Chondrosarcomas are rare, slow-growing skull-based tumors that can be locally aggressive. Diagnosis involves imaging, and treatment primarily includes surgical resection.
The video covers information about chondrosarcomas, which are rare skull-based tumors that arise from cartilage cells in the bone. It discusses the symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatment options (surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy), complications, and prognosis for these slow-growing but locally aggressive tumors that can recur after initial resection.
In this video, we cover:
🧠 Rare Tumors: Chondrosarcomas affect 1 in 200,000 per year, primarily in adults aged 40-70.
🚨 Symptoms: Common symptoms include headaches, visual problems, and balance issues.
🔍 Diagnosis: CT and MRI scans are essential for evaluating tumor extent and planning treatment.
🏥 Treatment Options: Surgical resection is the primary treatment, often combined with radiation.
⚠️ Surgical Challenges: Surgery can lead to complications like brain fluid leaks and nerve damage.
🌟 Survival Rates: Approximately 80-90% of patients maintain functional status at five years post-treatment.
🤝 Expert Care: Treatment requires experienced neurosurgeons and oncologists to ensure the best outcomes.

Key moments:
00:00:39 Introduction to Chondrosarcomas -The speaker introduces himself as a neurosurgeon and explains that chondrosarcomas are very rare skull-based tumors arising from cartilage cells in the bone.
00:01:18 Epidemiology and Symptoms -Chondrosarcomas are very rare, affecting approximately 1 in 200,000 patients per year or 1 in a million people. They are more commonly seen in older adults between the ages of 40 and 70.
00:02:11 Diagnostic Tests -The diagnostic tests typically used for chondrosarcomas include computed tomography (CT) scans to evaluate the bone of the skull or spine, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to review the soft tissues around the bone and assess the extent of the tumor around the brain.
00:02:41 Treatment Options - The treatment options for chondrosarcomas include surgical resection (the primary and preferred treatment), radiation therapy (external beam radiation or proton beam therapy), and chemotherapy (rarely used, typically for advanced disease).
00:04:31 Complications and Prognosis - Potential complications of transnasal surgery for chondrosarcomas include brain fluid leak through the nose, loss of bowel or brain function, loss of sexual function, pituitary function failure, numbness, movement problems, double vision, or other cranial nerve abnormalities.

Hello doctor! My brother (38 years) got a painless tumor like soft tissue in ankle 5 years back. He visited a doctor and doctor declares it harmless soft tisse so he ignored and kept it. After 5 years tumor started growing and later he got pain. So he did MRI and biopsy test . Now we got to know that it is extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma. Will it be curable ? Please reply.
