It’s a bittersweet job that must be done every year. Some of these cows I’ll miss and some...not so much! Come along with me this week as I explain my cull selections and haul them to auction!
Grandma cow was over 18. But they kept her. She lived a long life. Remember being told she was over 18. Don't remember when they told me. But, she stayed and helped the heifers calving. Whenever they were calving and acted nervous, she would go stay with them and nuzzle, lick them until the heifers calmed. After birthing, when the new mom went to eat hay, Grandma Cow would stand over the new calf. When she died, all the cows in the pasture stood around her in a circle all day. I was watching as she laid by the fence.
So appreciate how you show that raising, breeding and taking care of cattle is truly challenging. But that in the end it's a business and choices have to be made.
Do you think he had a buyer lined up, or did he ship them off to the auction house? I hope they brought a good price because the auction house might take 15%.
As always, you make this look so easy. Looks like you made some pretty good choices on who goes & who stays. Every cow has to make you $ in some way. If they don't . . . they have to go. I was really looking forward to seeing Mrs. FTR & your daughter.
Your cows really look good. You take really good care of your cows. Very wise to send poor temperment and cows that are hard to get with calf. Thank you for the videos, great to see.
Another good video. We small ranchers tend to get a little sentimental about our cows but at the end of the day it still needs to be run as a business.
Great job Tyler. The more you do it, the easier it is, and you're gonna improve your herd. You need to reduce your cow size. You got some big dang cows man! You'll love your new calves.
Saucy Mommas! That brought a chuckle. They did load easy. Glad for you. Nice little ride with your mrs. And miss. Your channel is a bright spot in my day!
I’ve learned a lot from you Tyler! I’m just starting my little herd of 5 bred cows! Hopefully one day I’ll be at the point where I have to cull some!! 👍🏽
Your effort in upgrading the corral definitely paid off. Some of those girls sure looked wide...Like many others, I too hate the trip to Galt, never fun!! Another good video, another good day on the FTR.
Another good video...they're all good! No better way to enjoy that first cup of coffee, than to cull cows with FTR. This year I raised 3 hogs, broiler chicks and hens. Next year a butcher steer will be added. Nothing like animals. Always enjoy your videos. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year
@@farmertylerranch4399 I agree! We raised 4 hogs this year and did all the processing ourselves. It's so nice to look in the freezer & see it full knowing our hard work has paid off.
Great video informative entertaining well done. Culling cows is one of the toughest jobs for me and as I get older it just gets harder. Watching them being born develop and become a valued part of the herd then saying good bye is just well you know. Even the ones that cause trouble are sometimes missed even though you know they couldn't stay. But, then it starts a over again the excitement of calving season watching them grow and play. Soon you'll be sorting off the new replacements and all the hope they bring. It's a wonderful life for those fortunate enough to live it.
Thank you for explaining, never too old to learn.I laughed so much seeing that difficult red cow performing. We all have to make choices, but it is a Business..Cape Town South Africa
You are too kind! I don't give my cows a 2nd chance unless they lose a calf that I might have been able to save if I had been there at birthing time. Cows eat and cost too much to keep without them raising a calf and pregnant. You did a good job deciding to cull those. I enjoy seeing your videos. Keep it up!
I had a cow like that. Happened twice in a row. Good calves @ 2weeks old, doing fine that night, next morning dead. Was no third chance. Vet suspected selenium deficiency but it didn't happen with other cows. One of those who really knows why things.
Like your choices Tyler, especially Ms. Fence Breaker. All of them look really good, good luck on the prices. With limited acres tough choices have to be made each and every year to keep the herd manageable and genetically healthy. Thanks for a very good video.
Buddy Great video! I am in SF now and will be getting into cattle after moving to my new property in Upstate NY. You're so lucky to be here with the weather....
Appreciate you sharing your decision making process of what cows you choose to cull. Some choices are always easy, and others not so much! Bottom line is that it is a business, and sometimes tough decisions have to be made.
You are not an animal sanctuary - they need to earn their keep. Still I know it was tough to make your choices - except for the first cow that really was a problem child. It would not surprise me to learn that you have also removed the instigator of previous calls regarding loose cattle. Well done.
Those cows went on that trailer so easily. That was nice! I’m always amazed at how dirty they can get a trailer in such a short time. They even manage to get stuff on the ceiling!
Great video Tyler! All your Ladies are lookin good. Keeping good records helps at cull time. Hope you did well at the auction? Thank you for sharing :-) Stay safe and healthy :-))
We had this mixed breed holstein/common cow named Lady, as feisty as big red you had there. If she came into calf it was always oversized no matter what we did. We lost one or two....she was the only one, that ever survived a cull...until we had to sell up.
It costs a lot of money to feed and house them....they have to pay it back. You can’t feel bad about it; you treat them well, feed them well, and then sell off for a good price. One of those cows is potentially a thousand dollar bill setting in the ground.
Hey Farmer Tyler, great logic behind your choices. Got a steer I have to take to the auction because covid has overloaded local processors; just found out there is an 8 month backlog for processing a calf in my area & he is a yearling now. Really hate that decision but feeding this boys getting expensive.
Not allows easy choosing cull cows but as you said its a good way of getting poor genes out of your herd. As my uncle told me when its that time of the year you have to look at the business side only. Tyler thanks for taking us along and giving your reasons.
Excellent explanation for culling cattle from the herd, as a business/rancher those calves are money in the bank. Wish you could keep them all, just not reality. Will they do preg check at the auction? Hope Mrs. FTR/you end up with extra foldin' green bills for the ranch kiity. 😊👏👍
Just a city girl’s thought......would you ever think the buyers would watch your channel to see which cow they might pick? It’s probably a dumb question but you know me, I’m always full of dumb questions?😆! Merry Christmas to you & your family🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Thank you for sharing, covid took out my line of work and I figured I can create wealth by farming. Hoping its not just a dream, looking to leave taxlifornia to buy some land and farm. I'm new to the subject but was looking at poultry, sheep and some cattle . Any suggestions on where to get land for a good price for a small scale farm to bring in enough income for two?
Couple of questions: 1. have you ever considered rotational grazing? 2. how far from 1400# are you cows? Lessons learned? Anytime a cow comes up barren - down the road she goes - no second chances. When they are not making you money, they are costing you money and you ain't no 501c3! Glad to see you understand about fly resistance heritability. Keep up the good work.
Aww my 91 yr old Dad Played with his cows And had to take them to auction too My Dad is crippled and herded them on foot! Édit Yes I was there to help him
Every animal that is sold at auction is checked out by a veterinarian. The females Tyler is selling will be preg-checked beforehand and the auction house will announce that she is either ‘open’ or bred, and the vets best guess on how many months along.
Nicely done! I find myself making excuses for some of my cows also, glad I'm not alone. However the video inspired me to go ahead and cull the ones I need to cull. Enjoy your vids, where are you located and how many acres do you farm? Thanks
Aside from the culling you did in this video how do you protect the herd from inbreeding. I know you like certain bulls borrowed/rented from friends and neighbors but how do you prevent having a pasture full of albinos? BTW the Miss Psycho Cow comment gave me a good chuckle. I've had to deal with a few of those.
Curious what the cull cow market is in your area. I took some in a month ago and was not overly impressed by what I got for them. I culled a couple good cows because their calves were nut jobs or never performed as well as the other calves and 2 late calvers.
where sadie been the real star of Farmer Tyler Ranch mini series ??????? sorry for your lost just read the little story about her love watching you work and training her
I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to choose ,the red cow gave you a dirty look when you called her psychopath haha There so fat and having a job going through there into the trailer x
