I love both of your insights. Having Mari share her thoughts (and not just be the usual "assistant"... of course she is more than that hehe :D ) is so fresh in your videos.

You are so right! Mari is so much more than my assistant. She is a bit shy but I think with comments like yours we can make her participate more 😃 thank you 🙏

I am a sucker for bonsai pots. I'm extremely picky when choosing a pot for a tree that I'm working on. That's also because I'm a graphic designer. I tend to go for the more modern, minimally designed pots. I'm not really crazy about pots that have too many decorations.

Hey Frank, don't give up! Most everybody's first bonsai doesn't survive so you are not alone. Keep trying!

This is my idea, Cersent pot is best for bonsai like pine , rain tree, acacia, tamarind as l feel these trees look cool on slops or clifs .Even if tamarind acacia and Raintree is grown like a umbrella canopy will look good. It also shows how a tree survives in an unforgiving terrain. What do you think?

Good topic. I would go with square straight lines on a pot with masculine tree and oval pot for a feminine tree. Also i think nakas book explaines something like using the foilage and choosing a pot thats opposite the color spectrum but like u guys say use whatever fits ur style!. He also describes like u said the length and width should accomodate how tall and wide the tree is. Great videos keep em coming.and thanks for all ur help with my questions when emailing u guys!

Hey Chris, I agree with you. Match or contrast is the way to go. But every tree and scenario is different. I think one should be open and creative when choosing a pot. Any time, we are here for you!

I chose my normal jade to be in a red-ish rectangular pot as well. I thought it would compliment the red outlines on the leaves really well.

I would pick orange for just about every bonsai since its my fav color. I would alternate orange & black pots depending on if its deciduous or evergreen

Would be a great discussion topic for the bonsai suplly facebook group. First of all, i agree that choosing a pot is up to everyone's individual taste. My goal is not to imitate Japanese Bonsai. I want create my own trees in my own style. And i like to be influenced by many different styles. Here are guidelines (not rules) i usually go for. But i am always open to make something different unique. 1. colour: a) conifers -> brown / earth colours b) deciduous --> color should match, complement or contrast the colors of the tree (bark, leaves, buds, flowers, fruits) in at least one season of the year. 2. size: a) When i go for vigorous growth, i would not put the tree in a small pot, rather in a big plastic container or in the ground b) thickness of the trunk correlates the height of the pot c) The crown should extend over the messures of the pot 3. form: a) rectangular -> masculine tree b) oval -> feminine tree c) round -> trees you are trying to look good from every side or literaty style trees d) square pots -> i don't like :D (only when they are cascade pots) e) six or eight-sided pots for special trees. p.e. slender ones with fat bases, feminine trees

Umm I want that orange pot it’s awesome and loud. Maple / Bouganvilia / larch-tamarack / and maybe a ginko would look good in that pot

Hello great video. So the color of the pot is a matter of taste. The size and shape deals with size, type and canopy of the tree. Just by imagining how the tree will look like will depend on the pot be used. Uff gat it is fun. Or by availability of pots you have. Thanks.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply

You got it, Manuel! There are some rules in place but we like to refer to them as guidelines.

Great video. Would love to hear more about masculine vs feminine pots and also how the size of feet affect choice also.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 3 года назад
Hey Victor, thank you! I would say feet size, height, and shape is equal to how to choose the shape of the pot. A very big and heavy tree in a big heavy pot needs big heavy feet. If your tree is formal upright and is pointy, the feet may be pointy as well. You can also match the feet with leaf shape, or canopy shape. Masculine pots are more squarish, a rectangle with a bigger lip and heavy feet. Feminine pots are thinner, smaller feet, smaller lip, more oval, and rounded.

Thank you! That tree is not even close to being done growing and thickening. We mentioned in the video that it is perfectly fine to use the end pot as a grow pot.

Choosing a pot traditionally depends on the trees gender , round for female or more feminine trees and square for male trees or trees that are more masculine.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 3 года назад
Hey Pedro, are you referring to if your tree is more masculine or feminine looking? Lots of trees are both sex. If so I agree with you completely. I did mention in the video that I mostly like to use a square or rectangle pot with big heavy masculine looking trees.
