Wow! A cook watching my videos 😄 I'm honored. Hainanese + Cook.. immediately reminds me of Hainanese Pork Chop rice 😄 where Western food is made better in Asia. Haha.. apologies for making that association.. maybe you're a French Cuisine Chef 😀

Bad experience with Seng Kee Bak Kut Teh! Went there to order a bowl of BKT and a portion of pig trotter with 2 bowls of rice for myself. Was surprised to see double portions of the food @ $21.50 so reminded the old lady who took my order and the man (boss?) that I cannot finish so much as food only for myself. Both were soooo cocky and rude: told me off that for 2 bowls of rice they will give double portion. What??? So I insisted but they said that in that case I will not get the trotters! Will not go there even if they were the last ones around !

Piggypuggy, ooohhhh, this video brings back soooo many memories, especially that spice store with Markus, 3rd generation owner. When I was a kid, I always tag along with my Mom to the Tiong Bahru wet market. She always stop by that indian curry paste store owned by an old Indian man. His curry paste was to die for and this store is exactly like that old Indian man's curry paste stall. He practically has everything you need, just tell him what curry you want to make - mutton, chicken, sotong, fish,.....- he will extract the appropriate spice paste mix for you. That is what this young man is doing. My Mom makes the best curry because of that old Indian man's spice mix. Gosh, I really miss this kind of store and it is really a niche! This is an excellent find as it makes cooking curry so easy. 👍😜 My other favorite is the provision store that has so many goodies - nice chunks and different varieties of tofu, noodles, bao, bak chang, achar, nice kuehs and pastries, really a wonderful one-stop shop! A big cup of soy bean drink for only S$1? Unreal...I love mee siam, always hits the spot! Another good one, thanks for the entertainment, appreciate your efforts.😊🤣👍🤣😁
@Piggypuggy
@Piggypuggy 2 года назад
Haha.. As a kid.. I hated goin to Tiong Bahru market.. it’s always wet and stuffy and noisy.. all those squeeze lanes filled with Chinese kiam chai and other preserved food smells. Aunties bags of wet sticky meats and fish keep brushing against me.. 😂🤣😅 how did it turn out that this kid who disliked wet markets end up with such a passion??? My favourite has gotta be 1. The yu char kway man making you tiao. 2. The fresh chicken umm.. coz I was both emotionally disturbed at how chickens were processed and yet I want to see it.. fishballs were my go to then.. followed by waiting at the Kopi stall aluminium chairs 😄 with packets of produce next to me.. it’s funny how our childhood brings back much memories.. These days not many of the mee generations learn to cook. Restaurants are just everywhere.. plus the stressful worklife of couples usually doesn’t encourage too much of such cooking culture and habits to be cultivated. Including myself who’s a total alien at cooking Asian dishes. I only started filming because it suddenly occured to me that all these things will really be gone forever in maybe 10years max.. most are already in their late 60s

Used to visit Kwai Luck regularly for mee siam. Hope the uncle is okay. I always add more mee siam 😅. Also regularly buy the pig trotters for my mom, she loves it. Basically, you covered the only 2 stalls that I frequent. 😄 But the cha bee hoon looks good 😋

For years I’ve been having nothin but mee siam.. you char kway.. and maybe some mixed bee Hoon from there. 😅 it’s like there’s no need to try the rest unless mee Siam is like sold out. It was actually my first time trying the Bak Kut Teh stall.. but it will certainly be on my list every time round from now onwards

Piggy mate, is there a term I can use with hawkers that gets across the idea of "Please give me some good food. You know, like what a lot of the locals enjoy"? "I don't have any allergies, religious hang ups or other such fussiness. I just want some good normally priced food!"
@Piggypuggy
@Piggypuggy 2 года назад
Haha Mark.. I can see you're such an enthusiat when it comes to trying hawker food.. I can advise you when you're here.. but honestly.. I think you'll get by just fine.. just walk around to see what others are eating.. or lining up for.. when it's your turn.. you can just point to what others are having.. or show them a pic of the plate you saw earlier.. chances are.. most will be able to speak some form of simple English. Like.. this one? That one? Yes? No? That's how I survived in Japan.. usually the only alien in a local izakaya.. I'd be pointing to whatever others are having.. or I'll just take a wild card and have whatever is served to me 😄
