If you've had your DSLR camera for any length of time, you've probably grown beyond just using the kit lens. Or, maybe you got just the camera body and need to figure out what lens to go with. Whatever the case may be, this video will help you choose your next lens from the HUNDREDS that are out there and spend that hard earned cash with peace of mind. Hopefully after watching this, you will have a better idea of what to look for in a lens, can better understand what their lens names mean, and make a wise purchase!

This was recorded with a Canon EOS Rebel T3i (600D) running Magic Lantern, with a Canon EF 35mm f/2, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens (nifty 50), Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III, and the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II (kit lens). We used the Faithful picture style and ran it with 3x bit rate for more room in grading. It was edited in Premiere Pro CS6, noise removal with Neat Video, and color graded using Color Finesse in After Effects CS6 along with a few grading tools in AE.

I'd recommend the 35mm f/2.0 mentioned in this video. It will give you a wide viewing angle and does well at high speeds or low light

Man, good luck on that one. Since those YT algorithms changed with the recent layout design, it's tough...Just gotta get published on one of those giant forums or news sites...

Honestly, if you have the kit lens already, it can work fine with the right camera settings. Outside you're using the "sunny 16" baseline with a 180-degree shutter adjustment (ISO 100, f/22, 1/50th or 1/60th sec). You can get a 0.6 ND filter (2-stops darker) for about $15, which would open up the possibility to use Highlight Tone Priority (prevents blown-out highlights, but has a minimum of ISO200) and f/16 (sharper image since it's not at the extreme end of the lens's capability).

Dang, was hoping I'd explained it well enough...there's just so much to it and so many different cameras and lenses. You have a 60D, so I'd recommend the 35mm f/2 if you want low light...I'm loving mine and all the "studio" shots that weren't about it were using it.
@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 11 лет назад
If you can afford it, I'd say go for the 35mm f/2...it rarely leaves my camera body. It's great in most lighting conditions, pleasant bokeh, has a great viewing angle for the crop-sensor cameras, and is a great quality build. The 50mm f/1.8 would be my 2nd recommendation. The price is much better than the 35mm, but you get a lower build quality with it and a more "zoomed in" angle. It rarely left my camera after I got it, and, mainly did because I needed a wider viewing angle.

Thanks man! Time lapse is great stuff! I like how it has a different feel and perspective than regular speed. I have a power grip with an intervalometer. You can also use Magic Lantern, if your camera supports it.

Bokeh is caused by several factors: wider aperture (lower f-number/AV), higher the focal length (more zoomed in), and the distance between what's in focus and out of focus (have the subject as close to the camera as possible and the background as far back as possible). That being said, I'm not sure how much better the bokeh will be when comparing 18mm f/3.5 to 55mm f/5.6, considering that the aperture gets smaller as the focal length gets longer, but my guess is that the 55mm will look better.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Everything makes so much more sense. I just got the designated novice camera... jk but the very popular t3i rebel. And I got the kit lens and a 75-300 Mark III.. all for like 649 + a bag and stuff.. Im super excited but I might have to grab that nifty fifty. Ive seen that term several times throughout researching and nvr knew what it meant. Sounds like a great value and the reviews from vendors reassures that. Thanks again!

It's hard to beat the 50mm for the price, but I'd say go for the 35mm if you can afford it. To me, the 35mm gives the "expected" viewing angle on the crop factor cameras. Plus the focus ring is large and smooth, so it'll work great if you ever get a follow focus. The 50mm focus ring is small and feels gritty, so manual focusing during video isn't the greatest. That being said, the 50mm has a bit more cinematic feel to me, but is just too zoomed in most of the time on the crop factor cameras.
@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 11 лет назад
Your prime lenses will have a marginally sharper image and somewhat better colors. At 3 meters with a crop sensor camera like the 550D, I'd probably recommend the 35mm f/2 featured in this video. It will work well during the day and even as it gets dark. I'd also recommend the Faithful picture style or possibly even Landscape for color pop. You can turn on Highlight Tone Priority, but on a sunny day, you'd probably need an ND filter since you're locked in at ISO200.

The 35mm might seem a bit "zoomed out" on the full-frame camera and the 50mm might feel a bit "zoomed in" on the crop sensor camera. The 50mm will be slightly better in low light and it will give you about the same viewing angle on the full-frame as the 35mm does on the crop sensor. Working in tight quarters with a 50mm on a crop-sensor camera will be tough, but if you want to just buy one lens, I'd recommend it overall.

Being that they're similarly priced, both have great reviews, but the Tamron one has more features and a seemingly better build quality, I'd go with it. Though you might want to check out some photos from both, just to be sure. I own the Canon one and it starts having more chromatic abberation the further you zoom it...not sure about the Tamron.
@8bitdigitaltv

Sorry, missed the part about the 85mm...it might be your best bet, even if you do it at 55mm, the max f-number will probably be around f/4.5, which would be wider than the kit at the same focal length.

D White until I got my 35mm, I used it pretty much exclusively, now I use the 35mm 90% of the time, the 50mm 7% of the time, and the zoom lens the rest of the time. I got a chance to shoot on a 6D recently (a full-frame camera) and it was more 65% 50mm and 35% 35mm. Excellent camera, btw.

The reviews look similar and the price is about the same. It looks like the Tamron one has the focusing distance printed on it and seems to be a higher build quality on the outside. I'm not sure what the macro mode does other than make it to where you can get closer to focus (3 feet instead of 4.5 feet). Also, the Tamon goes down to f/32, (the Canon stops at f/22), which will allow more things to be in focus in your macro shots, but requires more light at those higher stops.

im a fashion blogger/youtuber and finally making the switch to dslr i want to buy a t3i and the 35mm was recommended to me however its more expensive to buy the body without the kit lens im really torn between the 50 and the 35 mainly cause of the price also can i do the "hollywood look" you mentioned in the video on a 35mm . so what do you recommend cause $98 to $238 is a jump
@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 10 лет назад
It's more expensive to buy the camera separately from the kit lens, but not to just buy the body. But anyway, I bought the mine with the kit lens, then got the 50mm, then the 35mm. I'd say that the kit lens got me decently far, it just stinks in low light. The 50mm great in low-light, but is not practical to use in small/med rooms, especially if you're wanting to get more of your body in the shot than just your head. This is why the 35mm stays on my camera 95% of the time. I haven't used my kit lens since making this video...and that was just to compare it to the other lenses, lol. So, as long as low light isn't an issue, the kit lens will hold you for a while, but it's really hard to beat the 35mm, even at that price.

Fantastic video. However what would you say now... The 50mm 1.8 = 75 mm, whilst the 35mm would equal the 50mm (crop sensor etc) Im seeing the 35mm for £200 compared to the £75-90 price tag for the 50mm... What I'm basically looking for is a wide angle lense for the 650d, so I think the 35mm would be the best bet ? (my focus is on making films etc...)

@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 11 лет назад
All that to say, those are MY recommendations. The question you must ask yourself is: What annoys you about the kit lens? Or, what does it feel like it's missing that you need? Does it not let enough light in? Does it not zoom in enough? Does it not have a shallow enough depth of field? The answers to these will help you figure out what to look for in your next lens.

Unfortunately, the only way to get USM is to shell out the extra dough and buy a lens that already has USM. It's part of the inner workings and gears of the lens itself and therefore cannot be fixed by an extension or filter. Sorry....

I'm looking to buy a wide angle lens for those more 'epic' film style shots, what would you recommend?
@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 10 лет назад
It really depends on what camera you have. But my basic answer would be the 50mm mentioned in this video if you have a full-frame sensor camera and/or a tight budget, or the 35mm if you have crop sensor camera. Ironically, often times in movies they use longer lenses for more compression (like an 85mm or larger), but if you're wanting a wider shot, the 35 or 50mm should be good.

Thanks for the video. I am shooting with a 70D and the reason for my frustration with the kits lenses is that the images are not sharp enough and they create all sorts of chromatic aberrations and distortion to the point that Camera Raw cannot completely fix them. I am interested in the Canon EF 50 mm and 35 mm you mentioned, but do they also have the same kind of problems? Is the glass of better quality than the kit zoom lenses?
@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 10 лет назад
To me it seems to be a better quality...they're definitely sharper and the chromatic aberration is not as bad. One thing I find when removing CA is that just checking the box doesn't do it, nor does jacking up the amount all the way. For me, I usually end up making both CA removal channels use the entire available spectrum and then raise the amount on both to like 3 or 4...does the trick almost every time. Oh, and the telephoto zoom lens I demoed in this video is probably the worst of the bunch when it comes to having CA...not sure if the more expensive version does or not though.

hey man...comment slipped through the cracks, sorry... I don't think the 7D supports STM focusing, but for the 7D any lens that supports USM will be better than ones without. However, it'd probably be best to learn how to manually focus for video, so a lens with a decent-sized focus ring.

Hey Ray, I am looking to replace the stock lens on my Canon T3I. I mainly use the camera to record video about 4-6 feet from the subject. I would like a sharper, more professional image. (Assuming I already have an Ideal lighting setup) What would you recommend?
@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 10 лет назад
35mm, hands-down. It rarely comes off my T3i. The 50mm is significantly cheaper and about the same sharpness and about the same low-light and shallow focus, but it's often too "zoomed in", especially in the 4-6 ft range. Also, the build quality makes the 35mm well worth the extra cost, if you have the money for it.Since the kit lens covers both sizes in it's zoom range, what you can do is set the zoom to 35mm (I believe there's a mark for it) and film for a few hours or a day. Then set the zoom to 50mm (depending on your lens, I believe the mark is at 55mm, which is close enough, or you can estimate where 50mm would be from there) and film for another few hours or a day. Then determine which one you need from there.
@shizazzz
