One of the very best interpreters of Chopin’s works, don’t forget that he was a pupil of Mikuli and Liszt.

What do you think of Gould's recording of this piece? It is quite controversial, since he doesn't play it really "stylistically correctly". But I still like it very much. It's a very precise and robust, yet incredibly musical and intimate rendition.

Absolutely stunning. The color and dynamic control is unbelievable, love the voicing in various not-that-obvious places eg. The trio, gives the music so much depth. Thank you!

it would PASS the grade in competitions or even music academia from where the competition committees are gathered ..to extol their "famous winners"...BUT that s exactly an explanation of the brilliance and "correctness" today PALES in musical Character compared to the "old school" ...with its greater CONTRASTS and LARGE lyrical lines...coupled with the FINEST subtleties that show all the PAIN , tears...struggle...majestic...terror...calm and soaring style of the romantic era.

Interpretação diferente... Gostei. Pena que a qualidade do som não é muito boa, porém a interpretação é ótima!!!

É uma gravação de 1939... Rosenthal nasceu em 1864! Foi discípulo de alunos de Chopin e foi discípulo do próprio Liszt!

I'm a big fan of Rosenthal, however...this interpretation seems a little sloppy. Maybe it's due to him being 77 years of age. The fact he could play this is already impressive enough

the CONCEPT ot what "TONE" IS is vastly different from today s norm...there is musically and conceptually a FRESHNESS ...like they were just DISCOVERING or hearing for the first time the composition...while playing with virtuouso hands..honed through a lifetime ....IT HAS A COUNTERPART in VOCAL art..opera singers today PALE in comparison with the LUSCIOUS "dark" sounds of the generations up to the Mid 1960.s when the greatest like Tebaldi were in the latter part of their legendary careers...INSTRUMENTAL soloists are the same......they in fact HAD better technique...it is a MISCONCEPTION that just because of enormour spread of playing in the world...that "VIRTUOSOS" today are "progressed" technically or ""more intelligent" as MUSICIANS or artists...that is not tuure...ROSENTHAL almost plays as "quirky" in articulation as a ...say..Glenn Gould...yet the concept is somewhere MORE "CHOPINUESQE " than the ""proper stylists" today...

Is this interpretation considered good just because he was a student of Liszt? Objectively Rosenthal's performance is a terrible! After listening to this performance and then hearing Rubinstein's interpretation, you can understand why he is considered a master.

Most of the recordings of the early 20th century masters are from their later stages of life. Back then, with a worse standard of living it's still very impressive.

yes, all they have is technique, unfortunately. all technique. no poetry.

Rosenthal is very old here but, the technique of today's pianists is not better, they have simplified the technique. Can they play with real legato, with less pedaling, as Chopin wanted? If you do not play with real legato and instead rely on the full pedal, you will play more easily, but you will not have the polyphony, song and clarity that Chopin wanted. It is very difficult to create a controlled rubato with the singing tone Chopin wanted. I should also add that modern pianists play in a very narrow dynamic range and their ability to produce tones is very poor, because their piano techniques only serve to press the keys correctly. They play everything easier now because the technique has been simplified and there is a lack of detail, color and lifelessness. The vast majority of today's pianists cannot play the way Chopin wanted. Chopin was against many elements of modern technique. In the past, all techniques served the music, not the comfort of the pianists. If today's pianists played according to Chopin's wishes, they would be devastated. Today's pianos are not flexible in terms of sound production, they give ready-made tones and dynamics. This is not an improvement, but a convenience, because such pianos existed in Chopin's time, and Chopin was strongly against it because he believed that the pianist had to find his own timbre and produce various effects. Currently, pianists sacrifice music, color, melody, rhythm and polyphony in order to play more accurately.

Ужасная, колченогая, вернее, колчерукая игра. Множество ошибок, без аромата, фантазии, фразы рубит топором, квартовые пассажи не выходят совсем.. Короче ... в архив, для ознокомления,как не надо делать Шопена
