Roberto Prosseda's master class with Gigliola Di Grazia on Chopin's Nocturne op. 55 No. 2. Filmed at Villa Sandra Piano Academy, Lesa, Italy, March 22, 2016. Directed by Pietro Tagliaferri
Finally someone who understood this work profoundly enough. What satisfaction. Obviously exceptionally knowledgeable piano teacher regarding Chopin's more special interpretive sensibility, always to be considered, tonally and rhythmically.
Ormai bisogna rassegnarsi, temo.
Honestly, from a strictly musical perspective: Gigliola just doesn't fit the emotional description of this nocturne. Now, there is nothing wrong with that. This often happens in the musical universe. The problem is that in the classical universe people often don't recognize this 'shortcoming' and try to overcome it with 'technicality'. That doesn't do it for me. I tell you what: after the first notes I started to dissect her emotional presence or involvement in the tune. All along she just confirmed my suspicion. Again: technical superiority doesn't do it for me. It's the ability to connect with Chopin while telling the story. If you're really interested in a manifestation of THE FEEL OF THIS TUNE: CHECK OUT CLAIRE HUANGCI. Do that and then - after listening to her LIVE - let me know if you can 'second' the observations here above.....Thank you!!
Erano sufficienti i sottotitoli in inglese.
Thank you so much for doing this in English! I have learnt a lot from the instructions re the middle part - especially how you want the three similar middle “comments” to be expressed differently so that the entire upper voice would be one and also more interesting at the same time! If you have done it in Italian with subtitles, I would not have understood your emotions and intellectual points in your message so well. Thank you again !!
Master classes are ridiculous. The girl plays even better than him. If you already knows all the notes, you sould not be compelled to play in the style of anyone else as if his " style" is the "right way" of playing. Just use your own touch and feelings.
