democracynow.org - Who is the world-renowned political dissident Noam Chomsky voting for? "In the primaries, I would prefer Bernie Sanders," Chomsky says. "If Clinton is nominated and it comes to a choice between Clinton and Trump, in a swing state, a state where it’s going to matter which way you vote, I would vote against Trump, and by elementary arithmetic, that means you hold your nose and you vote Democrat. I don’t think there’s any other rational choice."

Bernie Sanders is a hero to me, but, you know, no one knows this stuff like Chomsky... his all-seeing view is greater than any U.S. politician. They should all have to debate him before taking office.

If Bernie were in a debate against Chomsky he would get crushed. No one knows about the main currents of Marxism as well as Chomsky does. It only takes a basic understanding of economics and history to know social policies stifle growth in the sector they are implemented. Chomsky enjoys what Bernie stands for, but in regards to his policies Chomsky (even as a leftists) opposes them.
@MinamuTV
@MinamuTV 8 лет назад
That is incorrect. Chomsky said quite frankly in an earlier interview that Sanders was probably "the one with the best policies."
@kenbobcorn

MinamuTV Between Trump, Hillary and Sanders, that is not saying much. When I say he opposes them I'm was more referring to ideologically as oppose to Bernie's specific policies.

The old bag lost any remaining credibility by saying he'd vote for Hillary, when she is the embodiment of the Iraq War, War on Terror, Patriot Act, imperialism, and everything else he has ever pretended to be against.
@Farryknight
@Farryknight 7 лет назад
JustAPerson He realizes that Trump is worse. Trump has openly stated that he would support the a bill even better (which means worse) than the patriot act, he just openly stated recently that he supports stop and frisk. Trump is the biggest proponent for the war on terror as well, he's said that he would bomb the shit out of ISIS, while not a bad thing he's clearly a proponent for the war on terror. Define what you think imperialism is because by definition we will commit an act of imperialism no matter what. Trump also did support the war in Iraq. I'm not even going to touch all the insane things Trump has said with nukes, PTSD, McCain, imitation of a disabled person, lack of policy, the amount of debt his tax plan would burden the US economy with, etc. I would hold my nose and vote Clinton even though I don't like her or even agree with a lot of her social policies but simply because Trump is worse.

Farryknight I was leaning towards Trump over Hillary because I'd personally rather accept right-wing policies for what they are than to accept right-wing policies disguised as left-wing policies, which will only taint the left even further. However, after seeing how things have been playing out, I think I'm starting to hate both equally. What has our constitutional republic come to?

Sorry Noam, I live in Florida and I'm bernie or bust. I'm not accepting the fact that hillary is better than trump just cuz she's a little better on some social issues... she's no good on economic issues or foreign policy. she's a moderate Republican

a moderate republican could be better than a complete wildcard. I am also Bernie or Bust but I'm in California a hard blue state that would never turn red within this decade. @Joelthedon22

+darkJman77 I'm of the opinion that trump doesn't really want to be president. I still believe from the start that his run was a ploy to make the Republicans look as bad as possible to ensure a hillary presidency, that backfired. yes trump is a fascist moron, but I'm sorry, hillary is equally bad in my eyes. there is no lesser of 2 evils. my standards are way too high, so I he wins over her, so be it. I don't buy his schtick anyway. when it comes to florida, I'm definitely heavily engaged. I'm have watched the open debate (and actually was the person who submitted the last video question lol). I'm all for Alan Grayson for the Senate and I've even donated to Tim Canova to beat Debbie Wasserman Schulz

I'm completely against the idea of "holding your nose and voting" for a candidate. The idea of voting is to vote for the candidate you want, not vote against the candidate you don't want. This type of 'choose one or the other' thinking is exactly what the two parties -- Democrats and Republicans -- want people to sink down into. The two parties want everyone to think that there are only two options. This is one way they stay in power. I'll never cast an anti-Trump vote for Hillary. To do this would be to participate in the illusion of democracy the two parties want us to continue to live in.
@darkJman77
@darkJman77 8 лет назад
aslong as the spoiler effect is a thing we have to take it into account. I would MUCH rather have a system of alternative voting (ranked voting) to get rid of the spoiler effect but until we have a new constitutional amendment to change the way we vote for president we have to pick whoever is the least dickish and be more involved in primaries and local elections.
@Gabriel360LIVE
@Gabriel360LIVE 8 лет назад
darkJman77 I feel like the "spoiler effect" is another illusion created by Democrats and Republicans (whichever party happens to be the sore loser at the time) to convince people to vote for either one or the other. For example, when Democrats say that Ralph Nader spoiled the 2000 election for Al Gore, that's the Democrats being sore losers. Nader had every right to run for president and everyone who voted for him had every right to do that (this is called "democracy"). And everyone who voted for Nader did so because they felt that he represented them. If they felt Al Gore represented them, they would've voted for Gore. The fact that Gore wasn't representing them is a fault of Gore, not a fault of Nader. So excluding any candidate because of the "spoiler effect" is yet another way that Democrats and Republicans get you to vote for them and not necessarily someone who represents you. It's definitely a form of manipulation, and the fact that it's entrenched in people's minds shows how well the Democrats and Republicans play to the fears of people in order to stay in power. I do agree with you that ranked voting may be a nice way of making people feel better about voting for candidates that aren't Democrat or Republican, however, I don't think either Democrats or Republicans would allow it simply because it would threaten their shared dominance.
@darkJman77
@darkJman77 8 лет назад
Gabriel360LIVE I wouldn't be so harsh on Democrats as a whole because they have implemented it in in San Francisco and Oakland, California and Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting#United_States On a national scale yes the major parties are against 3rd party candidates from getting involved in the process.
@dmike3507
@dmike3507 8 лет назад
+Gabriel360LIVE But you're not understanding what he's saying. He said that if you're in a SWING STATE, when the vote can go either way, it would be better to vote for Hillary since if you didn't you would effectively be voting FOR Trump. If you're not in a swing state then it doesn't matter, you can vote for your own shit and it's not going to change the outcome. If we had instant runoff voting though this would not be an issue. Remember that people gave Ralph Nader a ton of shit because a large enough proportion of democrats voted for him over Al Gore to allow Bush to win the election. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/how-nader-cost-gore-an-election/2015/02/05/3261cc22-abd2-11e4-8876-460b1144cbc1_story.html
@Gabriel360LIVE
@Gabriel360LIVE 8 лет назад
dmike3507 I'm sorry, but what you've just shown me is how caught up you are in the exact type of thinking I was talking about, the type of thinking Democrats and Republicans want you to have. Even in a swing state, a vote for one candidate is still not a vote for another. If you vote your conscious, you're not voting for the lesser of two evils, you're voting for the candidate that you feel represents you. I heard that dude just fine; you just read my comment from the perspective I was talking about. Until you shed that point of view, and until American sheds that point of view, we'll be stuck with whoever people think is the lesser of two evils and nothing will get better, because the lesser of two evils is still evil.

+BeeFriendlyApiary - I couldn't agree more! To vote along party lines is to silence OURSELVES. Not this voter. That said, I live in Kansas, which is about as far as you can get from being a swing state. But even if I lived in Florida, why should that be used to pressure me to bow to either the Fuhrer or the corrupt corporate machine that is Shillery? People in this country have to STOP giving away their power. We've already lost so much that our forefathers fought for, and we can't afford to lose much more or the fallout will make Trump look like an angel by comparison (and that's definately saying something!).

Given the choice between two bad things, as those bad things get worse absolutely, their relative degree of undesirability between them shrinks compared to their absolute undesirability. So if the choice was between Genghis Khan and Hitler, what's the point in choosing? At some point as that ratio gets smaller, you have to reject the set of choices altogether even if doing so means you have to suffer a short term loss. . Chomsky is correct in the limited sense that Hillary presents some slim, theoretical projected benefit over Trump. But only in the short term. We have to think about the next election cycle and how the DNC will reckon their responsibility to satisfy the progressive demand next time around. If you want the DNC to take that demand seriously, you have to start tearing at the party right now. If the oligarchs always know what we will do they will always win. You have to act crazy and unpredictable sometimes. Something else to consider is that Hillary is more likely to last 8 years than is Trump who is more likely to be impeached, primaried, or die. Hillary also figures to be more effective and get more things done- not good if you are against her agenda. And when it comes to the biggest threat, I don't see how it is worse to run the ecocide under Trump or walk to it under Clinton- either way it's ecocide. That means if there is a 1% chance that supporting, fully, a third party candidate will give the environment a chance then we should take it as it represents the best chance.

She won't be reelected. Mark my words. When has a single party held office for over a dozen years? Not since Truman, and he barely won against Dewey. Vote Trump, wait for the 15, 16, 17 yr old progressives to come of age and elect another TRUE PROGRESSIVE, be it Elizabeth Warren, or that guy from Ohio, maybe even Bernie again in 2020. + then again My baseline for judging Hillary is Obama. Using him as a relative measure I don't see her being pliable to popular movements as she is clearly to the right of Obama who has been a miserable failure from a progressive standpoint. It seems like a lot of people I talk to are comparing Hillary to Nixon in several aspects. I wasn't alive yet when Nixon was president, but I have read up on his record and don't think we need anyone like him ever again. Heavy handed application of the Kissinger philosophy to Syria and Iran at this point would seem to be adding pressure to a powder keg. I think a lot of Trump's offensive ideas are non-starters. I would almost be willing to gamble that he just won't get anything done rather than stand witness to Hillary implementing a pernicious and venal agenda with surgical precision.

Hillary v Trump reminds me of George Carlin's skit about how we are never offered real choices, not viable ones anyway. The candidates are always vetted by the establishment and a real outlier has no chance. The strongest 3rd party candidate in our lifetime was Ross Perot and all he did was help get Bubba elected. Bernie has done better than most but he also caved to the PTB early on by promising to support the eventual nominee. Nader called him out on that too. Gave up most of his leverage right there and then. So Trump v Hillary, paper or plastic, coke or pepsi, tide or cheer, ford or chevy, sugar or sweet n low. Business as usual in the greatest.......har.... democracy in the world.

If you did something about it, you would know that he would support Sanders,, but all you see is that he, and rightfully so, does not support Trump or Hillary, because they are just two different expressions of insanity, as far as putting them in the White House! The logic behind saying Chomsky should choose between the two, is like saying there are two guns in front of you -a 45 and a 38, and it really doesn't matter what gun you are going you shoot yourself with does it! I don't want to shoot myself with either! Damn, if either of these 2 get in the White House, I just may have to choose between a 38 or 45!

It's true that both Trump and Clinton will be decidedly awful in terms of militarism and the environment, but nobody can tell me Clinton won't be the better of the two even in those arenas, if for no other reason that to not alienate her base should she seek a second term. Of course a Trump presidency would be an absolute disaster for minorities, women and the LGBT community in the immediate future as well. Refusing to vote for her out of sheer idealism is to some extent admirable, but consider how devastating a Trump presidency would be on all fronts, particularly for minorities. Voting for Clinton is living to fight another day, not a statement of allegiance. Not voting against Trump is accepting defeat. Stubbornness against strategy will end the same way every time. The ethical bankruptcy is on the Bernie or Bust crowd, not those of us willing to compromise when there is no other humane option.

Trump is a climate change denier. Hillary accepts the reality of climate change, but profits come first for her. Luckily, she has some wealthy supporters who are dedicated to the environment, and they will be part of her decisions. In that way, she will be better than Trump. As for foreign policy issues, all bets are off. Hillary loves the military industrial complex. Trump isn't as much of an interventionist, but would start a war, simply because someone offends him. According to this very creepy equation, Hillary is the better choice.

@harrisonsnellgrove8843
@harrisonsnellgrove8843 8 лет назад
+Asenueh the problem is the vast majority of voters do not vote for congress/ senatorial staff. Voter turn out is historically low for these, with some even voting against their own presidential candidate in tandem. I.e voting dem on the presidential, and rep on everything else due to whatever "feeing" they have at the time or out of innocent ignorance. The education system of this country is 100% to blame here, growing up in Texas the only political information I was given throughout all of my years in public education system was via the Internet(which I am extremely lucky to be born in such an age). Millennials are arguably more politically active due to their exposure to alternative media thus forming strong opinions against established mainstream propaganda. This wasn't the case 20 years ago or more due to the inability for information to be spread so easily. Until we partition some sort of unbiased political curriculum we will be stuck in a cycle of apathy.

One can also earn four hours of college credit for participation. Sad to hear Chomsky buy into the "a vote for (third party) candidate C is actually a vote for candidate B (when candidate A really needs to win)" line of thinking. In this election, candidate C is in the Libertarian Party, and draws votes from both sides. That's one point that I've been confused on with Chomsky: he talks about how corrupt gov't is, but supports big gov't candidates, when I believe that we'd be better served seeking those who want to sever the corrupt connections between gov't and big business (Ag, Pharna, Mil-Industrial, etc.).

I lost all respect for Chomsky when he was so rude and dismissive and insulting to a young man at one of his lectures who asked him quite respectfully about 9/11 Truth. While Chomsky is entitled to his opinion as all of us are, he took the coward's path of avoiding any evidence or providing any support for his position while ridiculing this young man merely seeking truth, justice, and closure. If you demand the luxury of being unaccountable for your position, you've no right to demand any better from anyone else. He was one of the earliest to speak out against the theft of our civil liberties post-9/11, but is a staunch apologist of the Lie. I'm not surprised he would support Clinton or propagate the intentionally deceptive lesser-of-two-evils myth. I'm done with all liars.

While these men were initially arrested in connection to the case on September ll only hours after the attack, ultimately the US authorities only deported them back to Israel, and there is no known documentation of the lengthy questioning they were put to while in custody.

Think about two words; "Democracy and Republican". Democracy is when 51% rules over the loosing 49%. Not really a good model for a large country. So many do not get a say. Then think about Republican. Thats a collective of people from different republics of the larger country trying to work together. Following the constitution. I like that better. Democracy leaves out too many people. The Republic works for all.
@larryf2821
@larryf2821 8 лет назад
We live in a Democratic Republic, so there you are. Originally there was a Democratic Republican party which split into two, but the two names don't represent their ideologies. BTW, "Republican" means not having a monarch, but an elected leader. Different parts of a nation working together is called Federalism.
@HarryS77
@HarryS77 8 лет назад
I have never heard anyone use the word "collective" to describe a republic. Ever. You might want to consider that the founders made the same argument you did. They feared the "tyranny of the majority" against the few with wealth and property, so they established a republic wherein the propertied class would have the largest say in how the country is run. They were the enlightened men, the most fit to run the country, and it was the job of the electorate to decide which of them was most fit to represent them. The underlying problem with that early republican theory is, if people are intelligent and fit enough to select leaders, why could they not be leaders themselves? From their perspective, republicanism is a kind of aristocracy, meaning "most fit to rule," absent a monarch or feudal economics. From the outset the republican system was designed to cut certain people out and to concentrate power in the hands of the wealthy few and provide protection for property against the many poor who would try to redistribute that wealth more equitably.

You know what always pisses me off about this point? It NEVER emphasizes the other point, which is if you don't live in a swing state vote for Jill Stein or write in Sanders! Why is there never any talk when this part of 3rd party voting comes up that reflects that there are only 9 swing states? Most states are NOT swing states. In fact the vast majority of states are not swing states. 41 out of 50 states are not swing states. Why is there NEVER any reflection on that point? Noam Chomsky is essentially saying, whether you agree with the point or not, that he thinks you should not vote for Hillary if you don't live in a swing state and chances are you don't. Why does the title of every single one of these videos always emphasize what people in swing states should do according to Chomsky but never what he is saying conversely you should if you don't live in a swing state as is the case with the vast majority of the electorate? I believe when you don't emphasize that most states are NOT swing states it leaves people with the impression that most states are in fact swing states and thus most people follow along based on the incorrect assumption that they live in a swing state without bothering to check.
