This was chock full of really good info to consider when selecting your location. But I cannot stress enough the need for good advertising in and around the venue, no matter where it is!

I love the topic, and once again, your insights are very helpful! A cornerstone of my vendor events is THE VENUE, with food and beverages typically available onsite from the host facility, such as golf courses and event centers. In my opinion, having events in a business setting is crucial for the success of events. It adds significant value for other businesses seeking new and unique event opportunities and helps cross-market crafters and small businesses with venues designed for hosting events. I strongly encourage vendors not to overlook these often smaller and unique venue choices when selecting shows.

A great venue can send an event to new heights. Especially if it has a big reputation in the area already. Being able to say, "hey my craft fair is at _____" and having that alone spark people's interest goes a long way in helping the marketing of the event.

Do you think it’s reasonable to ask vendors to not add anything to the trash cans? Should we carry everything out? I have done but seems a little extreme.

No definitely not. That’s a really strange rule to put on the vendors.

For outdoor events, please keep in mind wind and rain, as well as the sun play a huge factor in how a vendor sets up their tent. We need a 12x12 space for a 10x10 tent. Why? Because strong winds will billow any sidewalls, move hanging displays, and risk damage to neighbors items. That 1 foot is the only buffer we have against acts of nature. I've been to more than one show where a vendor's beautiful setup was knocked over and their art destroyed when the neighboring tent "blew up" from a sudden micro-burst. The 1 foot between tents also allows vendors to shimmy between to drop sidewalls without harming their neighbors if it suddenly begins to rain. Reserved parking for vendors is another huge issue. Many of us drive oversized vehicles, making parking difficult at the best of times, but almost impossible in downtown areas where parking is at a premium. Please work with the city and police to reserve a lot for vendor parking. I've refused to return to at least one major venue because the new organizers told us we were "on your own" to find parking, and the city placed "No Parking / Towing Enforced" signs on several streets that would have been perfect for us. I ended up parking along a residential street a good 10 minute walk away and stressed about being towed the entire event.

@@howtocraftfair I ate up your series of booth critiques when they first came out to help improve my own setup. Thank you for sharing those. This comment was my way of paying back your generosity by providing POV insight on issues few organizers seem to consider. Hope it helps!

What is the best way to approach a venue?

Usually by car - haha no I’m just kidding what’s up Kathy! 😃 I would always try and do email inquiries because you want to try and have things in writing so that you avoid any kind of “he said/she said” scenarios. Getting things in writing - even basic conversations - is always a good idea. Great question!
