Golden words of wisdom for our everyday life to be happy wherever we are. He also nailed it saying the US is the best place to work and India is the best place to retire. Ignore the irritants that come along our way.
We too came back to India after spending 25 years in Africa. Our 2 Sons are in USA and Canada. My personal experience in making the move back to India is "no regrets ".I can only agree totally with what is expressed here. 5:57
Thank you both for giving this open, frank interview. Your experiences and insights are immensely helpful. Saving 50% of the total income is a great public secret revealed.!!! We all know it but don't do it!!! Repeated hammering like this is helpful.
@@DesiReturnSo glad found your site! In same dilemma as much NRI retirees n these videos give insights n shared experiences. priceless ! best wishes, Syd, Australia
One question as long as both couples are alive, one can take care of the other. How do we handle if one is not alive? Even hospital would want a care taker to be present. How to manage in such situations ?

Another very insightful video. Kudos to you Avinash ! It is apparent that this is not your typical retired couple, they seem highly accomplished and i cannot imagine what their investment portfolio would be given their 50/50 mantra! Times unfortunately now are different compared to their time in the US. Easier to save 50% when you have 20k a month as opposed to 3k. Regardless, they hit the nail on the head about the dollar going a lot further in India and it makes FINANCIAL sense to stick on in the west AS LONG as you are able to save a fair amount regularly. But the decision to relocate is definitely not purely financial. At this age it makes so much more sense to be in a place where conveniences are in abundance. Very important to be as self sufficient as possible and build a community of like minded individuals especially if you know you may not have family to support you during these years. Would have loved to know more about Indore as that seems to be coming up as a preferable place to relocate to in retirement.
Thanks so much! Very well said.. Glad you enjoyed it and I am really grateful for this young couple to be able to share their journey which is very insightful for a lot of people.
@@gnanasekarthiyagarajan7680 Yes, you should also boast about how you exploit the poor people in India by employing them as cook, house maid and pay them peanuts because they don't have any other option. That is a great facility in India because 80 % of people are very poor and do any work for you if you throw them a piece of bread. Your diplomats when posted in place like NYC breaks the local law by paying their domestic help less than minimum wage and then get arrested, you guys have absolutely no shame. Stay happy in India by sucking the blood of poor people because it is much cheaper than water.
Currently, I am living in US for last 25 years. Both my parents & my in-laws are living in India. And my daughter is very small (yet to start her kinder garden). My parents & her parents live great distance apart (Kolkata & Mumbai). I still plan to work another 10 to 15 years and then move back. By that time my daughter will be in teens. Any advice on what should be my strategies to start preparing now? This channel is awesome by the way.
Thanks for the feedback!! Glad to know that you have a plan in mind. Moving when your daughter is in teens could be a bit tough for her to adjust (sooner the better- before middke school if possible). If you need 10-15 years, take more trips to India with your daughter so she is familiar with and excited about the move etc., good luck and please share content with others who might benefit from it.
I am Married for 25 years no kids we are South Indians I want to move back to India I do love America what hesitated us to retire in USA cost of living medical expenses extremely high even if we payed our mortgages still need to pay property taxes I don’t live mid west down south states I don’t feel safe of their ideology one of my friends parents moved mid west states he felt unsafe Best place to live is New England states of USA but their taxes are so high just of taxes early paying minimum of 10 thousand USA dollars I know why we need to pay taxes it helps USA government Just debating myself we both are health care field above 50 years now
I like their attitude towards living life. They are not sad like many typical Indian parents who keep crying about kids living in foreign and left parents in India. They can do that only because they live outside of India. The only thing that made me wonder is their discrimination about the nonvegetarian community staying with them. When they are saying accommodating every one in other countries...why are they not doing the same in their own country?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We just need to acknowledge Its their non profit organization and their way of running it, but I understand your point.
I live in the USA for past 35 years, my entire family is vegetarian. When he talked about accommodating everyone, he meant you should learn to work in a diversified community, so your life is easy and happy. I do that everyday in my work. My best friends are from a diversified group. That does not mean you compromise on your personal eating habits to accommodate a diversified group. We work hard for our food. Especially when you get older, your food becomes an integral part. Let’s say if he allows non- veg food, 50 % of vegetarians may be okay with it the remaining 50 % have to find another source for their food. Instead of asking why he. Can’t accommodate non-veg food in his group, you can ask for his idea to create another group where you can provide non-veg food. So both groups are happy. This is for elderly people to stay happy.
Great topic. I am 47 and started building my retirement home in Kerala, India. Seeing the place that you grew up makes big difference especially when you are old. By the way I live and work in Canada since last 18 years and planning to retire @55
Very nice interview. Sri Ramakrishnan and his wife spoke so well. The questions very relevant Awesome About getting social security from US in India - they are still US citizens and have bank account in India How about those who are not US citizens or even a green card holders or permanent US resident being on H1 say, , is it possible to get social security credited to account in India ?
Thanks a lot for the feedback. Yes one would qualify for SS benefits once they meet the 40 credits even if there are not US citizens or GC holders living in India. Please check our video about that on the channel
After several years in US, I am contemplating a return to Bangalore and your Non Profit group seems like a good option, and the nice thing is depending on your affordability and liking can choose popular areas within the city or outskirts. If there are any such groups in formation would like to explore.
Thanks for watching. If you have interest to learn more about the non profit group that Mr and Mrs. Ramakrishnan are running, please send a note to info @ desireturn .com so I can provide the contact details and you can have further conversation. Thanks
This discussion is an eye opener about our motherland to many who consider Western countries are better. I am seventy year old and planning to join a senior citizen home . Can you please arrange provide the contact information of Mr. Ramakrishnan's society as I require vegetarian home. Regards
Good interview. But i see lots of people go back with $ to India for the same reason this couples mentioned. I live in a metropolitan city in U.S.A. , It has a huge Indian population. Lots of people go back but sadly return to U.S.A. after few years and mainly due to red tape , infrastructure and to corruptions. To deal with making big purchase or sell like home etc. things moves very slowly and it will move faster if you know someone and brine . All the foods can be delivered here, home cooks or tiffin services provoded by housewives , temples on daily basis. If you want can get a Indian person to cook daily, clean hones, maintain your garden/ backyard . Doctors can get away with anything in India. Yes, its a great country my motherland, I am proud to be Indian. Where to retire is individual vdecision and one's own priorities. Good luck to this couple, wishing the best for them 🙏🏽♥️ Money talks everwhere.
I absolutely agree with you where to live in your old age is a very individual decision! Each person has his or her needs and likes. I for one will never go back to India to spend my last days when my children and grandchildren are here in the USA. Only advantage in going to India to spend your last few years of life is that you can have a lot of money there because of your dollars. No other advantages. I have lived and worked in USA for 52 years and this is home in every way for me. My kids are well settled and I would rather spend the rest of my life peacefully here. My opinion.
I like your decision perhaps your children take care so well and no need to look back your motherland I salute yr children for yr comfortable stay in US
Very good idea. 👌👏 Are we allowed to go and see how this trust runs? We are also senior citizens and OCI holders. We live in Hyderabad and maybe we can gather a few friends who join us in living together.
We don't need 25 mins of discussion for that. It's simple, power of purchasing disparity. The can live for one year peacefull ly with 1 month pension from US.
Agree to some extent. Its not only purely financial aspect, there is quality aspect, life after the move etc., without all those details, story would be incomplete. Thanks for watching
It's as easy as you'd say. Moving from one country to another takes a lot of thinking/ effort, it's a big decision, certainly having enough money makes it's a little easier. This forum is for that I believe..share one's experience, knowledge etc. for me it's good to know what others think/ their experiences..I'd do my own research too..with all of it helps me to make a better informed decision.
Yr idea of non-profit trust to create a sr citizens home sounds so good and fortunate to enroll like minded seniors Can y please send the project report to float one such in Chennai as we are big diliama to continue to live in US or go back to spend our retirement We r 72 and 77 Healthcare is a big nuisance in US as all other things are manageable as long as we r together life will be different when one bird is out leaving the other in lurches yr advise in such situation please
You get groceries deliveries / medicine delivered, haircuts done at home/ easy domestic help/ food delivery though some things aren't as predicated/ reliable/ you'll find genuine people.
Where in Bangalore do they reside in? What is the name/ location of their retirement home? Very interesting and informative. Please share the details. Thank you

Wonderful advice sir!!! Some parallels I can draw with my own journey. The Chandariya group is oshwal community (same community as me) aware of their work and charity for Kenya community and also India community. I too live in NJ now since past 11 years very close to Hamilton. Golden years!!! Wonderful advice.
Hello Desi return, my husband is in the supply chain and he's currently a director in a private organization, we are US citizens. He applied to several companies in India and Singapore but all were rejected, why is no one in India and Singapore willing to proceed further? Asking because want to understand the reason for so many rejections so if there's something we can change accordingly. Also, we search jobs in LinkedIn and there are not many supply chain executive/ director level jobs in India and Singapore, don't understand why because India should be having lots of Supply Chain job especially considering the population.
Thanks for reaching out. Especially for senior roles, its important to to network with hiring managers in desired companies and reach out on how one will add value. I would expect quite a feq supply chain jobs in India. If you have firther questions, please reach out to us at info @ desireturn.com or on insta desireturn.official. All the best!
Ex pay jobs are difficult to find for us citizens as the wages are expected to be high and paperwork to hire in India is frustrating. A manager in India may make $30k in India but an expat may cost the company $150k or more because of taxes, visas, trips , is taxes and lawyer fees etc. best to get a job in a foreign company first with a branch in India or Singapore and then try to transfer internally
Very interesting couple. My wife and I are in Canada and are thinking about moving to Bangalore to retire. Is there any space/apartment that we can obtain in this complex.
All is good except for the fact that having a restriction on residents' food habits. It is a personal choice and should never be a criteria for inclusion. Each for their own. Best wishes. Also, most importantly, when one spouse crosses over, how will you manage life? Eg. My dad has macular degeneration which has made him dependant on my mom. My mom got diagnosed with lung pressure and related heart issue lately and is having hard time managing. They are 84, 76. They are managing on their own. They don't depend on us for money. But cannot say life has been easy. You can live safely in India as long as you have health and spouse. After that, life is challenging until and unless you have a person living with you who you can trust. There is no one formula that fits all. Do what is good for your family and be satisfied. Best wishes to all!!
Yes every ones life and experiences are different and one formula does fit. Please note that it their own non profit senior living and thats their meal preference for the group and we need to respect that. In terms of life with out spouse, everyone has different opinion on which place is better. As long as they are clear and decide. Its good.
A couple of points that are a little confusing. I lived 30 years in usa and moved to India to retire. I am not an indian origin person but my wife is. Social security can only be given if you work more than 10 years in the USA. After that the worker is entitled to social security. Your wife is entitled to half of she is a US citizen or citizen of certain countries but not india, so it ends when you die. The pension plan is good but not a guarantee as a child can need support, or health issues can consume pension quickly so you need to be prepared to accept lifes changes including pensions. I do not have any household service and get my own milk. India is great but not because it's cheap. India is great because it's rich with intangible experience. As for taxes, you do pay more in India as there are few deductions in India. Your usa income is taxed in usa first, but because you can file jointly, the deduction is quite big. The tax is less so the same income is also taxed in India, but there is no joint deductions so you pay much more tax and can only deduct the small tax you pay in the USA, so your tax is much higher in India even though the rates are similar.
@@DesiReturn No. Social security is like a pension and is not linked to a savings account. It pays a fixed amount as long as the owner is alive, and 1/2 to the surviving eligible spouse should they select it. Some spouse who have worked over 10 years may have a higher payout so they can select their own social security. Note the spouse benefit is not cumulative, so you get 1/2 the spouse or your own, not both
I would like to join Mr. Ramakrishnan’s community if possible. I am 80 my wife 72. Our children are in the USA. We are in search of a suitable Senior Home. Presently we are in Chennai.

Thank you for this informational video and interview with this wonderful and happy senior couple. May I have more information on the senior residence where they are located?
Glad you liked the discussion. They live in Bangalore. Please reach out to us at info @ desireturn.com or on instagram at desireturn.official to provide more information about guests. Thanks
Can I get more information about Mr. Ramakrishnan’s retirement home in Bangalore. We are planning to return to India from the US too. Would appreciate if you share more details
Good one though they could have talked a lot more. I am much younger & I have been living in India for the last 3 years. His talk about tax is only half correct. He is right about setting off the tax paid but he fails to mention the higher taxes in India. The second I wish he had talked which community he was living in Blr
On point no. 1 I cannot overlook the fact he is a CA and would have done proper due diligence but I did an exercise with a CA on my global income being taxed in India, I found Indian threshold is very low for highest tax bracket of 35%+. Any one with Social Security in US will easily cross that limit. In US we probably get charged 15 to 20% . The limit as I know is Rs.10,00,000/-. I will be keen to get his views on how we can avoid the additional 15% you end up paying on the same income levels compared to US
I would like to know if you are taxed on your US income in USA or in India or both places? Do you have to pay taxes in India even if you have no source of income there?
Great series and very helpful! One question I would ask is about Medicare , since it is paid during our work life in US. How can it be claimed outside US?
In general, Medicare does not cover health care or supplies outside of the United States, including India. Medicare usually does not cover medical care you receive when traveling outside the U.S. and its territories.
@@bscsmscs1578 Thanks for your response! So we have to take health insurance in India to cover all expenses probably good idea to share those info during these sessions to plan for it . Thanks again!
I am.told Medicare reimburses for the medical expense in India Also u can cancel expensive Medicare if you are not going back and forth to US People in higher income brackets in US pay higher Medicare premiums - u can save so much in.India
@@DesiReturncan you please interview someone who are shuttling back and forth between US and India post retirement? After living in the US for 25 years and counting, I’m seriously considering spending 6 months in US and 6 months in India. There are many people in this segment. Would be beneficial to hear someone already doing this.
@@DesiReturnI came to ask this. It would be great to see a numbers break down with some hypothetical income. What happens if social security owner passes away and spouse (non working or has worked for 10 years in the US) survives. Do kids get any benefit? What about tax advantaged education plan like 529? HSA etc?
Namaste Can you please tell us which senior housing Mr. Ramakrishan lives in and how to become a resident in this complex. Whom to contact. We have 2 NRI seniors who are looking for a senior place to move to and would like to connect with Mr. Ramakrishnan. Thank you
Am not sure if coming back to India is a great thing-all your working years which is the ‘ contributing’ years you have contributed your say 4 decades to another nation and now come to take benefit India’ s resources which you were not part of it. Leave it for Indians who stayed here and built it. When India was bereft of you professionals who left, that’s fine but stay there only. You will be able to easily purchase anything here, that is the senior living- raising cost for everything here. Where is your responsibility? Fine you went but stay there. This kind of migration has made India lose so many resources
When you are only the one as host and your guests are 2 you should shrink your screen and extend your guest screen, look at how inconvenient you made them to fit in a small frame.
I am greatful that guests were able to get on the call and share their experiences with some technical challenges. Their video was not great but message is more important. We have couples on the show and I beleive videos was fine with them. Anyway thanks for the feedback and we will keep it in mind. Thanks
It's better to take the health insurance before returning to India (2-3 years before) so all the pre-existing conditions are covered etc., but have high deductible to minimize the costs. Please reach out to us for any specific questions at info @ desireturn .com
Mr. Ramakrishnan Sir - Is your group open to new comers?. If i heard right you started off as a small group and it has grown to a bigger membership. Do you have open / free land to expand with new construction? What area of Bangalore is your association situated. Thanks!!

As you rightly pointed, it depends on on your lifestyle, travel etc., assuming you have own house, no kids education you can easily live with 50k- 2 lkh per month ra based on location and lifestyle
Social security deposits. The deposit need not be in US or US based bank. You can choose to be deposited in NRO account in a local bank - State Bank of India, HDFC or ICICI … it has be A rupee account simply because you lost Non Resident status… or can be deposited in NRE
Are you kidding me... Retiring in India ? I just visited Kashmir. Forget the dirt and grime, the noise alone was enough to turn me off, not to speak of the traffic. It will take India time to develop a civic sense....not in my lifetime.
I would also like to connect with Mr. & Mrs. Ramkrishna Lin. What a positive attitude! I wonder where their children are living, most of the desi here are stuck because their grown up children are here. The question is how much can you count on having children close by?
I concur with what the respected couple say. In west, you live a servant less life. Your organs are taxed more even after crossing 60/70/80/90 years. Medical help and diagnosis is very slow. They call it self sufficiency, but in a way it’s disgrace. No mercy. Indian life is a luxury life that you won’t get anywhere in the world. One needs God’s real blessings to have such an opportunity. Stay blessed dear uncle and auntie.
Honestly...yes they are nice couple. But they are milking the US social security system. They have just contributed to it for 15 years and going to milk it for 40+ years. It is unfair, when current system is on the verge of bankruptcy. I think changes should be made to adjust to cost of living based on the country you claim to be resident. This is unfair!
One would get benefits based what's contributed and for how long. One can check their SS benefits on the SSA website. It's not like one contributing for 10 years and another person contributing for 25 years get the same pension.
@@DesiReturn Again my point is about them not a resident of US but claiming living allowance (aka SS benefit) at resident rates. It should be based on cost of living of the resident country. It is unfair otherwise. Again this is not a pension fund, this is tax collected on the (young) current contributing members income. It is unfair to them also. I would even go as far as disqualifying SS benefits if you are not a resident of US. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
@@shosansah4629If SS benefit is based on cost of living location, then someone residing in California should get 5x the SS compared to say someone in Nebraska. SS benefits are proportional to what you contributed. It's upto you how to make it work better for you. No one is stopping a US citizen from retiring in a low-cost-of-living country. In fact there are many examples of folks who retire in Mexico.
I think the main reason to return to India was they themselves. They left india for themselves n returned for themselves. Their parents would b independent already. They left them back for more than 30 years. Y lying simply.
WhT is there to lie here. They left wen they were young to earn and parents were young too. Once they retired they decided to return for parents n themselves.
This doesn’t make much sense. My parents in India are healthy and young right now so I have been living in the USA for past 15 years. I plan to return when they are approaching 70s, my parents are onboard this plan, looking forward to family time with grandkids living together in one home.
He is making a big mistake. Healthcare in US is better than India. Money is not everything but lifestyle USA is better. I ma 70 yr old living in USA and can not leave my kids in USA and live myself in India. It is not practical.
Everyone's perceptive is different. Healthcare is more accessible and doctors can come home in India vs US. Happy to know that you like it in US, which is great.
NO. I SEE 80-90 YEAR OLD PEOPLE WHO DRIVE EVERYWHERE BY THEMSELVES AND LIVE BY THEMSELVES. MOST OF THEM EVEN WORK IN STORES. IT TAKE 2-4 MONTHS FOR PRIMARY CARE VISIT ALSO.
