My Uncle works in the mattress industry and gave me a tip for my friends. Mattress stores have huge mark-ups because of the overhead to have a physical store, commissions to salesmen, and the owners cut. His advice.... you get the most for your money buying at 1- Sam's Club, 2- Big Lots, 3- Costco or Bjs, 4- Walmart. The return policy is zero cost at all these places, and of equal quality at half the cost.

When choosing a mattress the first thing you should realize is that they don't make them like they used to. Avoid buying a pillow top as it won't take long before it develops a dip.

Definitely tough to purchase a mattress these days, thanks for adding a bit of clarity!

This is informative. However you should look into a handful of factory direct mattress makers such as Charles P. Rogers or Yankee Mattress which a small local maker in western MA. Many consumers don't realize this is an option in most metropolitan areas. Sales are less frequent because there is minimal markup and advertising costs compared to brand names or big box retailers. You can often customize to your specifications as well.

Not mentioned: Some firms, like Sealy, have clearance outlets with mismatches always at sale prices.

I am a small store in a small town. Never buy an unknown mattress, even mattress makers buy parts in bulk. Small companies buy parts at a higher price than the national brands. National brands clearly do a better job making a mattress than some unknown maker. Find a store that has low overhead and no commissioned staff. Use your smart phone and google the brand and the style name, the reviews will be informative. Good luck.

i weigh 280 pounds i got my first "good" mattress for $600 it started to develop a body impression after a week. No return policy. So I threw it in the garbage. Got another mattress $800 same problem. Threw it away back on my old mattress and out 1400 dollars

When you are a larger, heavier person, you need MORE support...and more support is not the lower end, cheaper models. Big people need to step up and buy a high quality sleeping surface. The sales people where you bought your bed could have educated you on this point, unless you were insisting on paying less.

Do yourselves a favor and use Amazon and eBay to find well rated memory foam mattress sellers. 12" 5lb gel foam mattresses can be had for under 400 dollars for a queen sized and 500 for king. I've owned mine for almost 10 years and it was one of the best investments I've ever made.

Would love to see intelliBED compared to these mattresses. Can you add a gel mattress into the study. IntelliBED seems to be a better solution to many sleep problems.

What is the point of showing the testing if you don't show the results!? What a pointless video.

There's no such thing as a 50% markdown from the original selling price. There wouldn't be any profit therefore making selling mattresses a silly endeavor. You CAN from time to time get 50% off manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP). MSRP is a reference number and if you do your homework get the best deal possible. There are great selling ambassadors in the mattress business and some not so. Let your gut guide you. When in doubt, RUN!

Temperpidic best money ive ever spent but it did hurt to fork over that kind of cash for something I sleep on then i found out u spend like 20% of your life sleeping which is alot of time in bed. it has a 10year warranty the next best is the Sleepnumber which last longer but u have to know that the aircompressors that air up the tubs will go bad before the tubs themselves so u will have to replace the compressors which means no bed to sleep on but both are best on market. TEMPERPIDIC SLEEPNUMBER

I'm betting that you're a mattress salesman. Mattresses are so overpriced that you can haggle the price down to lower than 50% of the advertised price without breaking a sweat.

Best advice of all: Wait for the sale. And never pay more than 50% of the list price. Never. These mattress sellers are rag merchants. Don't buy without a haggle and never pay more than 50% of the advertised regular list price.

Hey, they only say 50 per cent off to lure you in, then continue to lie to you until they have your money. best thing to do is spend countless hours off educating yourself on mattresses and the sales system before buying. Try videos from ' The Beducator ' , there you will be educated from one of the rare honest men in the business. Good luck with your purchase

I work for a large chain of mattress stores. We NEVER have 50% off, unless its a floor model or clearance. We don't mark our beds up that high. Big chain department stores do, mattress retailers do not. FYI people. Customers that come in looking for this or making these kind of statements will not get anywhere. In fact, most of us will "walk" you.
@alfalfa

Becki Holt What do you mean walk? Walk us out of the store? Fine get paid by suckers.
@beckiholt7178
@beckiholt7178 9 лет назад
That's exactly what I mean. We try to explain this to the guest, and If they are unreasonable, we will cut you loose. Politely.
@c.9231
@c.9231 6 лет назад
I don't know which chain you work for, however, the majority of them do and the largest of them, definitely does have tremendous, unreasonable markups. It is blatantly obvious to anyone who shops around first! Also, when the consumer tries to walk, the salesperson does come down in price. First they will try to sell you their financing plan (more money in their pocket), then they will try to sell you that model only returned by a previous consumer and now housed in their clearance warehouse after being "treated" with disinfectant. Then they will come down in price but it may still be more than what you could pay elsewhere. We don't care whether you want our business or not. We want what's best for us, the best product at the best price and often that means we walk out on you!

I can't believe ConsumerReports is advocating for the "fake sales" all these resellers have. If its on sale 365 days a year is it really a sale? How about save your money by cutting out the middle man and buy factory direct. What about double-sided beds? Why would you buy a bed (or tires) that you couldn't rotate? This report is such a joke. Sounds like one of the S (Serta, Sealy, Simmons) companies wrote this piece.

I suppose you want business to make zero money and then they go out of business.

This is pretty useless ... it just says you are going to get screwed so do not pay full price. I expected more from Consumer Reports.
