PUPILS OF LISZT. George Liebling, the brother of another Liszt pupil Saul Liebling, was born in Berlin in 1865 three years after the birth of Moriz Rosenthal. Both died in 1946 and both studied with Liszt but not during the same period. That is where the comparison ends, Whereas, Rosenthal maintained his technique over the years, Liebling devoted most of his time composing a vast number of compositions including operas, concertos and sonatas for piano a great mass and many songs. By 1920 when these recordings were made, his technique had so deteriorated that he was no longer able to negotiate the difficulties of Liszt's "La Campanella." In September of 1929, Liebling opened a studio at the St. Francis Apartment Hotel in Hollywood. He and his wife Alice, evidently enjoyed successful careers in Los Angeles, he as a pianist, composer and teacher and she as a novelist and playwright. Alice Liebling died in Hollywood in1934 at the age of 64. . An article published January 1942 in the Los Angeles Times regarding his studio reads," Dr. George Liebling, pianist, composer and teacher, studied with Franz Liszt and also with Rubinstein, Leschetizky and Kullak. His pupils come from many States. Students are often presented in recitals to accustom them to audiences." I can not locate any further information about Liebling after this date.
