trying to bomb out youll be ok. I am around 175lbs without gear. Either way I dont even use hitch cord anymore. Thanks for the reply!

A Grigi is designed NOT to be used “hands free” so it would be a misuse. There are other devices on the market like the Megawatt I was using which are designed for hands free use.

If you weigh more than 200 lbs, this TreeRex harness is super uncomfortable. Digs into your kidneys, if you add a Saw, forget about it. Not enough padding for larger dudes.

"Bowlines have a way of coming loose"???? I've NEVER had a bowline come loose on me, and I've tied thousands.

Yeah, I had to sit up and take note of that comment as well....my (USN) Father taught be the Bowline in the 70's, I used it in the Navy myself till '93, and have never once had one come undone in the ensuing 30 years I the tree business...

There are some great videos about it if you want to see how. When set and loaded and left you are correct they don’t slip or roll loose, but when used as a termination knot for climbing or as an anchor the knot is loaded then released repeated and that tension/release cycling can cause it to work free pretty reliably.

Well, it is true though. Bowlines have been known to come loose when they are weighted sideways in the eye or repeatedly loaded and unloaded. Many mountaineering clubs specifically recommend against using a simple bowline for life support. Locked bowlines like the Yosemite-Variation or the double-Bowline are safe though.
